The art of balancing

This was the full hand : [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sj4h10852dk10942ck9&w=st973hj3da7caqj85&e=sk865h6dqj653ct62&s=saq2hakq974d8c743]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] 5♥ makes exactly and 4♠ is down a lot. But maybe more interesting than the result is East's bid of 4♠ as a preempt against the likely 4♥ coming on his left. What do you think about it?

Which is weaker bid?
temp3600 replied to adhoc3's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I play that partner's second double is not punitive, it shows extras, so I cannot leave the double in. It might work to pass but is a poor idea in my opinion. Note that RHO heard his partner bid diamonds and spades, and prefers spades. I would pass with a hand that had good defense against one spade, so pass can't be that weak. 1NT shows some points, so again it can't be the weakest bid. This leaves 2♣ and 2♥. I had this conception that bidding a second suit should show a little something in terms of high cards, but after thinking about it, I think it is playable to only have it show distribution. So let's say 2♣ and 2♥ can be made with 0 HCP. To me, 2♣ shows much more distribution than 2♥ though : 4 hearts and 5+ clubs at least, whereas 2♥ often is made on xxx xxxx xxx xxx, and sometimes xxx xxx xxxx xxx. So to me 2♥ is the weakest of the lot. I would've bid 2♣ at my first bid with this hand. -
♣7. I need to hit the round suit where they only have one stopper, and I think it is more likely to be clubs.
-
I pass, for the same reasons mentioned by several previous posters : partner is likely to have a few spades, be very short in clubs, and 5-5 in the red suits.
-
4♣. Let's see if partner can bid 4♥. If the sequence gets confusing or crazy, I can always clear everything up with 6NT.
-
3NT. Far from minimum hand, not interested in playing in spades.

Very very bad defense

When I lead against NT, I consider a suit bad if all cards are below the 9 (included). Playing standard carding, I show remaining count. -
You hold AQ2 AKQ974 8 743, red vs white at Imps, in 4th seat. The bidding goes : (1♣) p (1♠) 2♥ (2♠) 3♥ (4♠) ? 2♠ showed 4-card support. 3♥ was competitive with 3+ hearts. What do you do now? Thank you for your time, Michael
-
This is a two-part problem. You hold KQ1085 KQ2 AQ82 K, red vs white in second seat at Matchpoints, and RHO opens with 2♥. 1. What do you bid? 2. If you bid anything below 4♥, the bidding goes ... - (4♥) - p - (p) - back to you. What now? Thank you for your time, Michael

Tourney report for non experts.

1. I don't like the 3♠ bid much. In my opinion, I have too much high cards, am missing at least one diamond, and don't have a hand that is clearly 3NT-oriented. Anyway, what is 5♣? Is it natural, or pass/correct? If the former, do I have a bid that asks partner about the quality of his suit? If I do, I use it, if not, i bid 6♣. If the latter, I simply correct to 5♦. 2. Partner's preemptive style obviously matters a lot here. Can he have an outside A and K, or 2 outside kings? Can he have 8 hearts to the QJT and out? Anything from stopping in 4♥ to investigating 7♥ could be right. -
Sorry but I fail to appreciate this joke. So, you do appreciate it?

I rebid 2♣ with a small singleton and 1NT with an honor singleton.

pass double or spades?
temp3600 replied to jocdelevat's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would pass. I think 4♠ will be doubled -2 a lot of the time, -1 some of the time, and very rarely make. 3NT will often be cold, but not always. Sometimes partner has slow stoppers in their minors, or they have very balanced hands and don't have time to setup 9 tricks before we have 5, or we can immediately take 3 tricks in one of the majors. -
Can a diamond return give the contract? Yes if declarer has K10xxxx Qxx AJx A. But that would mean partner asked for a diamond return with the bare ♦K. I think partner should return his middle heart with only the ♦K, not the ♥J. He needs us to hold ♦J10 for a diamond return to work, but with that holding we don't need encouragement in diamonds to play one. So I would play a diamond, because partner should have KJ or the A.

Same line as Jlall. Basically, starting with clubs fails if the second round of the suit is ruffed by the defender with 4 trumps : we are stuck. Diamonds are more flexible - if they divide well for us (3-3, 4-2 or 1=5) we are home, and if not (5=1) then we can always setup the clubs, because the trump and club lenghts will be in the same hand, so again we are home. Just to nitpick : the remark about West being 6-5 and East 4=4=1=4 is actually unnecessary for the play analysis. Even in that case clubs can be setup and trumps drawn.
-
I would go with the first choice, 2♣ - 2♦ - 3♣. It tells partner his club holding is the key to 3NT, which is exactly what I want to convey.
-
I would throw a club first, then a heart. If declarer throws a heart from dummy, I throw a second heart at my third discard, otherwise a diamond.
-

3♣ if it is non-forcing, otherwise 2NT.

In the New Topic page, above the big white rectangular field where the text goes, you have a bunch of buttons to enhance the display of your post. The first line buttons (B, I, U, FONT, SIZE, COLOR) modify the text aspect. The second line buttons (http://, IMG, @, QUOTE, CODE, LIST, HIDDEN) insert special objects, not necessarily bridge-related. The sixth line contains the suit symbols : ♣ ♦ ♥ ♠ ♣ ♦ ♥ ♠ ♦. Clicking on one of these symbols inserts them in your text. The third, fourth and fifth-line buttons insert bridge hands or part of hands. When you want to add a bridge-related object and click one of these buttons, another window opens, with a form in it. You fill it in, and when you click Generate, the object is created and added to your text. a Fullhand : [hv=d=s&v=b&n=sakqjth9876d543c2&w=s9876h543d2cakqjt&e=s2hakqjtd9876c543&s=s543h2dakqjtc9876]399|300|Scoring: IMP comments go here[/hv] one Hand : [hv=d=s&v=b&s=s543h2dakqjtc9876]133|100|Scoring: IMP comments go here[/hv] one Suit :[hv=n=sq92&w=st3&e=skj4&s=sa8765]399|300|comments go here[/hv] Finally, the six buttons SouthWest, SouthEast,NorthEast, NorthWest, NorthSouth and EastWest allow the display of only two hands. For example, SouthWest gives : [hv=d=s&v=b&w=s9876h543d2cakqjt&s=s543h2dakqjtc9876]266|200|Scoring: IMP comments go here[/hv]

2♥, the QJ of clubs are worthless.

I play this : (2♥) - 3♠ : a 5- to 4-loser hand with a very good spade suit and defense. Non forcing. AKQxxx x AKx Qxx. (2♥) - X 2NT! - 3♠ : similar in strength to (2♥) - 3♠, but with a worse spade suit, i.e. a good 5-card suit or a broken 6-card suit. Non forcing. AKJTx x AKxx Axx. (2♥) - X 2NT! - 4♠ : a 4- to 3-loser hand with a very good spade suit and defense, that gives up on slam after responder's negative bid. AKQxxx x AKQ Qxx. (2♥) - X 2NT! - 3♥ 4♣ - 4♠ : a very strong hand with a spade suit, but the shape is unclear. AKQxxx x AKQ Axx is possible, but so is AKJTx x AKxx AKJ. *** The current hand is strong enough for (2♥) - X - 2NT! - 3♥ - 4♣ - 4♠, but there is the question of 3NT. Since I feel this is a no-trump hand, I think I would simply bid it (2♥) - X - 2NT! - 3NT.

3♠. I'm betting on 17 total tricks.
