  1. I called it other but what I prefer is referred to as "modified" Ogust. Several of the people I play with like to use weak 2's that might be a five card suit so our responses to 2NT after a 2♥/♠are minors=5 card suit, majors=6 card suit and red suits='stop' i.e.weak, black suits='go' strong. I.e. 3♣=strong w/5 card suit etc. Responses to 2NT after 2♦are: 3♣=strong with unspecified 3 card major, 3♦=any weak hand, 3♥/♠=four cards in the other major and 3NT=strong w/no major. These responses allow expanded distribution and, as some have said, 'less discipline'.
  2. I prefer not to use 2D waiting. Most of the better partnerships I play in show controls over 2C. I.e. 2♦=0controls 2♥=1control 2♠=2controls 2NT=3controls 3♣=4controls etc. where K=1control and A=2controls. With the hand in question, if partner responds 2♦, showing no A's or K's, you sign off in 3NT as you know that slam has less than 50% chance. If partner responds 2♥, showing one K, you know he has the K of clubs,(the only one missing) and you can investigate a small slam. If partner bids 2♠, showing one ace or two k's, you know he has the A of hearts (the only one missing,he can't have 2 K's)and you will almost surely bid a slam. And if partner bids 2NT, showing an A and a K, or three K's, you know he has both of the missing controls and will probably bid a grand. It seems to me that it is much easier for the big hand to find out a few things about responder's hand than it is for responder to find out lots of things about opener's big hand. The most relevant things for slam bidding are often controls followed by support for a long suit.
  3. Something that some of the better players at my club use is 5/6 card weak twos with modified Ogust; the west hand would qualify for opening 2D. In this instance east would pass or raise diamonds to add to the preemt but if responder had a better hand and replied 2NT, opener would rebid 2S showing the upper half of the range and four hearts. What I meant continue, against a pair of these players, north would not get a chance to open 1S but then but then would get the chance to bid 3D to show the majors if your system allows. East might or might not bid 4D; in either case South will bid 4S. East might or might not continue with 5D depending on vulnerability. If he does South will likely either double or bid 5S again depending on vulnerability.
