  1. there is something i dont understand here about the UI, please tell me if i am wrong but why does my partner ask the range of nt if he is not going to bid? isn't this a kind of UI then for me? when i play bridge i only ask opps questions during the bidding if i am going to bid myself or else i wait till bidding is finished and before my lead i ask the range or whatever.... so for me i think there is UI, that my hand is biddable in any situation is another matter i would have prefered my partner had passed and i had given my bid which i would have done anyway
  2. hi; this alert topic is just what i wanted to ask the other day so was glad that it came up. the other day i entered a tournament where the host stating the rules of tournament had also added that no alerts above any 3 level bid and no alert for doubles which i found rather interesting. is this a new ruling ??? i always thought that doubles should be alerted unless they are penalty... my idea of alerting is any bid that would be understood by my p as different than the accepted definition of that bid in bridge language and even then if it has different meanings in different systems it should be alerted cant expect opps to know every system and modifications.. especially this alert or non alert business over doubles has made me curious can somebody enlighten me ...... and also can this rule be valid in certain countries and not in others i mean such rules should be universal ......
  3. i also hate table hoppers :-)) sadly there is not much to do about it :-( i mark them as impolite and send them a private message telling my feelings usually get an answer ''sorry, was bored , partner is not what he says he is ,etc...:-)) reprting them is not efficient i aggree wouldnt want to be in the yellow'place they would have a hard time cause there are too many table hoppers . just take the time to deal with it yourself: private messages maybe in time it will have some effect:-))
  4. hello, I dont think that there is an ethic problem here...psychic bids can never be an ethical issue its part of the game what actually bothered me was that a world class player used it in a bid against opponents who were beginners B) Let him psyche against world class players....... It's simply not fair against beginners who want to learn and improve their skills One shouldnt forget that everyone was a beginner too and how one feels when a stunt like that was pulled against you catching you unaware............ :(
  5. Hi everybody, I love Bridge and I am a big fan of BBO recommending it to everybody I know :P I like to play tournaments mostly because in the main bridge club you have the problem of players leaving the table (mostly in the middle of play) and you wait more than you play. But lately tournaments have changed drastically. There are the ''$ tournaments'' to which I have absolutely nothing against , I even understand the necessety for them perfectly it's just that I personally can't afford them (which is actually my problem B) ) There were many other tournaments that I could enter but the last couple of weeks something has changed  Tournaments : 1.restricted to private clubs 2. tournaments restricted to country(appear more and more) 3: tournaments restricted to language...... Bridge players all over the world; what are you doing??????? This beautifull game is universal........ If I wanted to play only with my countrymen I would go to my local clubs and I have 3 popular clubs in my city. Bridge online like BBO is a place where you can meet people all over the world get to know their systems(cause people from the same country often tend to play the same systems) also make new friendships which is a very important factor in today's world where love and tolerance and understanding is growing less and less. In short I would like to play in tournaments where I can meet people all over the world sharing the same passion and love for this immense game ;)
  6. I would be rather interested if it's not too much a bother for you <_< TY
  7. hi, J2nt is one of my favorite systems:showing a 4 card support and opening hand with any distribution. Here i think some modification is needed : I dont bid J2nt with a 4-5-2-2, or 4-5-3-1 hand. I bid my 5 card suit and become the captain of the bidding whereas with J2nt declerar is always the captain, why hide a 5 card suit so when I bid J2nt myhand will always mostly be a balanced 4-4-3-2 or 4-4-4-1 hand and if the opening bid is 1H then with the last mentioned hand I will bid 1S(may not want to loose a 4-4 S fit) (only and only if my 5 card suit is so poor mentioning then I use 2nt instead) The 3C response is 14+ with singleton or 17+ balanced hand in my system so my bid would be a 3D asking bid 3S response is 11-13 opening hand with a singleton so with 3nt I ask for my partner's singleton 3nt is a 6 card suit with no singleton now any bid from me is a singleton in my hand 4S respond is the lousiest hand possible so if I go on bidding it must be a hand interested for slam even with the worst opening hand if I bid it would be a singleton. I would like to hear ur views on this subject and widen my knowledge but also i think if you use j2nt u should also use 2/1 so ur 2level bid would be GF
  8. hi, The so called 'brown stickers' is a convention, a system you choose to play ; so is 'forcing pas' with actually opening hands (not allowed in many places also). Bridge has definite rules as how it is played but I dont think anybody and I stress the word 'anybody' should have the right to say which system you can play and which you cant. That just shows how narrow-minded we approach certain things:what I dont understand I dont want :-)))) I hope one day this barrier will be broken and we will just have more fun at this beautifull game adjusting our knowledge to different systems and open wider horizons.
