  1. Thanks for those answers, again a couple of things popped into my delecate little brain. a) What is the incentive of pay to play for players? :) Is there any masterpoint scheme or anything of that nature that as a director i need to become a part of to access, or is it generated by BBO? c) If there are some schemes available is it in the interests of me as a director, you as an organisation or the player base to take one of the options that will benefit BBO and players more. Most of the info im interested in is to generate interest by the players, and to help BBO remain a free haven for players to come and enjoy themselves. So anything that has been published on the issue or has been discussed and is posted anywhere would be great. If there are any rules or regulations that the BBO body would like directors to adhere to or at least consider when making decisions as to the validity of their tournaments i would be very interested in those also. Kindest Regards.
  2. I am just enquiring of others, this topic has probably already been broached by others, if you can direct me to where that would be great, if there isnt then here are my questions. 1) if you runa tournament of pay to play, who gets the money from that? 2) if some is given over to BBO and some to the director, how do you set up an account to recieve it, and can we give the money take or part there of back to the players? 3) if all monies go to the BBO what is the incentive of the players? (beside supporting this great organisation of course) 4) Is there any benefit to directors to run these over others? 5) Does the BBO staff and owners prefer us to run pay to play? im sure there are other points i havnt thought of yet and will add them if there is no other place to look for answers. thanks for your time
  3. I will rip this X and bid 4NT you want partner to play it if you can get them to and you have 2 suits, so give them the choice, if you dont like what they bid then you can always correct.
  4. Trpltrbl is right about your line of pitching a CLUB with the third heart. and his line is also the only one i can see to make this contract.
  5. I would swing the JD the reason is is that if declarer has the KQXX then the suit is going to rack up anyway, you dont have any of the pips and this could be one of a couple of entrys that declarer has, it elimates one of there entries for the possible double club finesse, if your partner has spade cards they will best be used as a entry restriction you dont want to be giving the opps any time to work out the count of the hand while they still have ample communication.
  6. But isnt the reason for transfers more so that the known hand the hand with values is getting the lead upto them? i mean if you have a non forcing hand and just want to play in 2H/S then the NT hand comes down and then the defense is in a better position to know what to lead through? I understand the system you are offering, but most of that is just hand evaluation anyway, if you are going to go down in an invitational hand then so be it, you have at least an 8 card fit when pard bids 3H so you have a 6 / 2 fit at the least, i like my chance, sorry its a well thought out system but too much work with no percievable gain.
  7. If people want to Cheat then they are going to find a way. The problems with Cheaters is that they will get the defense right and usually get to the right contract. As for Declarer play well in tournies they are only going to get this right if there are three of them and well good luck to them. If people need to resort to cheating for an online game well there is something to be said for the people that do it arent there. Directors and players in the main club have options to bar kabitzers so that can cut down some, as for the others well they arent worth peoples time, as they get discovered it will get around and people just wont let them play... If you focus to much on the cheating you are going to become to paranoid when someone takes an anti percentage line, and that is just not right. Just play bridge you know your not cheating so why should you care if someone else is. One thing that arises from this is that people dont like to get bad results and some people when they get them when someone has found a great lead or play will say they must have cheated. things get out of hand when you start questioning someones line bidding or def, beginners luck out sometimes and pull the wrong card which is the right one, and better players have an inspired moment and try something... For my 2 cents people try to work out how to stop cheating when you really cant and when you are to focused on it then you see cheaters more often then there really are. ;)
  8. Secrets of Bridge... for beginners Understanding Bridge Comprehending Bridge Grasping Bridge sorry i like strange words for this sort of thing. there were a few other more obscure words i thought a bout using but eh... LOL.:(
  9. Why would you want to make bridge fair? I think that as long as the deals are random then its all good. You could go into your local club and have to defend all the hands so why should it be any different on BBO, also if you are rotating directions in tournaments then you could just be missing all the nice ones. Bide your time and wait your turn, you will get to play some eventually.
  10. well thats a bit of a pity Uday. thanks for the info... puts a tear in my eye though. Ah well gives me something to think about then...
  11. Hi all. i Am going to run a tournament sometime in the next couple of weeks. its going to be a huge endeavour and i am going to need lots of help directing it. The format of it will be a: Boards: 120 rounds: 12 so 10 boards per round Minutes: 7 mins per board so 1hr 10 mins per round Style: imps Type: survivor 50% cut Basically this tournament will be an elimination. I dont know if it can be set up as such but it will be a qualifying 4 rounds or 3 depending. and then 1/2 the field will be eliminated till we have one winner. i will be offering up 512 places. you wil qualify for 4 rounds. then then fields will be halved till there are 4 pairs left and then 2 rounds of finals. till someone wins. this is alot of boards. the way it will be run will be have the matches in one sitting with an hour break after the first cut, and then a 6 hour break after the first 6 rounds. this is just a proposal to see if as a group we can get some logisitcs on this. the reason is is that we will need a schedule of directors ( you might need an army of them) and then advertise advertis advertis.) it would be nice to see how it goes. So this is just a proposal to see what people think. This will be a whole weekend. the gaps in time can be how ever. So any comments any views on this.
  12. Here is my opinion on this matter... (take it as you will)... online bridge is alot different from RL bridge(unless your playing behind screnes) So as such, the contract should be alterted to 3D* for all concerned not just N/S. Its simply someone has made an infraction. it doesnt matter how badly they played this hand in 3H they should be playing in 3D*. They might have been thinking we should be playing in 3D* and got distracted at the play. The reason this is is that 1) when you want to know about a bid you can click on the call you want clarification on 2) you can send a message to the opponents and get the clarification. The thing is, is that the person making the bid should be explaining and since that online you can do that and not give your partner any unauthorised information, this is the way it should be done and then there will be less missleading explanations and a better enviroment from which players can base there bids and directors can make their rulings. Just my 2 cents on the topic.
