I had exactly this problem - BBO dropping me from tournaments every 20-30mins and no other internet issues. I am using a DLink Powerline Adapter from my router to my PC and this seemed to have a role in the problem, because if I used a long Ethernet cable instead, it was fine. To solve it I had to use a script that starts on my PC at login and pings the router continually. Of course I have no idea why this works, or why it only affects BBO. Instructions from:

Identifying Dummy during Play
DaveRolyat replied to mickeymzm's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Having played on BBO for years I kind of agree with the OP. Often when playing a hand on BBO I have to double-check and remind myself which is my hand and which is dummy. They look the same and I can see both hands, but I have to remind myself which one opps can see and which one they can't. It's not quite the same as holding 13 cards in your hand and having the other 13 laid out on the table. -
I'd advocate that BBO approximates to real bridge practices where possible. i) Bidding hidden after first card played ii) Even more importantly, partner alerts and explains the meaning of a bid, rather than the bidder. Both seem so easy to get right.

Strictly speaking it's BBO's playing field

I guess it's for marketing to casual surfers, but i too have seen it abused

I've just realised what my strange recent issue actually was. When we've all completed a tournament board, and are on the next board, I look at the results from "other tables", but some are missing. Using the Refresh button from that individual board's results page has little or no effect. If I go back to the tournament board results "my table", highlight that board and press Refresh, then go into "other tables", then the results are all there. Issue - the Refresh button when on the "other tables" screen doesn't work, or maybe it's not supposed to?

Is sandbagging a psyche bid?
DaveRolyat replied to palmergnaw's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Imagine he passes, it's your bid next, and his partner alerts "could have 15pts, but who knows?" - it would freak me out - that'not really a convention -
Am I the only one that can't see the scores from completed boards during a tournament, even if I press "Refresh"? https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=695317A6F53EE49E&id=695317A6F53EE49E%21118&parId=695317A6F53EE49E%21116&o=OneUp Not sure if the upload/link works.....

It is a bit odd, particularly in a short tournament with only 6 or 8 boards, in that the strong players continue to play each other and the weaker ones play each other. That would be like Manchester City playing Liverpool every week, and only losing points if they didn't win by as many goals as Norwich did against Sheffield United (I know that's stretching the argument a little).

I still get lots of blanks in the "other tables" scores, even when the boards are complete? I'll try to upload an image if i get it again.

Hi Is the HTML5 version complete now? When I play a tournament, look at the results of the last board/s, I have to click on and off several times before my score updates, and even when it does I can't see the scores for all the other playings of the same boards/s.

I thibnk it looks clean and modern. Everything is there, when you find it, and we'll all get used to it. Even better, it now works through my work firewall.

Amazing - now works for me from behind firewall/proxy
DaveRolyat replied to DaveRolyat's topic in BBO Support Forum
Sorry, you and the devs. After years of BBO being blocked for me, I think due to the port used, it now seems to work on the V3 version. -

The new HTML5 version works from behind our firewall/proxy now, thanks! Are you using a different port or something? -

Is it a safety play against a 5:0 trump split? At IMP you can afford it, but at MP giving a trick away could be costly.
-
Thanks for looking barmar, I didn't realise that it only included a subset of my tournament play, in that all the daily free ones are excluded.
-
I'm a bit baffled by this. I keep getting locked out for having a low tournament completion rate, apparently 73%. I only play a few each week, but I can't honestly remember quitting any. Is there anywhere on the site that we can check the calculation and see what's causing it to be so low?

Does GIB play instantly with singleton?
DaveRolyat replied to steve2005's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
I'm not sure, I've seen human players have "autoplay singleton" on, which gives a lot away. I've also seen GIB "think" for quite a while when it only has one choice, even on the last card, so not sure if it tries to disguise any of its play. -
It seems that some of the connection problems are not just proxy/port related. I believe that the BBO URL is on some kind of blacklist in the UK. For example if I try to play bridge on the Virgin Trains Wi-Fi, it says that BBO is not allowed, on the grounds that it's a "game" and is therefore deemed a waste of bandwidth I guess. I think the same is true of some university access controls. Is there any way that you could have another URL, or even better a roving one, gets us into BBO without our servers seeing the current URL?

Responding 1NT to partner's open
DaveRolyat replied to DavidV52's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I also often wonder about the power of responding 1NT, as opposed to bidding a 4 card suit. The main advantage of 1NT for me is that it's a fairly tightly defined limit bid. An opener, plus a 1NT response, often gets you the balance of power in balanced positions. Partner then immediately knows whether a game is on, or we're in part-score territory, of which 1NT is good, or we at least know which pair have the slight balance of point. If I respond with a suit at the one level, it's unlimited and forcing. Strictly speaking, I think 1NT denies a 4 card intermediate suit, but I've got into the habit of only bidding 5 card suits with 6-9 pts. -
Great, many thanks, look forward to that..

Am I the only one having problems with the new mobile app? On my iPad, if I put "Confirm Cards" on, as I like to do when on a touch screen, it's really buggy to play dummy's cards when I'm declarer. I have to constantly click off and on the screen to get them to play. I usually have to go to "History" then back again to get it to acknowledge the click. Also the text in the app on my Samsung phone is too large and overlaps itself in various places, for example during bidding.
