  1. Thank you Ben, The reason i have asked is that a couple of people from another forum have asked me for details of this one, i am sure they WILL join BBO when they see the friendly atmosphere and discussion that takes place here but i was asked for details of how to sign up to this forum. best wishes Paul
  2. Hi, Could you tell me please if one needs to be a member of bridgebase online in order to sign up to the forums discussion group. many thanks Paul
  3. thankyou all, interesting replies, i have to say i took 3nt the same way as mr1303, showing @ 20+ points. anyway this is what partner actually had: ♠ 7 6 3 ♥ A 9 5 ♦ AQJ8 ♣ K 9 8 Now what baffled me was partners reply when later i said i didn't understand the 3NT bid, i am in protective seat and bidding your hand? was the reply i think that ops failure to bid over 2H suggested to my partner that south too was weak and therefore i must have a good hand!!
  4. after the following bidding sequence: all vul N........E.........S..........W 2♥ pass pass 3NT what do you take the 3NT bid to mean? yours red
  5. for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of reading Ben's fascinating thread on signals i strongly recommend you to do so, super stuff.
  6. thank you very much for such a quick reply Ben, i will look at at the thread you suggest. cheers red
  7. hello, I have noticed on several profiles UDCA, anyone care to explain to me what this is? at a guess i think it is a discard system(unusual discards maybe?) but no idea really. cheers red
  8. i have been looking at roman key card with the intention of adding it to my game as it seems to be a very popular convention used by most players, but i see there are 2 versions, 0341 and 1430. My question is what is the difference between the two? and which one if any is the bettter.
  9. hi jillybean, Thankyou for your kind invite much appreciated. My BBO I.D. is red dwarf but unfortunately 8pm pst is @ 5am here, all the same if one is taking place earlier please let me know. Best wishes Paul
  10. Hi Jilly, i would pass, pard is sat above opening hand and 1NT may be the better contract with at least 21 points your way, if opener then bids 2H i would then show spades. of coarse this is probably completely and utterly the wrong thing to do ;)
  11. I have yet to play in a teams match and would very much like to  Are there any BIL members that would like to organise a teams match for sunday evening say between 8pm and 11 pm (bst) :). If so leave a message and prefered time and we could perhaps organise one at the most convenient time for all. even better if there are any experienced players willing to give up a little time and would like to try their hand at Directing a match for us this would be super. cheers Paul
  12. i am a member of a couple of other clubs(although i rarely play in either nowadays) that use ratings and the problems are many. 1)ratings seem to encourage "those inclined" to cheat to do so, and a few members have been caught and dismissed from one club for doing so. 2) you get strong partnerships waiting for less experienced members to start a table and join them so as to have an afternoon of "bunny bashing". this is one of the biggest bugbears 3) you are much less likely to have strong players partner weaker players, that just can't be good for the game 4) it is a regular occurance for a strong partnership to sit and wait for over an hour to get any ops. If ratings where to be implemented here i would bet the amount of tables asking for adv+ or exp only tables would drop, people would rather win higher ratings than enjoy competative games So for the above reasons and probably a few i have forgotten i am against any form of ratings
  13. i chose 1♦ but then again i was taught never to open NT with 2 doubletons B) . looking at the replies i see that this is(now?) not the case. Is this because this hand is in 3rd seat? or can you open NT with 2425 or similar hands in any seat?
  14. just press show results, you dont have to take part to see how others are voting.
  15. I play pin point astro, so on first hand i would bid 2♥ to show both majors, on hand 2 i pass. Also on hand 1 if sat west and east opens 1NT and no interference from south i bid 2NT showing exactly 12 points, although i prefer it to show 11-12 and save 2♠ (11points)for minor transfer,
  16. I have come across this hand from the U.S. nationals and the bidding is thus, W.........N..........E............S 1♣......1♠......pass.......3NT? pass... 6NT....end [hv=d=w&v=n&n=skjxxxxxhakdaxcxx&w=sxxhjxxdxxcakqjxx&e=s10xh10xxxxd10xxxcxx&s=saqhqxxdkqjxxc10xx]399|300|[/hv] West decided not to X as he didn't want ops running to 7♠ and leads the Q♣ expecting to punish ops bidding by taking the first 6 tricks, or so you would think, actually they make their 6NT, anyone care to guess how.
  17. being an intermediate player the more i think of this the harder it gets, i would play west for the king but i would play the ace off first and attack clubs, obviously i need east to have ace of hearts, if also holding ace club the job is done no matter what the diamond holding, so assuming west has the ace club and leads small diamond i then have to decide whether opening lead is from Kxxx or Jxxx i play for Kxxx and play the Q on 2nd round. while iam here i'll check symbols for future posts : ) ♣♦♥♠ p.s. thankyou for your welcome Ben (inquiry)
  18. I agree it does look as if he missed discard on 2nd round of hearts and ran for the 6 remaing tricks, but that goes to show that claims should rarely be accepted anyway without an explanation of how play will continue. Therefore is there a case for on line tournaments to have an option for no claims allowed? 1) it rarely saves time as board could, in most cases, have been played out by the time one has typed in line of play and ops have decided to accept or reject. 2) stops UI if rejected. 3) stops misclicks and gaining extra trick by default or in lesser cases (i hope) stops unethical gaining of extra trick by claiming and hoping ops accept without due thought.
  19. I have to agree with csdenmark, i wouldn't hesitate a pass. If LHO X and p XX he is asking me to do 1 of 2 things, 1) pass with values or 2) bid lowest 4 card suit here being hearts, this happened a couple of weeks ago at local club and i passed pards XX with 8 or 9 points(cant quite remember) and contract made.As it happens it is the same with X by RHO i pass and pard is forced to XX and then i bid 2H with the hand given. any bid by me is a transfer after X by RHO XX asking pard to bid clubs.