  13. It is very easy. How often are you distracted in real world and bid the wrong thing happened? its the same with BBO click the wrong thing think the wrong then then you open the wrong thing. I don't mean to be rude here Inquiry but if you slam try after a weak opening then you have no trust in partner or you have opened the wrong thing in the first place. also you are implying parter has values for game? which is absurd, once you open a weak hand you have relinquished all control of the auction. In its simplest let 4S stand no penalties. If it was a psyche then it went awry and they should be punished by the opps not the director. If it was a genuin mistake then they arent getting a good result anyway.
  14. i think that if you want to add the same criteria to the subs as you do the players then is should only be done on the HOSTS list as to who is allowed and who isnt. i dont think that the Co-Directors list should have any bearing. the reason is is that the co directors can be anyone they dont need to be a TD can be a friend. so i think that their list should not be use.
  15. do you mean like you cna give one pair aveage minus and one the correct score? if so then im in... i like to be able to do that... it allows you to punish someone for an infraction with out punishing the field.
  16. i would like to be able to copy text from my chat window.
  17. My Views on this differ according to the type of tournie. Some incentives might be the following as well. Paid play: restrict event to level type i.e. Novices/intermediates, intermediates/advanced, advanced/experts. experts/world class. That way the fields are broken up where players are playing against their own level. I think that if people want to reach up then thats fine but people fishing down is wrong. What you should be running is as the others have suggested a learning base for novice/intermediate players where they can play in the tournie they get a copy of their hands the auction and there play ( can be found online but should be separate from their general hands they have played) and then a list of what everyone else played in for each board so they can see what others are doing. Along with this there should be a panel of experts/worldclass who give a overview of what people should be bidding and why as well as a deep finesse analasys of each hand. I mean the reason i think all this is this is a great way to earn revenues and to better the players. Having stronger and more competent fields in the future should be the aim here. As for the other groupings there is only one fair format and that is an individual. you cant run any other format that would wouldnt be as abused. You can make them a relatively big event and offer cash incentives i.e. free entry to the next one for the top 16 players(pending on size of event of course) a cash prize to 1,2 3 and even send out a small plarque to the winner... now this is all just thrown out there becasue it all depends. it depends on the number of players and the amount to generate. one thing i know for sure i wouldnt pay to play in anything less than 28 boards.
  18. Thats not quite true. I was disconnected and then was back within 3 minutes. i had 8 minutes on the clock and 5 cards to play on the last board of the round. By the time i got back online the director had already subbed somoene into my seat and when i asked if i could be subbed back in he blatantly refused. He didnt even ask the sub if it was okay if i was subbed back in. I took great offense to this and still do. As for the sub issue i have found that if you have a co-director, not even a TD from out outstanding base of TD's but a friend or associate who you can get to go the leg work on requesting subs for your tournament that it does aleviate alot of the problems. Since i have been doing that i havnt had any sub problems with the tournies.
  19. Howdy, depending on the times of matches and how long they are i would be happy to help direct. Even if its just in a ruling capacity so look me up if your interested. you can contact me on BBO quite regularly. Regards Luke. Azzkikr to the players.
  20. I would like to express my appreciation for the minutes of the meetings, it is very informative and allows you to keep upto date with whats on the TD's mind. it is a great follow up to the forums. Thank you for all the effort that has been going into all the information. sorry to be fussy, was wondering if for the next meeting you might be able to just give a time its on for a certain country, I have a bust schedule (as im sure alot of you do) and when i log onto BBO my brain isnt usually functioning when i first log on, as BBO is my downtime to catch up with people. - lame excuse i know.
  21. Hi all. I dont think you should worry about those with bad connections if you are playing 2 or more boards. especillay if you are running 3 or more. The fact is people have the option to claim. I dont think this is utilised enough and find that alot of players wont accept claims because that players dont understand. this is the reason that time is wasted and that rounds take so long. If a hand is part the way through then just sit back and wait to see if there partner turns up. reason for this: if the player doesnt know whats been played then how can they be expected to get this hand right? they might as well take an average on the board if time runs out. I personally play quite fast, in a 2 board round its not uncommon for me to have about 6 mins on the board when finished. I find it rather annoying that when i come back after being dissoconnected to find my seat gone. It is the players in defense that force the issue of the sub i think that more weight should be given if their partners ask for a sub.
  22. 1. 2H, you have very little defense. i dont think you pard needs much to make 2H or one off in 2H but it seems values are spread equally. but even though you have 2 bullets you could have saved some problems by just overcalling 2H. might encourage the opps to ocmpetet to 3D. 2. just open 1D no point in jumping around if pard doesnt have any cards. 3. just bid 4S you r pard should move with any values(8/9+) so you shouldnt be concerned about missing slam.
  23. 1D opening, If partner has anythin resembling an hand they will bid. 5 count with a major pard should say something. if they have nothing you could struggle to make 3 Diamonds.
  24. Well first off Vul has some say in these auctions. 1) in the first Case Ace ask or Keycard in Diamonds. 2) in this Auction to me this comes accross as a T/O bid possible a two suiter. This shouldnt be natural. you have penalty options here an dyou dont know if you are going plus or not playing in 4NT.
  25. I agree. I would bid 5C the first time this has a two point effect. 1) you have a 9 card suit, you only want to play in that suit you have no defense. 2) you dont give the opps an opportunity to bid anythin at the four level making their decision much harder.
