Our Opponents needed exactly 3 bids to find this laydown grand. System: Blue Club 1♣ = 17+ 2♦ = 6 controls 7 NT = I can count 13 tricks (8 ♦ + 3 Aces + 2 Kings. Would you have found this one with your favorite partner at the table of a tourney?

What about double (with EQUAL-LEVEL-CONVERSION)?
-
Michaels shows a) below opening-strength OR b) 16+ HCP imho.

[hv=pc=n&s=skq64haqd8542ckj3&n=saj832h75d7caqt62]133|200[/hv] Do you have a tool to find the double-fit in the blacks after 1NT OR 1♦(playing weak NT)? Would you with your favorite Partner find this 100% slam?

Many ways to play and defend this hand
xx1943 replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
OK; I learned a lot about this nice feature in the BBO-software using GIB PLAY and NEXT Buttons. I didn't know this feature before. But I understand many looks and few replies. I posted this hand in the hope to have a discussion the hand could be played. I found it very interesting, that West must not lead ♥10 and more interesting to see what happened, if West plays ♥9 instaed of small to trick #1. In the end there are a lot of nice situations concerning trumps and/or endplay in spades. Now I have 2 questions: 1) How do you play the hand, if you cannot see the E_W-cards, after the "normal" lead of ♦Q? 2) Why is the hand advertised in the BBO-news? Who did this for what reason? Many thanks for answers Al -
Many ways to play and defend this hand

@Whereeagles. Nice tool that GIB-button. But how the defense will continue to beat declarer? -

I got 100% for making 4♥ against terrible defense by the Gibs. I'm wondering, if you can make 4♥ against perfect defense. Another question: What is the best plan to play after lead of ♦Q. Is there more than the 50% chance (Playing West for ♠A)?
-
You are rite, Pavlicek's tool is great, but the odds for at least 4 tricks with double finesse are 76% and with banging down A and K are 69,44% Spade double finesse is the correct play imho.

The ♦9 is alerted as coded 9/10.[/hv] Sure, 4 hearts is the better contract and partner is to blame for his bidding. But you should concentrate making this 3NT. Partner will not like your complaints about his bidding if you lose a makeable contract. You count 5 sure tricks and expect 2 more from Clubs after the Ace is out. Where (hearts or spades) do you look for the missing 2 tricks? If you develop hearts, how do you handle the suit? If you develop spades, how do you handle the suit? What are the odds to win this contract?

[hv=pc=n&s=shk32dac2&w=sjthajtdc&n=sa2hq54dc&e=s3h6d32cj]399|300[/hv] South plays in 6NT and leads with 8 tricks in the bag Diamond A as squeeze-card. Declarer makes 4 of the last 5 tricks in this 5-card ending by means of a squeeze without count. Does anyone know the name of this squeeze? Ty for your answers Al

yes trumps were 4=0 and you need the squeeze this was the complete hand: [hv=pc=n&s=sak82haj7dak2cak4&w=shkq65d87643cjt85&n=sqt975h2dqtcq9762&e=sj643hq9843dj95c3]399|300[/hv]

The grand has more than 75%. clubs 3-2 East single 10 or J of clubs heart-club squeeze against either opponent, who holds the heart honors and 4 clubs.

Do you have a method showing partner you hold a 5-carder? The book says "play the original 4th best". But can partner read the 8 as 4th best?

But it is not easy to bid. Which contract do you reach with your favorite partner? You make your contract against any lead if spades are and hearts 3=2. The plan is to draw 2 rounds of trumps and ruff a heart high. ♠A is the entry to the long hearts. The 5th trump is the reentry to your hand to enjoy ♦KQ. Do you see any way to make 6 or 7 spade against 4=1 distribution in one of the major suits? This is the traveller. Only 5 out of 35 declarer made 13 tricks in spades. Here is the screenshot. I don't know, how long the link is valid.

Do you find the Moysian fit?
xx1943 replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Discard clubs to the 2nd and 3rd round of hearts and you'll overcome a spade 4==2 distribution without tears. -

After 1♥ pass 1♠ 4th hand has a lot of possibilities to describe his hand but after 2♦ pass 4♠ he has to make a critical decision without knowing anything about partners or RHOs hand. We had in the last years many very good results and no desaster at all using flannery. The biggest desaster was when I forgot the convention and raised preemptitive to 5♦ LOL
-
100% agree. Flannery has it merits either as preempt or attempt to score game: 2♦ pass 4♠ and fourth hand has a decent hand and no idea who can win which contract. Declarers hand is completely unknown. The decribed opening hand will be tabled.
-
We play Flannery since many year and never missed the weak 2♦, but got a lot of great results by the flannery convention. I'm wondering why this is used so rarely. For those, who don't even know the convention: Here a link to BridgeGuys. Here an example of a hand, where we found a nice 4♠ in a 4==4-fit with only 20HCP. I admit I was lucky in partner finding with no lost values in the heart-suit. For those, who don't like movies here the pictures: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ir0AlvDQU_s/UQ6DLy7wT_I/AAAAAAAAK6E/ZWIenBa1ytg/s1600/triumph+of+flannery.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Uh72u1sln2g/UQ6DMbeNdeI/AAAAAAAAK6I/Sza45X26Zmc/s1600/triumph+of+flannery+traveller.jpg

Hi Phil, why do you think it is in the wrong forum? It is an easy problem in theory imho. The difficulty is to think of this bad distribution at the table. I'm very ashamed because I misplayed the hand, when it came up. Here is the link to the original hand. This problem is very useful for beginners in 2 ways 1) To recognize such a situation. You must have seen such things to be aware of. 2) To learn the necessity to care for very bad distributions, if you are in a good contract. It happens so often, that you forget the precautions, if you are euphoric about the nicely bidden contract. Regards Al

http://www.albrecht-hollstein.de/Bilder/Almispalyed7Dia-prob.jpg Phil told us how to win this grand with 97,6% 1) Ruff a spade in trick 2 is a precaution against hearts 5-0 2) A round of diamonds revails the situation. a) If diamonds are 5==0, hearts must be 3=2, because you have no trumps to ruff even 1 heart. Cash the other high trump in dummy. Go back to your hand with the Q, pull all trumps and test the heartsThe spade ruff was not necessary, but didn't hurt. b) If diamonds are not 5==0, overtake the last diamond in your hand and pull 1 or 2 more rounds of diamonds (just to exhaust opps of trumps). You have 2 or 1 trumps left to cater vor hearts 4==1 or 5==0.
