  2. Above analysis was mine too. I went passive with ♥7 Partner had ♠QJxxx and ♥A. Declarer ♠A9xx. After ♥A was knocked out he had 12, on ♠ lead 10 tricks
  3. Usually at least 45/54 minors, slammish if partner has the right values. Additional question: what does west need in spades to double 3♠ splinter for the lead?

Opponents experienced internationals. 1♠ alerted as unbalanced (4 spades and 5+ clubs) 3♥ gameforce 3NT bid like a shot long pause before pass over 4NT. I did not have a clue how to pick a lead here. Thoughts?
  6. I was declarer and was taken by surprise by the quick action. Playing with good friends in a club game I'd thought it better to call TD, when I had already uttered surprise. I had full count of distribution and was pretty sure RHO had the king, but(!) it was not a 100% thing, so I was getting ready to play through the hand in my head to make sure.
  7. [hv=pc=n&s=shdca8&w=shdc97&n=shdct4&e=shdqck]399|300[/hv] South is declarer in a spade contract. West is on lead. West leads the 7 of clubs. Before declarer calls for a card to be played, dummy plays the 4 and east the king. Now declarer says 'I did not call for a card yet'. Director is called. What is the ruling? How many tricks does declarer get? What are the relevant laws?
  8. [hv=pc=n&w=sj94ht5dkq53cqt76&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=ppp1dp1hp3hp4hppp]133|200[/hv] I've been through Opening Leads by Lawrence several times and it still does not click. Matchpoints. What is your analysis and thought process here before you pick a suit to lead?
  9. Playing modern standard negative doubles this sequence happens frequently: 1x (2y) pass pass and its openers turn again. Beginner/intermediate articles explains and gives many example hands where opener doubles with shortness in the overcalled suit and passes with length/strength in the overcalled suit. However I cant find much material on what bid to choose when opener has more distribution/strength. When do you: Rebid own suit Bid a new suit Double and plan to take another bid after partners non-pass Does any know of articles this discuss this in depth?
  10. I really like being able to pass and offer to play 1NTx. Lots of opponents double our 12-14 NT with too weak hands and then 1NT (X) pass puts lots of pressure on 4th hand. The following works really well in an environment where opponents double 1 NT freely. If your opponents always has a BIG NT when doubling you may need better... pass: to play! may be flat weakish or any hand that wants to gamble. Sometimes a big winner, only rarely -500 xx: ask opener to bid 2 clubs, responder will pass or bid his 5 or 6 card suit, to play 2 clubs: SOS! Opener will bid diamonds with 5+, 2 hearts with both majors. Opener may pass 2 clubs, awaiting penalty double 2 diamonds: Both majors. May be weak, invitational or strong 2 major: Invitational. Opener may pass or raise with a fit. This is a simple and easy to remember method. Only caveat is to remember what 2 Diamonds means! Responder: both majors, Opener: 5+ to play
  11. [hv=pc=n&w=st975h754d7642c83&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=1sp]133|200|swiss teams all vul[/hv] What do you bid here and why? Will you bid different if you play 4 card majors and 2NT as 10+ with sup?
  12. Thank you! I need the threat of ruffing a heart good(missed that) and keep the diamond entry for that. Because of the heart ruffing threat West must keep two hearts and thus discard a minor suit card. Then, when I ruff a diamond, I will know who guards diamonds (or diamonds are good) and then in the end I will know the club position.

[hv=pc=n&s=skqjt742h2da3ckj5&n=sa96hqj3dkt65ca42&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1s2h2np6sppp]266|200|Lead King of hearts, east follows suit[/hv] Reading an old article(Dansk Bridge, juli 1984) about Oswald Jacoby. It reads: "West led ♥K and when East followed Ozzie claimed on a double squeeze against any distribution. Only six seconds had passed since the lead! Try it yourself." I cant see it. What am I missing? One failed try: Assume West has ♥A and leads a spade on trick two. I draw trumps, ♦A, ♦K, ruff ♦, run spades. In the four card position I play the last spade. West keeps ♥A so I discard the ♥Q from dummy. Cross to dummy with a low club and leads a club from dummy. Both opponents have followed suit in both minors. West is 1633 or 1642 but I still dont know where the minor Queens are, so dont know whether to drop or finesse clubs. [hv=pc=n&s=s2hdckj5&w=shad3c6&n=shqdtca4&e=shd2c32]399|300|Four card postion with South on lead. ♣Q and ♦Q both still out, but not known who has which[/hv]
  14. What is the best line in 4 hearts on a ♦K lead? [hv=pc=n&w=skt965ht5d7cak865&e=s7haqj762da95cj42&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=1sp2hp2sp3hp4hppp]266|200|Lead diamond King[/hv] This is how Weichsel won it. What a pretty ending! Looking at GIB it was a Woolsey misdefense. Using GIB again Weichsel had an even better line, but maybe thats all just double dummy ?
  15. Does anyone have some good bidding table scripts to practice overcalls and responding to overcalls for beginners? I want to sit two players and two gibs at a bidding table. Have the gib open and the players overcall and respond, at first always with a fit. Practicing simple beginner sequences for example: (1m) 1M (pass) 2m (1m) 1M (pass) 2M (1m) 1M (pass) 3M and also 1M openings with overcall and respond with a fit. Later I want to expand into hands without fit and hands with more competetive bidding. My first attempt: (( hcp(west)>=11 and clubs(west)>=5 and spades(west)<=4 and hearts(west)<=4 ) or ( hcp(west)>=11 and diamonds(west)>=5 and spades(west)<=4 and hearts(west)<=4 ) or ( hcp(west)>=12 and hcp(west)<=14 and spades(west)<=4 and hearts(west)<=4 ) or ( hcp(west)>=18 and hcp(west)<=19 and spades(west)<=4 and hearts(west)<=4 ) ) and (( hcp(north)>=9 and spades(north)>=5 ) or ( hcp(north)>=9 and hearts(north)>=5 ) or ( hcp(north)>=11 and clubs(north)>=6) or ( hcp(north)>=11 and diamonds(north)>=6)) and ( hcp(east)<=5)
