  3. Yeah, not really a good board in general for GIB I'm not sure which one, whatever the challenges use by default
  4. Scoring +980 was unexpected when I saw dummy... 5. North is marked with minor suit length from the 2N bid, so a major suit switch is clear, especially seeing all the diamond and club honours in dummy. Playing another heart straight away might just concede the rest of the tricks, so the only hope to beat it would be to switch to spades, once they both hold, the only real chance of getting partner back in is with a heart.
  6. Blasting 4N doesn't make sense, because If we get answer of 1 or 4, then we're none the wiser about partner's hand. Of course, with a 5♥ or 5♠ response, we might be able to roll it in with a finesse in trumps. I think X is probably the best action, so we can now workout exactly where we want to be. If they bid spades a 4-3 fit might be playable. X keeps our options open, whereas any forcing 4N, 4H, 4C could just get messy.
  7. We like to call it the Tom Jones 2NT It's not unusual.
  8. Torn between X and then Hearts or 4H directly at this vulnerability, probably would bid 4H. I'd certainly X if we were vulnerable against not.
  9. I'm sure the ask "how many does 1♣ promise?", then bid clubs approach would work here. I think 2♣ should be natural.
  10. As it was, the ♦K was singleton in the North hand, so we escaped with the contract making after the Ace of clubs lead.
  11. [hv=pc=n&w=sakqjh7djt763cj62&e=st65haqj4daq8ckq7&d=w&v=n&b=12&a=1d1hd(Denies%204%20!s)p1s2c3cp3dp4dp5dp6dppp]266|200[/hv] Matchpoints, fairly weak field. 1D - (1H) - X Denies 4 spades. I was holding the East cards at the table and don't think my bidding was the best and 6D was a bit of a punt in the end. Could I make a better bid over 3D? Or thinking about it, is X a better action over 2C? Thanks
  12. I'm not saying that just the 5 spades are the distribution - you've got an overall distributional hand - if you were 5332 then sure, that comment makes sense. You're 6/5 - come alive!
  13. Would you suggest mirroring a Jacoby 2NT system here with 2NT after 2S then? Would that have any downfalls? 2NT showing some sort of 3 card support
  14. 3NT is serious here. I can see where my thoughts of the 4C cue is a big undervaluation, and the hearts certainly have a huge trick source. Thanks for the replies all!
  15. [hv=pc=n&s=sq43hakt972dac632&n=sakjt765hj8dj42ck&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=p1sp2h(GF)p2sp3sp4sppp]266|200[/hv] 2/1 FG, (2H promises 5) My partner and I have discussed this hand together and feel that he (North) is worth a 4C bid rather than just showing a hand with 6 Spades and not much else by bidding 4. However, as South I feel that if 4C were to be bid at the table, I wouldn't be moving because of my 3 small clubs - if partner has Kxx and nowhere to make the discards on the hearts, then we've obviously got a few losers. And similarly, if North sees me bid 4D, looking at Jxx isn't a hopeful sign opposite Axx. Would you be moving with either hand, if: a) It's pairs at a local club and the room is average opposition (if that changes your choice), the majority of the time, they're not in slams. b) It's pairs at a congress c) It's teams Thanks in advance
  16. Unless playing teams, I generally play rough 2C/2D with my partner - shows that minor and a major 5/4 either way round and up to a 9 count in 1st/2nd but weak to intermediate in 3rd/(4th). Responses involve POC major suit bids and bids enquiring about the length of opener's major. We've had some great hands with this: I opened 2♣* and LHO came in with 2H straight away. This passed out, so dummy came down, I then proceeded to draw trumps and get the beer card in at the end. (I say the beer card, but due to being under the legal age to drink, I've resorted to calling it the 'lemonade card'). That was all the match points! In the 2 years or so I (and three other people - all of whom I have partnered) have been playing this, we've had one proper ACOL 2C opener come up and unfortunately it meant we wrong sided the slam. That's one in however many boards I've played. It provides a lot of good results when it's opened on the right hand. Jon
