  1. When I use the new software, both playing and defending a hand, the trump suit is often appearing on the right side of dummy. (I say often rather than always because I haven't use this enough to know if its occurring always or not.) I find this totally distracting!!!
  2. Here is an article of interest to anyone reading this who is unsure of the answer: http://www.tebelius.se/Bridge/Articles/Grant%20Standard%2033.pdf
  3. As far as being in the wrong spot .. where would you suggest? As to the jurisdiction . . .just BBO. EBU and ACBL are not involved.
  4. I have become aware that when you sub for a team game, even if there are just one or two tricks left to play, and even when you are only playing the last board, you will get the loss. Apparently, the players who play the whole match and then leave just because they are behind, stick the subs who are nice enough to finish the match, with a loss. (I don't know if they also get a loss or not.) This seems unfair to me and I think it must make finding subs for teams difficult. How hard would it be to fix this?
  5. I am relatively new to bridge . . but why not rewrite the rule so that it's application is fair all? I suggest something like this: If the reason for the absent pair is deemed by the director, to be at no fault to them, then this: Give the pair who couldn’t finish the session a no play. Look at the average for that pair. If it is less than 50% then give the pair still present the difference between the average and 100% ( 100% - 44% = 56% so present pair would get 56% on all 3 boards.) If the average of the departed team is 50% or greater, then assign a no play to the remaining team. If the reason that the absent pair is deemed to be with fault to them, then find a way to lower their score without affecting all the other players in the same direction. (I am a relatively new player but I think you already are able to do this?) For the pair who is present I would still follow the above formula as they shouldn’t be favored or punished because of the absence of a pair who is not available. I just wrote to the ACBL with this suggestion. I hope that they take it seriously.
  6. This is an old thread so I doubt that anyone is still following it but I have a suggestion directly realated to this thread so here goes: Why not give A+ to the persons who were there and ready to play . . and give those who had to leave but were not at fault a NP? If the absent pair were deemed to be at fault: maybe they got mad and left, or played slowly throughout, or whatever: then give the opponents avg + and the pair deemed at fault avg - ( I wouldn't argue with A++ and A-- in this case since I think it would discourage people from bad behavior.)
  7. I think that playing 2/1 you would just bid your shape after the game force? Since the object is to find the best place to play, then how can it hurt to tell your partner about the actual shape of the hand even knowing that you have not fit in !s's? You are already in a game force so this bid should not imply extras. Playing Flannery in a 2/1 environment then I would think this bid shows a hand that is too strong to open 2!d (Flannery). . so it should show 17+ ?? All of these comments are questions rather than statements so if someone reading this finds fault . . please chime in!
  8. ♥Many folks use online bridge as a training ground for face to face bridge. If there were an option to turn off the bidding box, once the opening lead was made, the online experience would better emulate that of real bridge. It is currently, just too easy to look at the bidding box, when you are trying to remember who bid what, during the play of the hand. This is a crutch that isn't available in real play, and having an option to remove it, would allow players learning the game, to better prepare for their eventual transition to real bridge.♥
  9. I am in need of a partner for the Regional in Irvine CA. It runs from 9/1 - 9/7. I will arrive to the area on 9/1 but probably won't begin playing until 9/2. I play a full card 2/1 with standard carding and either o/e or Laventhol discards. My nickname on BBO is Redbird44. My real name is Terry. Please email me at lupette@comcast.net if interested. Thanks!
  10. The bidding box is great while bidding is in progress, and up until the opening lead, but why not have an option to remove it after the opening lead? I think it is a crutch that will not be available when playing f2f, and so for those of us who want to practice for ACBL or other sanctioned events, it would be great to have an option to make it invisible after play of the hand has started.
  11. Thank you to all who responed :) This is a great way to learn the ropes! I was confused primarily by distinction the director made between deviating from a bidding system and deviating from a convention. I understand now, that the time I mentioned in the post, when I was penalized for a similar infraction during a speedball tournament, was most certainly because of a convention that I bid incorrectly. However, I still do not understand why there would be a difference, as in both circumstances the ops are mislead. Perhaps someone could explain that to me?
