i live in Canada and as for "system" I first learned the charles goren style of play and that is mostly what I use.

let's say partner opens 1M and you have 4 of his suit and opening points. Game seems almost certain so how do you indicate that you should go to game (and if he has a powerhouse investigate slam) while setting trump as M?

I bid 5♣. Really wanted to play it too! If partner has anything less than a maximum pass opponents could easily have game and they shouldn't have that hard a time finding a fit since they are both marked with shortness in clubs. I do not believe I have ever gotten such a long suit before.

okay just now on BBO I got dealt a wild hand. Unfortunately the host banned me from the table after I made my bid so I'm not 100% on the cards but I had 9! clubs to the QJT. We are white, opponents are red (this is described as white / red?) Bidding goes Pass, Pass and it's my bid. My concern is if I pre-empt at the four level my opponents might still find a major suit game. I had a fairly weak hand and do not recall the exact distribution of the other cards. Maybe 3 diamonds one heart? I think I had around 8 HCP in total.

I did end up playing the K, fearing that I might lose my club trick if I dawdled but at least I considered the T before hand. Declarer, not surprisingly, rose with the ace. Le sigh.

Am I allowed to ask my opponents what a particular bid means? Must they answer?

with a 4-4 fit and my ace rich hand we should be able to make 4h a lot of the time even if partner is fairly weak (8 pts)

what are the advantages to redoubling? I guess we save a lot of space if partner wants to try to cuebid his way to slam and we hold the master suit so it's not really the end of the world if our opponents find out about their fit.

my partner opens 1spade, RHO doubles (I presume for take out) and I hold [hv=pc=n&s=sat543ha53dt984ct]133|100[/hv] I kind of want to splinter in spades but I think my hand might be too weak for such aggressive action? I bid 4 spades right away but what would you have bid with this hand?

i was thinking that if i open 1 spade my partner might respond 2 diamonds leaving me in a bit of a pickle. i guess i would be forced to rebid spades at that point.

S : J H : AKQ98 C : void D : QJT9652 obviously a pretty massive hand. I open 1d, partner responds 1 heart, I jump to 3 hearts, partner bids 4 hearts. I guess I could continue to 6 hearts but I feel like partner could have 6 pts with perhaps wasted values in clubs for his response. I guess the inadequacy is in my 3 heart jump response? But what i want to establish trump before I start cue bidding for slam. Where did I go wrong?
