Normally you shouldn't have this problem. Why? Because if you play gadgetry like transfer advances, you'll also have bids in your arsenal to show support + side suit (i.e. fit bids). The only case you might be in doubt as to what to bid is when you have bad fit (Hx or xxx) + good side suit (KJT+). In that case you normally bid the side suit because you're not too anxious to drive to the 3 level. Your conclusion seems to be exactly the opposite of what others suggested. Fit jumps needs specific hand type, 4 card fit and a good side suit. with fit jump you get to the 3 level. So we as you said are talking about hands with 3 card support which doesn't want to be on the 3 level unless partner wish to be there(sometimes based on knowing you have this side suit). Now to the conclusion, I would think as other suggested that if you don't want to be at the 3 level, you got to show the fit immediately rather then show the side suit.

I second this. You might not agree with everything they write but it is a very useful read and will almost certainly improve your game if you take in the core concepts. I read this book a while ago, and it is be part of the reason I asked this question, this is because maybe the biggest point in this book is support with support as soon as possible, which stand in contrast to the way many people use the transfers to show a side suit before they support.

Hi everyone, One of the advantages of playing transfers over partner's overcall is the ability to show a new suit and later support partner's suit, however delaying support in competitive is many time a bad idea. Lets say the bidding is 1C-1S-P-? You have a diamond suit and spade support, bidding 2C might help partner on a lead and maybe some bidding decision, but on the other hand it will make it much easier for opener to reenter the bidding. So when should you delay support and when should you just support partner ?

I've voted for 1H, but 2H at this vul is not so bad, the 2 aces and the overall strengh doesnt bother me much, the 3 spades is probebly the only real resson I'd go for the 1H rather then 2H.

open 3H which show the true nature and offensive power of this hand and avoid this problem.

I agree that at some point it stops being a psych and stat being a system, however Atleast where I play systems are agreed on most bids, there are only few limitations, so I don't see any problem with it. I dont see the problem with destructive bidding, I think its a very important part of bidding.

4♣ The singlton A is not a problem here.

You should usually sk for aces when you know that you have the strengh for slam, but want to make sure you do not miss 2 key cards, Its also nice to know that the suits are controled but I think the main problem here is not with the controled missing but with the north hand not stong enough to force slam (unless missing 2 key cards) it should instead suggest slam and check if partner is also interested, this is usually done by cue bidding, so on 3NT you should be something like 4C, south will show its cue bid but will not show extra and the bidding should not go above 5D

The bidding looks fine to me until the 4H, I don't understand this bid. after 4D I would continue 4S-5C-5D-P 4S - cue bid doesn't show extra 5C - cue bid 5D- no extras to bid above game P - already showed my extras, but I dont have enough to bid the slam if partner is minimum.

I see that some suggests bidding 3NT over 2H-3H, I wonder if we shouldnt look for slam, even grand slam is possible if partner has something like AKQX of ♥ and A of ♣, and not less important partner knows our shape, he knows we got good ♦ suit and will know that A of ♣ is important, and AK ♥ are important but QJ♣ or QJ♠ are not important. 3S could be better as partner can still offer 3NT by himself over 3S.

Thanks for all the responses, I like best to bid 3S on the first round. I didn't do it because I was too afraid of missing a game especially since I was playing with a passive partner but I guess even with her it was the best call.

Edit: I forgot to say, it was mp scoring Hi everyone, I held ♠AKJ8742 ♥Q ♦6 ♣Q974 Vul against not RHO opened 1H, I bid 1S, LHO bid 2NT fit inv+, partner passed and opener bid 4H. Should I bid anything, was 1S correct?

With 5♠4♦ hands, no matter how strong there is no real need for bidding 2♦, you know of 8 spade fit. So it more logical to use it for 5♦4♠, now with this distribution and GF you will begin with 2♦ over 1♠, so it cant be GF, it also cant be too weak since you would have bid 2S, so it should be somewhere in between and should therefore be constructive but not forcing.
