  1. I would bid 2♦. I dont like pass. I dont have a penalty pass but I do have a normal hand with support. I am not nearly strong enough to X.
  2. I have just bought the danish translation of this book. Its great! Quite different from other books ive read. Explaining concepts rather than losing itself into details.
  3. There was UI. Partner tanked over 2♠ before passing. Is 3♥ still clearcut or is pass now a logical alternative ?
  4. [hv=d=s&v=n&s=s53h10653d632ca875]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Local club MP, we are vul vs not. pass - 1♠ - 2♥ - pass pass - 2♠ - pass - pass 3♥ The defensive bidding system is limited (yes we are beginners :-) Any new suit as response to an overcall is a good 5-card suit and is inviting to game. Bidding opponents suit is gameforcing without another good bid. (With a passed hand undiscussed). Given the options, how do you rate the second round pass by south? The 3♥ bid?
  5. Basic cardplay, basic cardplay and basic cardplay and then some simple sound bidding. Forget about squezzes and endplays
  6. I have attended many free teaching sessions in BIL and I have learned that each teacher teaches his/her own bidding system. There is not one standard system, but SAYC/BBO basic is often used When I first started in BIL I had never played a 5 card major system and knew only ACOL principles. At first it was quite confusing when different teachers had different advice/rule for the same situation, but I have learned to appreciate the differences. Experts differ! Systems differ. Individuals differ! As for 1♠ - 2♥ I always expect 5, but I dont know that this sequence is mentioned in SAYC/BBO basic. BIL free session are GREAT! Thank you teachers!
  7. Fred has made some very nice interactive beginner lessons explaining attitude (and a lot more). In BBO choose 'Explore bridge' then 'learn to play bridge' then on the right side 'Defense - signaling on defense'
  8. Thanks, I see I have described my hand and its up to partner now since partner could have a wide range for a overcall. I still do not understand the logic of the bidding sequence. Openers 2♠ showed a small(normal) opener and was clearly not forcing. Now she bids 4♠. This looks very much like a sacrifice. Why should we ever let them play 4♠ undoubled at pairs? What am I missing?
  9. Yes I would have bid 4♦ if it was either splinter or cuebid, but none of these were agreed so not available.
  10. [hv=d=s&v=n&s=sj8532haq2dcaq1063]133|100|Scoring: MP pass- 1♥ - pass- 1♠ 2♦ - 2♠ - pass - ? (1♥ could be 4 acol style)[/hv] Local pairs. We bid 4 card suits up the line so 1♥ can be 4. 2♠ can be 3 or 4 spades but partner does not like to bid 2♠ without 4. 3♣ now would be help suit game try. Is slam likely? How do I find out?
  11. 1♣ - 1♥ - 1♠ - 2♥ 2♠ - 4♥ - pass - pass 4♠ - pass - pass - ? Local pairs, all nonvul. LHO opens and partner bids 1♥. My 2♥ shows a small hand. We do not have many agreements for these competetive auctions. I took my partners pass over 4♠ as forcing since we have bid a voluntary game and opener seems to have bid 4♠ as a sac. Thus we cannot let them play an undoubled 4♠. We do not have any agreements about forcing passes 1) is my thinking about partners pass over 4♠ correct? 2) what features in my hand do I look for when deciding whether to x or bid 5♥ (or pass)?
  12. [hv=d=e&v=n&s=sj10965432h2dq82c9]133|100|Scoring: MP 1♥ - your bid[/hv] Local pairs, vul vs not. RHO opens 1♥. What do you bid and why?
  13. Thank you Ben and Justin. Nice plan. I was looking for the endplay but just didnt see the importance of club 8! North had ♦A and ♣K9xx so your plan would work, but I only got 9 tricks. The game is from my local club last night. After the game partner asked if it was alright to put me in 4 spades and I said no, no, no :( Then I get home and see the scores online. In a field of 17 tables 2x420, 7x170, 3x140, 3x-50, 1xpassout and 1xavg :o
  14. [hv=d=e&v=n&w=sqj102ha52d752ca82&e=sk98753hk10dk10cj104]266|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Pairs. I opened a weak 2 spades 1st hand as east. Opps silent and now I must play 4 spades. South leads spade Ace and North follows. South continues with a spade. How do I plan the play?
