BBO forum, Playing west I held: S. Q986 H. KT82 D. T9 C. A75 the bidding went: N E S W 1C 1D P ? Partner is an over call so I assume diamonds are real and I chose to bid 1NT showing <10 and a club stopper. the bidding should have gone: N E S W 1C X P ? We jump bid only with 10+ points over a double so I would still bid 1NT but I could show the 4 card hearts or spades. Partner then bids 2D showing the "Big Double" with diamonds. What I bid now depends on whether I first chose to bid 1NT or one of the majors. I realize 3NT is probably for sure but slam may be there. Any suggestions. Jerry D.

BBO forum, Our point range for weak 2's is 5-10. This is fairly standard in the US(2/1). Jerry D.

BBO forum, Playing Ogust our partnership agreement is a bad hand is < 9 points and a bad suit doesn't contain 3 of the 5 honors. The bidding goes: 2H P 2NT P 3C Showing a bad hand and a bad suit. North alerts and west asks for an explanation. Does it have to be as specific as my definition of our agreement? Jerry D.

Make a hand layout

Thanks I see how to do it. Jerry D. -
Bidding Question
jerdonald replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
BBO forum, Steve2005 thanks for the reply. I know 4th suit forcing and exclusion Blackwood but how do we continue the bidding from this point? Jerry D. -
BBO forum, Couldn't figure how to make the hand layout at the top of my post so I'll do it this way. My hand as west: S KJ65 H 63 D KQ64 C A72 Partner's hand: A AQT74 H AKQ9854 D. C Q Bidding: W N E S 1D P 1H P 1S P ? What now? 4NT with a void is usually out, 3 or 4D might tend to show a big hand with hearts and diamonds, a jump to 3S might work to start on the way to small or large slam. Any suggestions? Jerry D.

BBO forum, How do I make the hand layout at the top of a post? Jerry D.

BBO forum, The OPS at this table were relatively new players and no one was vision impaired. Because I didn't know if it was an infraction and because they were inexperienced I was hesitant to call attention to the action. I started this post to find out what the directors here thought. So far it seems that it may or may not be an infraction depending on the situation. Does that make it director's discretion? Jerry D.

BBO forum, Today the OPS got the bid and the opening lead was made. After the dummy's hand was tabled the dummy counted the number of cards in one of the suits out loud. It was a 6 card suit that was not trump. Seems like this was UI to the declarer. Is it legal? Jerry D.

Quantitative or not
jerdonald replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Alchemist, Thanks for the reply. So how does responder explore for a slam in hearts with this sequence? Jerry D. -
BBO forum, As south I had this auction today. S W N E 1NT P 2D P 2H P 4NT P 5D P P!! Partner said he intended the 4NT to be quantitative. Why would he bother transferring me to hearts first? How do I distinguish his 4NT from ace asking. Jerry D.

Asking for Kings
jerdonald replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Vampyr, Thanks for the reply. In this case I just bid 6H rather than bidding the correct 6S. If we don't play keycard what other methods are available to safely show kings when hearts is the trump suit. Jerry D. -
BBO forum, Had a bidding problem where we didn't have a partnership agreement. I opened 1NT and partner transferred me to hearts and then bid 4NT which is standard Blackwood. I bid 5D showing 1 ace and partner bid 5NT. I have 3 kings so my response should be 6 spades but now partner will be forced to bid 6NT or 7 hearts. I had the bare 15 points and only 2 hearts. I know "trust your partner" but also there are different ways to show kings when hearts are the trump suit. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation? Jerry D.

BBO forum, According to the "ACBL Alert Regulations" most bids above 3NT are not alertable but there is no mention of splinter bids. Partner opens one of a major and you bid 4 diamonds showing support for the major, a possible game going hand and a shortness in diamonds. Does the 4 diamond bid have to be alerted? Jerry D.
-
BBO forum, If my partner or I open 2 diamonds(none of the standard conventions) and the responder bids 2 Spades it's a transfer to 2NT. When this sequence occurs we alert "transfer". Should we be alerting "transfer to no trump"? Jerry D.

BBO forum, Ok I see how these laws address this situation. The defender had only exposed her cards for a short period of time but they were both visible for anyone at the table. If the director was called and her partner said she didn't quite see the cards how should the director rule? Jerry D.

BBO forum, Playing declarer in a NT contract this week I was leading the second last trick. I led the 13th club as kind of a squeeze card and my LHO assumed I would lead one of her suits and exposed her 2 remaining cards. They were the spade ace and the heart king. She immediately pulled her cards back and I didn't call the director. My mistake. On the board were 2 spade spot cards. The king of spades and the queen of hearts had not been played yet. Her partner certainly has UI and, depending on what penalty card is played, will know what suit to save. My question is since both exposed cards are major penalty cards who decides which card she has to play on my club lead. Jerry D.

Mbodell, We play that 3NT by the opener would show 15-18 balanced. With 6 losers and no singleton my hand doesn't look good enough for slam unless partner has 3 aces. Four clubs would be Gerber at this point(following a NT bid by partner) and no matter what partner bids I would have the option of bidding on or stopping at 4 or 5 Hearts. I don't play 1430 with this partner. This whole sequence would be much simpler if I had a void or singleton so I could bid a splinter and let the opener take over. Jerry D.

BBO forum, Thanks for all the replies. The opener is relatively new to bridge(a couple of years) and Jacoby 2NT hasn't come up very often. As Lamford speculated this convention is mostly "undiscussed" so the opener probably didn't know what 3NT was supposed to show. The confusion in this bidding sequence is our fault for not knowing all the partnership agreements. I really just wanted to know about the ruling. According to the hand out sheet it makes 3NT or 5 Hearts. Jerry D.
-
zasanya, Opener's 3NT bid over a Jacoby 2NT should show 15-18 balanced but in this case the opener didn't recognize the Jacoby 2NT. Opener thought it just showed points. Jerry D.
-
BBO forum, The director never looked at my hand however it was: S. K964 H. AQJ8 D. 64 C. KJ2 The hand made the 3NT. Jerry D.
-
BBO forum, Today my partner opened 1 heart and I bid 2NT(Jacoby). Partner didn't alert and bid 3NT. I corrected to 4 hearts and the director was called by the OPS. The director said we had to play at 3NT but he couldn't site the ACBL law that dictated this decision. Was he right and what is the law? Thanks for any reply. Jerry D.

BBO forum, When using "DONT" and partner bids a convenient suit asking for your other suit does partner's bid have to be alerted? EX: S W N E 1N 2C P 2D Does the 2D bid have to be alerted? Jerry D.
-
BBO forum, I was West and of course partner was East. Since they were shuffled hands I can't recreate them. My partner would have had 15-17 balanced as it states on our convention card. I was very weak with a 5 card heart suit. I think we just made 2 hearts. Jerry D.
-
BBO forum, Our partnership agreement is that a 1NT overcall in the direct seat is natural(15-17) and balanced. Jerry D.
