North is the type of player that I abhor. He's only concerned with his own hand, blithely ignoring the fact he has a partner sitting opposite who, very likely,is holding a 'busted flush' People like North are as big a pest at the bridge table as the greenfly are in the garden(!) I would pass just to "teach partner a lesson "

The OP said that a diamond was played on a heart trick i.e.failure to follow suit. Unless the player had no more hearts this constitutes a revoke and is subject to penalty.
-
The TD was quite right. The Laws of Bridge are quite clear on this. Dummy shall not participate in any part of the play. But an infringemnt has taken place i.e a revoke which is subject to penalty irrespective of dummy calling the TD.

I dont agree with North's 1NT response. With 11 hcp his bid should have been 2NT which South would raise to 3NT

On my profile I make it very clear that I will not entertain any invite from a player whose profile is 'anaemic' It surely doesn't take long to provide some basic information about your playing system(!)

You are dealt a solid 9 card minor suit. Which bid is best ? A "Gambling" 3NT or 5 of the minor? And does it make any difference at MP or IMPS? I personally prefer to bid the minor as it makes it almost impossible for opponents to compete.

My acute sense of danger tells me to pass. West has not yet bid and for me that means a red light is flashing. West could have huge strength and any overcall by South is highly dangerous and could result in a huge doubled penalty. There is a time and a place for taking risks but not here. If West is weak and also passes, trust partner to keep the bidding open with a takeout double.

Who should bid Spades?
PhilG007 replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is a no brainer. NORTH should bid the spades first and ask his partner for preference. -

A great expert once said "If you're not going down 800+ two or three times a week, then you're not bidding enough!" :)

The "obvious" bid is the unusual 2NT. But not everyone uses or likes this bid. If so,what is the alternative?

Pick an opening lead?
PhilG007 replied to Kaitlyn S's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I dislike leading away from unsupported honors when defending suit contracts so it has to be a trump lead. If partner does have a trump honor its dead in the water anyway plus the trump lead will cut down dummy's ruffing power. -
How do you teach young beginners?
PhilG007 replied to micsfyuen's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I recall that Ron Klinger wrote a book entitled "Teach your child Bridge" This could be a great handbook for teachers -
I've noticed that certain tournaments on BBO are entry selective. IMHO this is unacceptable as it suggests that a "clique" culture exists on this site as well as exclusivity. Bridge is supposed to be a game for everyone so why are BBO allowing private tournaments on a universal website (?)

A straightforward take out double. Anything else..the thumbscrews(!) ;)

Why do opps always bid my suit?
PhilG007 replied to Tramticket's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I've lost count of the number of times a "wheel came off" The script was doctored and partner placing me with something completely different. I recall it was something to do with being on different wavelengths  Bridge can be a cruel game sometimes  -

So you still intend to bid 2♠ despite a stack of them being announced on your right(?) On thy head be it (!) -
Why do opps always bid my suit?
PhilG007 replied to Tramticket's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would never bid the enemy suit in a natural sense. Overcalls are often dicey. THIS one, when you KNOW an opponent is strong in your trump suit is just bizarre. It's one thing to have the misfortune to skid off the road;quite another to accelerate deliberately into a tree(!) Bidding opponents suit should only ever be used in a conventional sense, and then again only in an established partnership after discussion and agreement. On the hand and bidding given, all you can do is pass and wait developments. Who knows, your spades could prove to be opponents nemesis :P -
Depending on the quality of the diamond suit I would open either 2♦ or 3♦ Holding♦AQxxxxxx I would open 2♦ However with something like ♦KQ10985432 I would be more inclined to open 3♦As always it is the intermediate cards that sway the balance. The vulnerability would also have an influence on my decision.

Strong hand over partner's preempt
PhilG007 replied to nugatory's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1) Pass Alarm bells always ring for me when partner bids my singleton 2) 2NT showing opening points and at least one spade stopper -
There is no such thing as an "agreed hesitation" The Laws are quite clear that the only info allowed between partners shall be through legitimate bids and card play. Anything else is illegal and subject to penalty.