  9. I also have been playing reverse drury for a long time and have lets say 80% encountered no drastic results :-)) have even profited from its use 3D response is a very defined hand: 4 card support 6-9 HCP and no singleton which gives the declarer a pretty good picture where to stop and what to do if opponents interfere also steals the 2 club bid from opps :-))) 3C has 2 meanings : either 6-9HCP with a singleton or 9-11HCP balanced so opener can again evaluate his hand either way with a min. opening the declarer bids 3 M or goes to game with a better opening or unbalanced hand .I use the 3 D ask for sing. only for slam trial where that singleton could be so useful that with a total of 26 HCP u could play it happened to me the other day AKxxx Qxxx xxx x KQx Axxxx AJxx Q10x 1S 3C 3D 3H and i happily went for a slam:-))) Also with 9+ to 11 HCP with singleton and again 4 card support I use splinter and 12+ hands with 4 card support are 2 NTJ responses. I think the whole trick here is the 4+card support (3card supports always go through forcing nt) and the hand evaluation how the 2 hands will fit. I am happy with these conventions and recommened them if played combined but being no expert I am also open to different suggestions :-))))
  10. hi, I've had the same complaints about tournament starting time being dragged out and about the clocked rounds which were never clocked so I sat in front of my PC for hours.... :-(( Want to know how I resolved this: by entering almost all tournaments possible when having ample time getting to know the reliable directors:-))) and there are a lot of them let me tell you (have an opportunity to thank them dearly here) and then I just registered to tournies directed by those directors:-)) Took me a lot of time to do this but know I am happily playing in those tournaments where everything goes by the book:-)) The important thing is just to get to know the directors that's all no need to stop playing in tournaments my dear friend:-))
  11. When I entered BBO some couple of years ago I had filled out the card rather properly... name, country..flag... (except the e-mail part which I found dangerous and still do) In short I filled out whatever there was to fill  Then something very funny and sad happenned: I was 70% denied entry to tables and found no partners in tournaments. First I thought well people dont know me yet.... Then one day I edited my profile nothing on it now but skill level(which is a rather useless thing have seen players whose names I know by now change them constantly to enter certain tournaments) Today Iam happily playing in tournaments and am accepted to tables and rather sad about it that it should happen this way cause I am rather proud of may name and country What a paradox  Wanted to tell this only so some could understand one of the reasons people stay incognito one musnt asume always that there are some devious reasons behind it
  12. I've been using jacoby 2nt for years now rather effectively and always thought it as a unvariable standard convention like bergen, reverse bergen, forcing nt,etc..... This is how I play it: 1 M -2 NT ?: 3 C.....14+ with singleton or any 17-19 balanced hand 3D......5/5 ,5/4 hand or a hand that wantd to know more about P distribution Partner's 3 H shows dbl. clubs, 3S dbl.D and so forth where you can even later find out the exact cards of that dbl. 3H......any void 3S......min.hand with singleton 3NT....14+ 6 card suit no sing. 4C......control in this suit min.hand 13-14 4D......same 4H.......same 4S.......lousy hand sign-off And i haven't found a single person who played it like that so I really think of taking it out of my profile card and that brings me to the topic of how much to write on those cards and then assume that whats written on mine or partners card will be understood equally like an international language lol some cards have just 2/1 written so I use forcing nt and get a grandious PASS as response ????????partner??????? forcing nt I wail...... response; oh I play 2/1 but no forcing nt!!!!!! Well this was just the fun part..... What I really would like to know is how you use jacoby 2nt how it is mostly used by bbo players so that I can adapt myself
  13. dummy or mort a beautifull definition for that player...... can see, hear, feel (lol) but not TALK that's how it schould be in all cases......
  14. Well lol and lol now it has come down to differentiate between tactical bids and psychic ones.......... tell me then is this bid tactical or psychic: 1D-P-1H-P 2H-P-3NT-P YOU HAVE TO LEAD FROM Kx-Kxxx-J-KQxxxx ????????? unless you lead a heart the contract is cold because your RHO is void in hearts!!!!and dummy has only the ace once they knock out your spade K the contract is home.
  15. Thank you Ben for the information about restricted tournaments especially the ''enemy'' part found that always curious :-)))) BUT about the false carding during play and psychic bids.... I dont think we can lump them into same category. Is standard procedure for one of the opps with the stronger hand to false card and the weak opp not to do so. An experienced declarer usually sees through that and actually no one is decieved. 3rd seay openings??? well may be a gray zone but most systems define them opps can ask if there is a tendency to open weak in 3rd.seat can't they so not a gray zone actually....... nilbes
  16. These last couple of months I have seen more and more restricted tournaments.Either they are private clubs or to certain skill levels, countries, languages, systems and whatever you can think of........ This gives a very limited choice of tournaments to players like me who like to play tournaments dont belong to many of those clubs and have a limited time to play. Well this may actually be another discussion topic but what I really want to emphasize is the use of psychic in tournaments. Why not restrict that???? Here you are usually with a partner you play the first time with and the opps. use a psychic bid. till you know what!s going on you are in the middle of the hand and its too late :-))) One can arguee that these bids also fool the partner of the bidder but what the heck. I just don't like it. Bridge is such a wonderfull game with so many conventions and systems from which you can bid your hand and find the optimum contract why go and use psychic????? What kind of satisfaction does it give to the user of it???? I am really puzzled there..... Would like your opinions about it, how you deal with them and if these bids should be banned from tournaments? In fact in many official tournaments they are and so the better.....
  17. I am very much in favor of bergen raises and have rarely been in a bad spot as long as you dont miuse it. for example partner opens a major: with a 4 card support but 4333 flat and weak hand I prefer 1 nt then supprt major in unfav.vulnerability otherwise with unbalanced hand my bid is a jump p should know that i have no defense in case he has a strong hand and wants to dbl. opps.bergen is a part of the rule of total tricks so its helpfull to know how far to bid when to stop and when to dbl. opps
  18. I am against the lehmann rating system too, that'S why I have not played at other sites and that's why I love BBO. But then there comes MY problem not knowing many players and not having a constant partner I frequently enter tournaments choosing my partners from their skill level and what is written on their profiles.....and what a dissapointment :( I really dont know why people write all those things on their profiles where they dont have the slightest idea of how those systems function and their skill levels are rarely what's been stated Would anybody have a solution for that? I am really getting desperate..........
