This one? http://eastontario.com/conventions/count2.htm

Sorry, I got it upside down. I agree your x. I dont agree 2♣. I think that denies 4 spades. So, I agree your3♣. The problem then is what to do over 3♦? You know p has at most 3 spades and short ♥'s. Opps found a heart fit but chose ♦'s so maybe partner has 2 ♥'s afterall. At the table I might pass or bid 4♣. I dont like the double but then again I dont play many advanced doubles and this one would be penalty to me - a strong suggestion to partner NOT to compete any further. At MP's you can double their partscores more freely but at imps?

Hi, Opinions from an intermediate: A) Playing with my reg p 2♥ is gameforce. 2♠ is fourth suit forcing, showing slam interest. 3♣ just describing the hand further. :) Did north rebid kjxx of clubs after partner made a negative double? That does not make sense. Support spades. C) 3♣ alone red in second hand, imps should show at least 7½ tricks D) Yes, without any agreements I would take 3♣ as stayman.

beginner's play hand
plaur replied to hatchett's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Plan A: ♦K, J, Q then ♥A and a small ♥ to Q, if ♦'s not 3-3. Ill win if ♦ are 3-3, if ♥K is onside or single behind. Maybe im missing something with ♥'s? Hmm. Can I also win if ♥K is offside but ♥J10 is onside, by taking finesses with ♥987? But might lose with ♥K onside and J10 offside - not sure what to do. At the table I go with plan A :-) Edit: Arclight has a point with ♦J and small ♦ to Q. LHO might hold back the A from Ax or go high second time from Axx -
At the table I bid 2NT which was passed around. The field played 3NT and 9 tricks was even, with a few getting 10. Since this was the strongest field I've played to date, it made me think about the 2NT bid. Do the 2NT bidders think partner should have raised to 3 with xx xx Kxxx K10xxx (To Frances: system is beginner acol, 4 card suits up the line, may bypass weak 4 card minor in favor of strong major 4 card suit, 15-17 NT. My partner will usually bid a weak 4 card major over x)

[hv=d=e&v=n&s=sq843hakda10caj963]133|100|Scoring: MP 1♣ - X - 2♣ - p ?[/hv] I've been thinking about this hand for a week now and still cant decide what the right bid is. Pairs, 22 tables. I open 1♣ - showing 4+ clubs. 2♣ is 6-9 and 4+clubs. Can be weaker/distributional since over the x partner often wants to preempt a little with a fit. How does one evaluate a hand like this? How much is my hand worth now? 3NT? 2NT? other bid? Does MP scoring change decision?

I wanted to show my clubsuit. Thinking that if we just let them bid and play they were favorites to make a good score. Partner took my x as general takeout, a hand that want to compete. I passed 2♠ hoping that 100 out would be ok. I would have been but 150 was a disaster. http://www.bridge.dk/4278/Klub1/Turneringe...s_S227_CG1.html , hand 17. Comments?

pass - 1♦ - 1NT - pass 2♣ - X 1NT is 15-17ish, 2♣ stayman. What does the X from opener show?

None has mentioned it, but isnt the south hand very close to upgrading to a 20-21 2NT opener ?

Straight forward play

First impression: ruff a ♠, drop ♦J on ♥AK. Back to hand with ♦A and ruff last spade. Ruff a ♦ back and run ♣ AQ9. If ♣J is 3rd or 4th I get 12 tricks. The danger sems to be in the last ♦ruff to get back to hand. Ruf low or with the 8? Perhaps another plan is safer? -
bidding here and how do you make
plaur replied to sceptic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Good hand. I would have bid the same way up to the last 4♠. I would have a hard time evaluating the south hand. On a 4-3 fit I am ruffing ♥ in the wrong hand and it looks like the doubler could have 4 spades. 3♦ invitational seems right. I will print out the hand and bid it with my reg partner. Question: If south does bid 3♦ and it goes pass to North, what is her bid? How does one evaluate the North hand then? -
Whats your auction W-E
plaur replied to jocdelevat's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If you are playing SAYC then responder promises to bid again, so both 2NT or 3♦ are forcing! And I would have a hard time chosing between the two :-) 3NT shows a stronger hand. -
How do you feel about supporting partner with a three card suit? 1♣ - 1♠ 2♠ - 3♦ where 2♠ can be 3 spades with ruffing values, ie single or double in ♦ or ♥. If you can support with 3 then it is my understanding that 3♦ (gametry) promises 5 spades and that 2NT would be a gametry with 4 spades? Also as an answer to 2♠ a jump to 4♠ is a little dangerous with a 4 card suit. You could bid 3NT and partner could correct to 4♠ with a four card suit. Do you agree? (Playing 4 card majors you have 1♥ - 2♥ and we are still not sure of an 8 card fit)