  15. True. Playing SAYC on BBO is frustating. I made an effort to learn this system http://web2.acbl.org/documentlibrary/play/...gle%20pages.pdf thinking that the ACBL version was *the* SAYC system. It seems like anyone on BBO just puts SAYC on their profile but have no idea or is playing some version. So many out there have made up systems and called them SAYC. If you do not play SAYC dont put SAYC in your profile.
  16. News to me. Is 3D p 4H also a splinter? I have never heard of this, and see no reason why we cannot place the contract opposite a preempt. It is true we do not preempt OVER a preempt (when the opponents preempt) but when partner preempts we are well placed to jump to what we feel is the right contract and apply the maximum pressure on the opponents. My feelings too. When partner preempts you can set the contract. My partner didnt agree. I bid 5♣ and the bidding went: 3♦ - pass - 5♣ - X 5♦ - pass - pass - X all pass. 5♦ X was -800. 5♣ X would have been -500. They had 650 on but not more on a ♦ lead. Partner didnt belive i had clubs so i tabled a zero trick 9 card suit :-(
  17. [hv=v=b&s=sxhxxdxckqj987432]133|100|Scoring: MP partner dealt and opened 3♦[/hv] From last night in my local club. About 15 tables play the same hand. Partner is a solid preempter. He will have at least 7 good ♦'s. What would you bid? EDIT: partner could open 3NT with AKQxxxx in ♦'s and no side K or A
  18. I guess 4♦ is a cue. But can the limited hand make a slam try in this auction? I guess he is strong, 4 hearts and many controls. Something like Ax Axxx AQxx Qxx BUT then why didnt he superaccept? I would not bid 3NT but 4♥. Playing Texas isnt 2♦ followed by 4♥ a mild slam try?
  19. Sceptic, were you playing variable preempts Luis Lrargerich style? This is a 6-7 according to Luis. So was this a 6-7 with your partner? 1st hand vul vs vul is also a 6-7 . I think I would not open 3♠ 1st hand with this.
  20. I guess with my live partner the bidding would go 1♥ - 1♠ 3♦ - 3♠ 4♠ - pass As for 6♠: I need ♣K onside and I need the ♣K to fallout. Say I run 4 rounds of spades, then im downto ♣K second ondside, not good. So I need to ruff a club. (Assume LHO leads A of D and then A of H) Ruff, ♣Q, small ♣ to Ace, ♦ to ruff, ♣ to ruff. If the ♣K is still out there I cash one spade and try to run my 3 red winners and then ruff a red suit back with the 9. That suit will have to be 4-4 or ♠10. If the ♣K has fallen out: cash one spade and ruff a ♥ back and run trumps. Must be 3-2 or the 10 fall out. Thats as far my analysis would ever go at the table :-)
  21. I double. Without the pause I would double. I will not let the pause get me off my natural bid. Afterall he could have been thinking of whether or not to further preempt?
  22. I am looking for deals to go over with my live partner. The topic should be: "Listen to the bidding and decide whether to lead active or passive". The difficulty should be *beginner* level, ie rather clear cut cases, basic stuff. Does anyone know websites with such stuff, or CD's or books? (English, German, Danish or Swedish) TIA
  23. [hv=s=sakqxxhdakckj8xxx]133|100|[/hv] The full story: Indy, imps, last round. I talked myself into not opening 2♣ because: 1) I dislike 2♣ in indy's. Especially two suiters. The auction often gets uncertain. Is 2♦ waiting? Is 2♥ double negative or postive? Etc. 2) I didnt fear roundpass with this distribution 3) I was hoping the actual sequence showed a real reverse and was forcing 3♠ was passed out and made 11. The horrible auction made 7.4 Imps over the field :-)) Both black suits broke badly and many slams and grands, doubled and redoubled went down.
  24. What does this sequence show and why in SAYC (or 2/1): 1♣ - pass - 1NT - 2♥ 2♠ - 3♥ - pass - pass 3♠
