  1. Here are a couple of hands where my partner and I went wrong at the Brighton Swiss Pairs (7 board rounds MPs scoring, converted to VPs on the weekend. Would appreciate input as to where we went wrong/ who could have done more. Hand 1 [hv=pc=n&s=s54hkd87642cj9876&w=sqt632hj9432dakc2&n=sk97ht8dt5cakqt54&e=saj8haq765dqj93c3&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=1s2c3c(3c%20support%20limit%2B)4cp(no%20interest%20in%20game)p4spp5cp(Forcing)pdppp]399|300[/hv] I would probably have bid 5♣immediately as S but this is the auction you're given. I was West and had real problems imagining a hand where I avoid losing fewer than 2 tricks in ♥+♠ combined. Hand 2 [hv=pc=n&s=st3h864dt942ckj83&w=skqj76ha32dj3c542&n=sa2hkqjt97da65cq6&e=s9854h5dkq87cat97&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=1sd2n(4c%20support%20Limit%2B)p3c(any%20minimum)3hp(inv%20opposite%20minimum)p3sppp]399|300[/hv] maybe 4♠ is a little lucky to make but you definitely want to be there. Missing it was worth 30% (problem is partially solved by passing as West but it is your style to open these hands  )
  2. I know the hand so I'll put my answer in spoilers but our auction produced quite a heated post mortem from EW. Would appreciate input as to what you would bid with South's hand:
  3. but might you not double with the first hand in the hope of getting to 3n (esp at MPs)?
  4. I don't know how to quote on mobile, but I was referring to the pass of 3Hx as pushy. Agree that the neg x is pretty normal. The reason I posted the hand is that I was west and passed fairly quickly thinking it pretty obvious, but give partner the Qc and his bid will be the same and we'll still be chalking up 0%!
  5. Both decisions are a little pushy IMO and compounded into a cold 0. ATB: [hv=pc=n&s=s42hakt432d5432c2&w=skt85hj65daq6c943&n=sqj93hq98dkj8cqj5&e=sa76h7dt97cakt876&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=1c2hd3hdppp]399|300[/hv] Scoring is MPs. System is 2/1 Better minor. 1st X = negative 2nd X = I want to bid, I dont have 4S
  6. Do you not play that 3n demands a cue?
  7. Somewhere between 55 and 60% no? Excellent is probably an overbid but they bid it at the other table :(
  8. IMPs, Swiss Teams 7 board matches converted to VPs [hv=pc=n&s=sqj432hakjt32d2c2&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1hp2c(2%2B%20balanced%20GF%20or%20nat%20GF)p2s(Does%20not%20promise%20extras)p3sp]133|200[/hv] Your options are 3N as a serious slam try or a non serious Q at the 4 level (or I guess you could sign off  ) Unfortunately you dont know whether partner is balanced or has a GF hand with a club suit. Bidding 4S over 2S would have shown a good club suit, spades and no controls in the red suits I chose to make non serious slam try figuring despite my undisclosed length I only had 1 KC. I was a little worried partner might overvalue cards in the minors (that weren't aces). Thoughts?
  9. This hand came up on in a Swiss teams game yesterday. IMP Scoring, 7 board matches converted to VPs. You're near the top in a weak field. Opposition are reasonable. [hv=pc=n&w=saq98hk2dak2ckjt9&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=pp3h]133|200[/hv] what's your choice. If you choose to dbl when would you bid 3N and if you bid 3N when would you double?
  10. [hv=pc=n&w=sk94hkt92dqjt72c6&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=1cd]133|200[/hv] MPs - Club night Figuring I had one bid for my hand I thought the hand was worth a double. I appreciate it was v light and I was concerned that I had no quick tricks.
  11. I think this one is genuinely tough. [hv=pc=n&s=skq2haqt98d32c432&w=s3h765432dqj4c765&n=s54hkjdak5cakqj98&e=sajt9876hdt9876ct&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=2np3dd(I'm%20crazy%20...)p3sdppp]399|300[/hv] ATB for +200 when 6n is lay down
  12. So 2n containing the 4c raise isn't a common as I thought it was. Post mortem discussion centred around the fact that 2n should be 95% forcing, which seems sensible given the agreements. In any case the main reason for the bad score was not so much that we failed to bid game but that we failed to play in hearts
  13. [hv=pc=n&n=skjtht832dtcjt832&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1dp1hp2np]133|200[/hv] Scoring is MP's, you're playing with a semi-regular partner. You havent discussed whether 2n can contain a 4c♥ raise. It seems pretty normal to include that so assume that it can. What do you bid? Do you have a good way of showing a 4c 18-19 balanced raise?
  14. Glad to see people agree with the action I took, will just chalk it up to bad luck and move on
  15. A hand from the recent BBO-JEC match. Made several errors but was particularly curious about this hand: [hv=pc=n&e=s432hq82d32cakqt8&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=p1cp1hp1sp1np2np3npp]133|200[/hv] Would you double for the club lead? (NB just realized the vuln. is wrong. It's all red)
  16. Sorry for the delay, I'm free and certainly interested. Thanks
  17. [hv=pc=n&s=sj6543hkj765dq2cq&w=sakthat8dk43ca872&n=sq2h43daj9876ck43&e=s987hq92dt5cjt965&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1sd2dp2hppp]399|300[/hv] South deals, North doesnt realize this and puts the stop card on the table and reaches for his bidding cards. He gets informed that it is not his bid before putting any cards on the table. The director is called and informs the players that there is no penalty. South then opens this monstrosity and NS end up in 2H+1 for a very good score Has there been any use of UI? South can be fairly sure that N was intending to preempt (much more likely than a strong bid) and as such doesnt need to fear partner game forcing on a total misfit PS South claims he would always open that hand and is not a beginner
  18. [hv=pc=n&e=sq432hadjca965432&d=w&v=n&b=12&a=pp1cd1d1h1s4hpp]133|200[/hv] MPs 2/1. Do you agree with 1♠? Are you bidding 5♣
  19. [hv=pc=n&w=sh432dak5432ckj32&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=1sp]133|200[/hv] playing 2/1 with a good pick up partner, MPs. I bid 2d at the table, have i lost my mind? I figured that it will help us find the best strain and if partner has a c or d fit the hand is huge. Even if partner's hand is awful there will probably be some play for 3n if partner has the Q♦
  20. I might be wrong here but I think that some people play 5N(or equiv) after denying the queen as the strongest possible grand invitation
  21. [hv=d=w&v=0&b=8&a=1hp3h(4+%21h%20fewer%20than%207p)dp]133|100[/hv] [hv=pc=n&n=sq5hk42dt652ct986]133|100[/hv] Unless I can magic 9 top tricks from somewhere 3NT doesnt look like it's going to make which IMO leaves 4m and pass. Do you agree? Which would you choose? IMPS, opposition seem good
  22. have a look at the spoiler in the OP According to the hand records the only slam that makes is 6!S by W. Of course the best result is passing 2Hx which one table did for -6 and 15.6 imps. Even 3N was worth 7.2 with lots of people going off in slams. 3/16 pairs even played in grand :D
  23. Do you not think your hand is going to mesh well with partners? He probably doesnt have much in hearts and you really dont need much to make 6N!
  24. I got dealt possibly the best hand I've ever received today and was wondering how the bidding should go ♠AK ♥AK ♦AKQxx ♣AJ9x [hv=d=n&v=e&b=9&a=pp2hdp2sp]133|100[/hv] What do you bid and how many? NB This was the very first board playing with a pick up partner where system discussion went as far as basic ACOL with 3 weak 2's (not my first choice of system :) )
