Don't open 4-4-4-1 hands with 12 or 13 points
creatbid replied to PhilG007's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I really don't understand where are the problems. First are comments made by Paul Mendelson that "they really need three bids to convey their content". Who teach you to raise three times with a low-limit only? For example, will you bid 1♥-2♠ with Axxx Axxxx Kx Jx?What's more, if you give up the first chance to open your hand, will you more probably have better opportunity to discribe what you hold after opponents waste the space of bidding?Secondly, how are you sure that this 1nt usually gets down with a double? It's frequent to see an opener with a free bid to play 1nt but they don't as you worry about deserve down and low-limt. Maybe you just need try a better play?I really hope you review again the whole of basic concepts of contract bridge before making yourself stuck on those problems you posted here. -

Someone please teach me how TOXs work
creatbid replied to ahydra's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
The most important is to find the fit with your partner not to just care yourself unless your suit is self-sufficiently strong. -
It seems you don't like a pass so your topic is still here, but the only favorable thing for you is your distribution:2-♥ and 3+support including a stopper at least on other suits. Your hand isn't enough for a take-out double(12+pts, especially when your 3jacks are the most useless hcps), and JTxxx is a bad suit for 2♣overcall. Moreover, the forcing 1nt has a range stronger than the one showing 2-♥ and 6-10hcp and your pd has passed. If you really want to buy a contract by the double, you shall do it only when opponents not you are vulnerable so that you will lose less with penalty doubles.

The original poster focused mainly on the best bid after this auction 1♦-X-P-1♠-P-?. You shall open a new topic if you want to discuss your own issue. -
If you would had read former replys especially ahydra's, it would seem that you were just satirizing scarletv's X and plagiarizing ahydra's idea. If not you should have read former replys before showing your comments. You did make me more confused of how the post between ahydra's and mine disappeared. But I also strongly suggest 2♠ and 3♦ be the 1st responce. Since both of them are good raises, S feels free to try a new suit(♠/♥) for a better fit of N-S. Moreover, 2♠ will be better discription than 3♦. By 3♦ N-S may lose 3nt even with ♦stoppers on N. But 2♠ shows ♠stoppers, likely stopped♥, good raise on♣ and asks for ♦stoppers. X tells much less about N's hand, and so does showing 4+♥.
-
It's no problem about 1♥. Opening preempt with 12hcp is ridiculous. Secondly, you had best bid 2♥ when vulnerable. But with favorable vulnerability, notice that any of your opponents can bid a take-out x after 2♥. I suggest 3♥ like preempt because it's easy for 2♠, 3♦, 3♣ etc to score better than 3♥ or even 4♥ with down without double.
-
3♥ is mush better than 2nt for S because most of his hcps are on a single suit - ♥. But I still can't conjecture any possible and reasonable bidding to get a slam. After N bid 4♦ to deny ♥supports and to show a distributed hand(5+♠ and 5+♦), what's the way for him to tell his ♣control to S?By 5♣?And generally S daren't try slams(the only way is rkcb)on his own with 3 keys only, especially after N passed first. Even though S plays rkcb to go on and stop at 5♦ immediately with 1 key only on N, is it easy for N to raise to 6D although he has void♣?6♦ can be interesting, but not contract bridge. 6♥ is just a joke made by a selfish bidder with great luck.
-
When 2♦ showed ♠, the double shouldn't be negative. And N had no way to show his 4♥. The only way to bid N's great hand was cue bids to try 3nt, 5♣ or even slams

1nt and other are the most ridiculous bids

Responses with a Minimum after Stayman
creatbid replied to Elyk25's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
It seemed that the range of your 1nt was 16-18 when you said you had 2A, 2K and ♦Q for the minimum. Since your pd was stopped on ♦ only with singleton♣ and the least hcps for stayman, it's safer to pass 2♦ than to bid 2nt. Although 3♦ also promises 5+♦, how could your pd expect the pass was as strong as 3♦?3♦ absolutely became invitational trying 5♦, 3nt or even slams with your support and agreement. Of course, you two could stop at 3♦ or 4♦. -
It's your call..high level decision...IMPs, favourable,.

I don't think you usually encountered such kind of board, in which 3 players had a void, unless you like goulash matches. Moreover, not all interesting issues of this board are about voids. Do you know by reasonable defence 5♣ will never be made?Do you know why the double you voted against 5♣ scores worse than 5♥?Do you know this board can product a great slam? For example:http://tinyurl.com/hl75nue Any board can be interesting when the possible result is far from how you expect in advance. I think you should read this board and this topic with a more humble mind even when you think you are much more experienced than foolbar. He didn't aim at anyone by a not nice way while you seemed to indicate his topic shouldn't be here. Maybe you can ask diana_eva to remove ithttp://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif -

In terms of W, S dare double 4♥ when W holds ♠AQ and ♦AQ so S have ♠K,♦K and ♣AK at least. Moreover, S probably has A or KX or void on♥. E has 6cards outside♥ and W holds 4tricks on♠♦. E-W can tolerate 1 loser on♥ and 2 on♣. 4H-X-XX is reasonable. Of course W can pass, but however N will bid 5C. In terms of E, he will pass 5C without that redouble but may bid 5♥ to indicate 0♣ instead of pass. I can imagine some brave players at the seat of W will gamble 6♥ on 1 more trick on♠♦http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif Let's come back to the terms of W for 2nd question. W thinks they holds 3suits(except♣) against vulnerable N-S and then doubles 5♣ because only 5♣x-1 scores better for N-S. Although S will get 5♣x-1 by the most reasonable ♥lead, in most situations N-S will get worse result by such unfavorable vulnerabilityhttp://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif It's really an interesting hand for everyone to discuss and learnhttp://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif -
You absolutely can open xnt with such unbalanced hand, but any responce goes above the lowest level and it will cause some problems to show your minor as the topic indicates. I can say a large numbers of exerts and world-class players use Don't/Brozel against a 1nt-hand while Lionel is more useful and gradually more popular?Oops maybe you don't know what's Don't/Brozel/Lionel of expert bridge:)
-
No-trump-hand is balanced. It's no logic to open XNT with unbalanced 6322 and to make the whole bidding at a higher level. How about open G3NT?LOL(ing)