If you start with the ♦Q you can pickup diamonds 5-0. If both follow then play ♦A, but now you cannot get back to hearts if you cash AK and the queen falls, so I think im with Greg's plan.

[hv=d=s&n=sk2hj105dak1073ca64&s=sqjhak643dq96c1095]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Local teams. You have the flu, and probably should have called in a substitute but here you are declaring 3NT! Lead is a small spade to the Ace and a spade back. Plan the play.

Many beginner / intermediates write SAYC without actually knowing SAYC. SAYC FULL means that you know sayc. You can then add deviations and add ons to your profile.

[hv=s=sxhaqj10dj8xxxcaqx]133|100|1♣-1♠-X-p 1NT-2♠-3♦ all pass[/hv] 1 ♣ is 3+ clubs 1NT is 12-14 We do not play negative freebids Whether 2♦ by opener would be reverse has not been discussed Do you agree the X? Why or why not? Why is 3♦ forcing or not?

Having agreed SAYC I would say quant all 3

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=skq432hq83dk2ca105]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1♠ - 2NT - 3♠ - 4♣ 4♠ - 5♣ - p - p X[/hv] 1♠ acol, may be 4 2NT explained as "both minors" 3♠ limit, but really no agreements over 2NT Intermediate players all around. First game of 32 board match. First game after christmas so we are all a bit rusty :-) I lead ♣ 5. My thoughts were: We have the majority of HCP's. They have distributional hands. It is probably a matter of how much we set them. I want to limit their ruffing so plan is to get back on the lead and lead ♣ A and another ♣ (depending on dummy). Please critize lead Edit: 2NT both minors, sorry

Responding to negative double
plaur replied to plaur's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Live I play acol 4 card suits up-the-line in principle with 15-17 NT. "In principle" means that opener may ignore a weaker 4 card minor in favor of a good 4 card major: AK10x Kx Kxxx Jxx I would open 1♠ and rebid 2NT over 2♣ or 2♥. If the hand was stronger I would open the minor. 1♠ does not promise 5 so you get sequences like this: 1♠ - 2♣ 2NT - 3♠ * GF with 3 card support -
[hv=d=e&v=e&s=sa98732hjdak4ca95]133|100|Scoring: XIMP pass - 1♠ - 3♥ - X pass - ?[/hv] What do you bid and why, with SAYC agreed (assuming x is negative)? What would you bid and why, playing ACOL, when 1♠ might be a four card suit? lin : http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/fetch...php?id=36460320 My partner won a very nicely played 5♣ :-) Peter Laursen

plaur replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I dont like the strong jump shift by South. I dont think the hand is strong enough. North should cuebid ♣ control with 4♥. If south now has enough to go 4NT uhh... not sure. You have control in all suits but do you have the tricks? If you dont go for 4NT (over 4♥) partner cant move since he dont know about the ♥ control. -
3♣ and hope they compete with 3♠. Partner is likely 2-2 in spades and diamonds with about 10 hcp and the only reason he doubles is because its MP's and they have a fit and stopped at the 2-level

When I bid 3♥ I hinted at the opps to call the TD which they agreed. TD noted the UI and asked us to play it out. When I tabled my hand opps clearly said that my 3♥ bid was not appropiate. They are better and more experienced than me. TD was called after we played 3♥ down one for a good result. I didnt even await TD's ruling but agreed with opps that the result should be overruled and it was. No problem with me. I just asked here to know if my 3♥ bid was very unappropiate. I dont like these UI situations. There are unspoken accusations of 'angleshooting' (or worse) hanging in the air and its just a local club game where we want to have fun and get along with everyone. Who am I to evaluate when pass is LA? But then again I dont want to miss an obvious bid when I think is obvious ...
