  1. The thought of voice was so daunting that I didn't even update to this version, nor any subsequent version, and I will not unless I am assured that voice can be completely and fully disabled.
  2. Often I see the "Deep Finesse" button lit up. When I click on it, the "Deep Finesse" logo appears, but nothing else happens. How does one use "Deep Finesse"? Thank you.
  3. So in other words, even though players are required to alert conventinal bids, the failure to do so is not penalized. That makes a LOT of sense. We will certainly get everyone to alert conventional bids THAT way...cough cough cough. What ever happened to the policy of FULL DISCLOSURE?? You will all notice that my original post did not claim injury...all it did was ask if NO ALERT was the proper procedure, and further, did the director make a reasonable ruling? Most seem to agree that an alert was the proper thing to do, and that the ruling was absurd. I don't think injury should have anything to do with the matter...if a procedure is not followed, there should be a penalty...PERIOD. Otherwise the rule is a paper tiger.
  4. You all miss the point. I passed the 4♣ bid BECAUSE I thought it was natural, in the absence of an alert, and I didn't want them to run somewhere else if I doubled. I did not double for the same reason. And thinking the 4♣ bid showed some kind of strength, I was not about to start bidding ♠s at the 5 level opposite a passed hand. And as has been pointed out, any bid by me would have been doubled and been down a few. So I certainly think there WAS harm. Everyone should know the BBO policy on alerts...there is no risk of "waking up" partner, because partner cannot see or hear the alerts. So the ONLY excuse for NOT alerting is a sinister one...to improperly muddy the auction and deceive the opponents. And then the poor dears can always feign innocence by hiding behind a rule that does not apply to BBO. And the TD's rulings were absurd, ignorant and ridiculous...a 2♥ opening DEFINITELY IS a pre-empt, and as has also been pointed out, even IF 4♣ was Gerber (which it was not), the 4♦ response does NOT show one ace as the TD asserted. It all STINKS...period.
  5. I did in fact ask what both bids were, and received no answer. We were under a strict time limit also, so there was not time to fuss.
  6. Well, I just think it was "dirty" bridge by my opps, and even "dirtier" directing by the TD...his take on the bidding was completely absurd and non-sensical, and his failure to warn the opps was inexcusable.
  7. [hv=d=s&v=e&n=sk872hakqj9dakjc3&w=s9h8dqt98763ct976&e=saqjt6h5d54ckqj42&s=s543ht76432d2ca85]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Auction: -- -- -- 2♥ P 4♣ P 4♦ P 4♥ P P P (no alerts) TD: topbridgep date May 2, 2005 Individual Tourney I called director at end of hand. His ruling is given above. I asked opps "why no alerts"...their answer was "no alerts above 3NT" One injury was that I did not bid clubs because of their phony club bid. I forget what the opening lead was, but it was not a club, probably for the same reason.
  8. My LHO opened 2H...partner passed...RHO bid 4C (no alert)...I passed...LHO rebid 4D (no alert)...p passed...RHO bid 4H...then all passed. RHO turmned up with a singleton club and LHO with a singleton diamond!! I called TD and asked if alerts were required...ruling was no, the bids were Gerber and showing 1 Ace, neither requiring alerts. I asked "Gerber over a pre-empt?" TD responded "there was no pre-empt, there was a weak 2H opening" What do you all think of this ruling?
  9. I love the "copy from chat" feature, because I often play with people who speak other languages, and I can copy their chat and paste into a translator and get some idea of what they are saying. But today, I found I was unable to copy the chat of my partner at all...in fact, right-clicking on my partner's name in the chat window had no effect at all...nothing came up. Is there a reason for this? I'd like to be able to translate my partner's chat as well as the opps and kibitzers. Thanks.
  10. Can Uday and Fred, in a future version, create some way to prevent me from leaving four or five winning tricks in dummy without an entry? :)
  11. 4.2.1 is VERY nice! I use the "copy from chat" feature ALL the time, to copy German into a translator and come out with some semblance of English! And the "join so-and-so's table" is quite nice and very useful also. Thanks.
  12. I'm a good intermediate player, and a better teacher than a player, and I'd like to mentor one serious student of the game...novice or beginner or intermediate. I'm in the Eastern time zone of USA. My aim would be to cover basic bidding and playing topics and a few basic conventions, and put the player on a sound footing to advance further. Please respond to "ducky_rh", I'm online frequently.
  13. With all the foreign languages spoken on BBO, the ability to copy from chat would be VERY useful, becasue then we could copy and paste into a translator without having to type the whole phrase in, and be able to respond in time. So what can we all do to bore Fred to the extent that he'll implement this for us?
  14. There's a simple reason why Yahoo bridge has a small following, which you'd know if you ever played there. There are no ratings nor scores kept. Each hand stands on its own. So players bid and bid and bid and will never pass, because there is nothing to punish poor play or reward good. Then when they win the auction and see that they cannot make the hand, they simply depart the table, again, with impunity. So Yahoo bridge will repulse even the casual bridge player very quickly.
  15. Well! Uday's suggestion did the trick, probably with the help of all other suggestions also! Everything now works. Thank you all!
  16. Thanks, ack_hh, I tried your little program as directed. Now when I try to download a .lin file, I get the error message "Missing or corrupt language file. Program aborting." in every case. So I will now try Uday's suggestion and re-install the software. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
  17. OK, I have tried all suggestions. No dice. Ben, when I go to "Properties" according to your instructions, the "Type of File" is shown as "LIN File", NOT "Bridge Movie". And there is no "Open" option under "Properties". When I go back to the file and click "Open" I get the unintelligible Lotus WordPro file. And Rebound, I tried your way also, and WAS able to at least get the "Open With" option, and I was then able to add "NetBridgeVu.exe" to the list of programs from which to choose, but when I try to open the file that way, I get the error message: "Missing or corrupt language file. Program aborting." (probably because it's still trying to open a WordPro file and not a .lin file. So my problem persists. How do I download the files from the web site to my computer as something other than WordPro files? The computer offers me no choices, it just does it automatically. Help is much appreciated, thanks, but I'm afraid I need more <_< By the way, if it matters, I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition, with latest version of Internet Explorer.
  18. Hmmm...my computer has saved these files as Lotus WordPro files, not .lin files, and when I right-click, I get no option about which program to open them with. So far I can see no way to save these files as .lin files...my computer automaticaly makes Lotus WordPro files out of them. :) HELP!
  19. My computer opens these files in Lotus WordPro word-processor, and they are all but unintelligible. I see nowhere that I can tell the dumb computer which program to open the files with. How can I open them so I can read them? Thanks!
  20. My connection is fine for all other purposes, and while I dont have the fastest computer in the world, it's far from the slowest, about 6 years old and 450mhz I think. I timed it again this afternoon...with 5600 some-odd players, it took almost 4 minutes to load both lists. Soon I'll switch to cable from dial-up, which should get me more like the 4-second response you describe, Hog.
