  1. Hi All I would like to check my understanding of using stolen X when opps interfere over a 1NT bid. I appreciate all comments but welcome direct responses to my question(s). 1> 1N-2C-X = stayman - Correct yes/no ? 2> 1N-2D-X = transfer to hearts - Correct yes/no? 3> 1N-2H-X = transfer to spades - Correct yes/no? Would it be correct to think all other doubles on 2 level from 1N opener should be considered as penaulty? ie. 1N-P-2C-2S-X If partnership agree, can stolen X be used to show minor transfers. ie. 1N-2S-X or again are these worth more as penaulty bids? Thanks in advanced :D
  2. Heres a quick one Bidding goes: 1S - P - 2C - 2H - P - 3S What strength would u expect from the responder bidding 3S ?? Thanks in advance
  3. Thanks for your comments. I did consider the 3H cue bid at the time so I was on the right tracks at least. I understand my eror on the 4C bid showing support for Spades although i am not clear as to when a jump bid in a different suit shows support for a suit or can be considered a cue bid. Can someone give me a couple of examples that may show support raises and other that my be cue's please. In saying that i do realise cue's are used once a fit has been found. Maybe I just after some examples of raises that show suit support!!!
  4. Hi all Playing sayc with an unkown partner. In first seat he opens 1♣, Opps over bid with weak 2♥ I am holding this: AKx♠ Jxx♥ Ax♦ Jxxxx♣, We hadn't discussed anything so i simply doubled to show support but appreciate this can be seen as a negative double maybe showing 4X♠. Ultiamtely I was looking for a ♥ stopper from my partner in the hope we could play 3N. My LHO passed and my partner bid 2♠. At this point I scramble to 4♣ as i felt i could not bid NT but I probably got this wrong and appreciate that. My Partner then bids 4♥ so i bid 4N in hope my partner realises this is not asking for aces. Of course my partner responds to this (5♣) so i pass. To summarise the bidding: 1C - 2H - X - P - 2S - P - 4C - P - 4H - 4N - P - 5C Now I do appreciate my bidding probably wasnt the best but when my partner puts down his hand I find he is sittting there with AQx♥. He has a go at me telling me that we should be in NT and i felt that after my X a better bid would have been to show my the !♥ stopper. I have two questions: 1st. What should have been my first repsone to my partner over the 2♥ bid? 2nd. Would 2N after my X from partner been a better bid? partners hand was something like this AJxx♠, AQX♥ Jx♦ Qxxx♣,
  5. Hi I have been looking at introducing NMF into my game but I am told that it is only useful for 2/1 (I play SAYC). The case against it so I have been informed is that it often wrongly used as a new minor if often NOT forcing. Eg. 1♣, 1♠ 1N 2♦ – In this auction I am told that the 2D bid is shows a dislike of playing NT, is NOT forcing and is asking opener to chose suit preference of ♠ or ♣. What I understood of NMF (wrongly or rightly) is that you would not use it with a weak hand of 6-9 points so the new minor is not used to sign off in a preferred suit as in the above example. As you use NMF with a good 10+ hand (as responder) the new minor would CERTAINLY be forcing?? Can I not presume that if both partners have agreed on using NMF then a NEW minor would therefore be forcing? As a beginner/intermediate I do not have years of experience under my belt and I wondered if NMF would add any value to my game. Comments welcome.
  6. Thanks for all the info guys. Appreciated!!
  7. OK I couldnt use the link but have found it via search. Thanks Ben
  8. I am trying to implement standard count, attitude and suit preference into my bridge game but am not clear on certain aspects. My understanding so far is that the following echo’s mean: Hi then low = encourage / even number of cards Low then high = discourage / odd number I also understand that some partnerships may prefer different order of signals. Ie. attitude then count or count then attitude. As a newbie I am not sure what order I should play but so far I only play attitude and show my suit preference on discards. Example: On partners lead my first discard would signal attitude so a high card would be encourage and a low card would be discourage. I am right in thinking that anything 6+ is considered high? Say partner has lead king from AK and I am holding Q94 of that suit. I would lay the 9 to encourage the suit. If I was holding 52 doubleton I would lead the 5 to complete the hi-low echo to encourage. At the moment if I can’t follow suit (opps or partners) my first discard would be to signal suit preference. Is this correct? If I was to lay say the 2,3 or 4 of clubs as a discard then to me that is signalling a spade. Discarding a high club would be asking for club suit. Regarding count, do I show this on opps lead? If not how do i show this? Hi/low being even, low-hi being odd. I am sure I am missing a lot here but I have not been able to find any detailed examples of card signalling on the internet. Any links would be appreciated. Advanced thanks.
  9. 1N - 2♦ > 3♥ On the basis of 1N=15-17hcp, 3♥ shows 4 card support and 17hcps as I understand it. As transfers don't guarantee any number of hcp why would anyone want to raise level to 3 as you could be faced with less than 20hcp. Am i missing something here or do the laws of mathematics prove that 9 card fit and maybe less than 20hcp in total is still a good shot at 3. Comments welcome.............. ;)