  12. I am looking for thoughts, comments, and or observations about the following that transpired during a Speedball tournament: Here is a link to the hand --> http://tinyurl.com/mdvpg54 I was trying to continue to play while the discussion continued but I was declarer and had trouble dealing concurrently, with both trains of thought. Needless to say, this hand was the beginning of a terrible tournament result! Although I don't claim to know much about the rules, this unwillingness to remedy what was (at least from my perspective), obvious damage, seemed a bit unfair to me. Bidding-- W 1c .... N pass . . .E 1nt . . . S pass . . . West 3nt I lead a spade and immediately noticed that W had 5 spades (A 10 9 7 2) I called the director saying this: "Please look at the bidding for this hand" ACBL_TD (Private): which board? →ACBL_TD: this one ACBL_TD (Private): Ok, I can't see or discuss the board until completed. ACBL_TD (Private): will review then →ACBL_TD: ok ty bronco_fan→Table: should have hit 1 s but might work out well →ACBL_TD: bidding caused me to lead unfavorably ACBL_TD (Private): There's no recourse for misclicks. →ACBL_TD: Misclick? ACBL_TD (Private): bronco_fan→Table: should have hit 1 s but might work out well ACBL_TD (Private): he meant to bid 1♠, either way - psych, misclick, all the same. bronco_fan→Table: play please ACBL_TD (Private): We only review for damage IF it's an agreement not disclosed. ACBL_TD (Private): Or IF someone psyches a conventional opening or response. bronco_fan→Table: time →ACBL_TD: so its ok to post a card that says 2/1 or sayc and then NOT open with a 5 card major? ACBL_TD (Private): if not habitual, yes.... ACBL_TD (Private): but as you saw from his comment, he made a mistake →ACBL_TD: last time i did it . . . i was penalized ACBL_TD (Private): His partner didn't know any more or any less than you did, so there's no issue →ACBL_TD: but no worries bronco_fan→Table: is there something wrong too slow ACBL_TD (Private): I cannot comment on what you were penalized for...and if it was a convention that you psyched/misclicked on, then yes you would have received an adjusted score. →ACBL_TD: as i said before no worries →ACBL_TD: Not sure why you would say if it was a convention ACBL_TD (Private): from the ACBL GCC: Not allowed: 2. Psyching of artificial or conventional opening bids and/or conventionalresponses thereto ACBL_TD (Private): if they opened 1♣ instead of 1♠, misclick or psyche is allowed b/c it's not a conventional opening. →ACBL_TD: so its according to that then it's not ok to open 1c with a 5 card major →ACBL_TD: misclick →ACBL_TD: or not →ACBL_TD: there was damage ACBL_TD (Private): No, ,according to that it IS allowed. ACBL_TD (Private): 1♣ is not a convention ACBL_TD (Private): 1♠ opener is not a convention ACBL_TD (Private): therefore allowed. ACBL_TD (Private): If they opened 2♣ by accident /psych (which is a convention) -- it is NOT allowed. →ACBL_TD: no but 2/1 is a system that does not allow for a minor opening when a 5 card major exists ACBL_TD (Private): It doesn't say SYSTEM ACBL_TD (Private): it says convention →ACBL_TD: lol →ACBL_TD: I am going to copy this conversation and paste it on the forum to see how others think about it |66 ACBL_TD (Private): Sure |66 ACBL_TD (Private): Psyches are part of the game. ACBL_TD (Private): And misclicks online even more so. ACBL_TD (Private): http://www.acbl.org/...ntion-Chart.pdf →ACBL_TD: ok fine ACBL_TD (Private): All I ask if posting is that you include the whole conversation |66 ACBL_TD (Private): And the hand |66 →ACBL_TD: The hand is not relevant →ACBL_TD: only your statements →ACBL_TD: i would like to finish the rest of this tournament →ACBL_TD: without interruptions ACBL_TD (Private): Sure |66 then pls stop talking to me also, as I was only responding as supposed to, to your inquiries. →ACBL_TD: yes i agree but for some reason you are continuing on
