How high do you pre-empt?
P_Marlowe replied to AL78's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi, 2H or 3H, mixing it up is usually a good idea. There are hands, when 2H works better, if the points are more evenly distributed, and they make an overcall / inv. raise and stop, and there are hands, where taken away the space works better, ..., when 4S goes down, and than there are hands, where it does not matter, as it should be here. With kind regards Marlowe -
Difficult competitive situation

Pass. At IMPs ob., at MP you could bid 4C, ..., you have a 9 card fit, partner will have no wastage in spades, I am not to afraid of defending 4S. -
What should this double jump mean?
P_Marlowe replied to AL78's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I / It may be biased by seeing both hands, but I think you are worth another go. Most likely 4S, it starts to get complicated in new partnership. But missing 24HCP slams is not the end of the world. -

I grid my teeth, and try to keep my cool. Undiscussed it tells you, partner has no idea. You will find lots of peoble, that will play this as 3P preempt. What it should be: Splinter / Fit Jump, Request to bid 3NT. Take your pick. For us, it would be a Fit Jump. Never comes up, which is ok. -
X My rule of thump, act similar, as if the opening happened on the 1 level. What would I do? X. Sure I preferred a 3rd heart, but I have add. HCP, some compensation, we will find out, if enough.

My impression was, that opener that the style tries to clarify his shape type (bal. / unbal) with his 2nd bid was the modern way. I think it makes sense (*), and I dont see, why I should only do it only after a 1C opening bid. Seems my impression was wrong, happens. (*) I prefer streamlined agreements, even, if the streamlining may cost me a little bit.

Hi, # 3H instead of 2S, you have discovered a fit. I am not sure, that you have a chance with the GIBs to find out, if the diamond control is missing, but setting trumps early is making life simpler, even when playing with the GIBs. # I dont be believe, that the 3H bid in your auction promises 3 card heart supp. With kind regards Marlowe

There used to be the BIL, I guess, it is less active now. There used to be the IAC, similar. A common option is to enter the comp. with a robot, the robot does not complain, and the opponents dont mind, when you make a mistake.

# Put the player on a black list. Chances are high, the exp. player is less exp., than he likes to think about himself, and the blacklist stops this kind of *****. And after optimizing your black list, move on. # There are comp. for "strong" players, if reached and honor rank, or have start, they are open for you, it is certainly a an idea to have comp. for players with less points. There exist comp. with a stratified field, my take is, most are paid comp. Finnally, for what's it worth: My cureent BBO Point rank is 5+, I dont think myself of an expert, but equally I am no a N/I player either, and I know quite a few equally ( or even stronger player, that have the same amout / or less, i.e. it is debatable, if you would achieve, what you want to achieve.

I am not a TD, but: Dummy is not active, declarer is calling / requesting the cards to be played from Dummy. If declarer requests a non legal card to be played, and it gets played, than the opponents see, that a non legal card got played, and if they play a card themself, they accept the card played. This is similar to bids out of turn, if the following player bids on, he accepts the out of turn bid. The director can still adjust the score to make sure, that other tables are not affected, but accepting the non legal card by playing on, basically says: we are fine with this, and if they are fine with it, they dont need a penalty card to compensate possible damage, they dont believe they received by the play of the illegal card. ........................................................................................................ The penalty card is not a penalty for the offending side, it is compensation for the nonoffending side. This is not the same, although in effect it will be most of the time. If the compensation is not enough, the TD can still adjust, the famous example: The revoke allowes 3NT to make with overtricks, without the revoke it would go down. The compensation is not enough, 3NT still makes, the TD adjusts to the most likely outcome.

I agree, but I am getting old, although it is unclear, if I ever was young enough to open this one as a w2, if I remember correctly, memory fails with age. The comment was directed at: West makes a value showing X, most likely with trump tricks in the opponents suit. When will East pass, if he refuses to pass with the given hand? Surely he wont pass, when all his values are in spade, he wont pass, with min, and he could hold at most 9/10 HCP for the w2 (?), but with a 6 carder and 10HCP he may just open 1S or not. We have a style discussion somewhere. I would also have assumed, that 2S is a min hand, and the West hand is min for the bid. But as already said, to each his own.

This sounds like a playable, but old fashioned style. Another style think, which is quite frequent: at which strength is partner making a T/O versus bidding his 5 card major. This leads to upperbounds of overcalls. How much liberties are taken, when making a T/O, when facing a passed hand, is it still full value, or could it be lighter? less frequent, but still coming up a reasonable number of times: Opening at the 1 level vs. going through an artificial strong 2C opener (I am assuming you play 2C as strong).
