It is pouring with rain here, so I'll treat you to some Economics. Say you want to find out the optimal price to sell Bridge Master. Step i) Make a C(q) function. e.g. C(q)=500+ 1Q, i.e. it costs 500 to set up a print run, the $1 for each extra CD. ii) Set up a Dd(p) function. e.g. Q(p)=10,000-50P. which means if the price of BM was $0, 10,000 copies would be demanded. If the price was $100, 5,000 would be demanded, $0 would lead to demand 0. The actual function would probably be nonlinear. Rephrase this as P = (10,000 - Q)/50. Revenue is just P*Q, giving Revenue = Q(10,000-Q)/50 Differentiate i) and ii) WRT Q giving iii) 1 and iv) 200- .04Q Equate iii) and iv) giving 200 - .04Q = 1 or Q = 4975. So the optimal amount to sell is 4975 units, which we see leads to a price of $100.5 Note that this ignores tax. Say you were taxed 20% of revenue. Now your revenue would be 0.8Q(10K-Q)/50, and the resulting calculations would lead to a higher price and lower quantity solution. However, real life is more dynamic. E.g. if you think sales today will effect Demand tomorrow, you have to alter some of the equations. Sorry if any of the math is wrong, I am in an internet cafe in Jerusalem and have no calculator. Have to get running, but hope this helped, Dean

This is wrong. You have to take costs into consideration. E.g. if each CD costs you $2, then you need to sell 28* as many for $3 as for $30 just to break even.

i) No - it just does not interest me, sorry. ii) I would be willing to pay a small price for such a product. However, there are some things you could do that would make such a product much more attractive, namely i) Most of the problems are declarer play based. If you could introduce a Bridge Masteresque element, this would make me MUCH more likely to buy the product ii) IMHO you should add a modest number of new deals. This would make things much more interesting. Best wishes, Dean

It would be nice to see BBO become customisable. A game called Championship Manager (Now Football manager) is fully skinable. This means that the user can modify the look of the software. They are then free to post their "skins" online. If Fruday could do this, I am sure BBO members would pretty quickly come up with 3 or 4 designs superior to the current one (Which I actually think is OK, but I have friends who don't). (One friend prefers to play on Bridge Club Live because it is more user friendly. I vehemently disagree, but he still exists). (IMHO Bridge Club Live sucks majorly, and anyone who prefers it to BBO needs their head examined).

Can't people just donate themselves?

BBO is truly international and it is certain that some members have lost their lives, or those of loved ones in the recent catastrophe. Nothing I say can make things better, but my thoughts are with you. It is very easy to look at the negatives in life, but events like this bring things into perspective. Hopefully the BBO community will help ease the pain of those touched by the Tsunami. Again, best wishes and I hope everything works out. Dean

That is a good idea, but there would be many variable fields to fill in. Not all conventional bids show something, rather they ask (Blackwood, Stayman etc.) Furthermore, some conventions get rather tricky, e.g. I think it is called "WAlsh), but in 2/1 1♣-1♦ denies a four card major, unless game forcing. Thus for a convetion to be fully explained using your system would require the use many logic operators which might be too much for the casual user.

v) The ability to cut and paste BBO chat.

If you chat with a user who has "ignore all chat" you should get a message informing you that he/she has this option checked, or preferably it should be impossible to chat with them at all.

From BBO Lobby News: "We have lots of exciting plans for BBO in 2005" What, may I ask, are these? Also, perhaps this could be a thread for wishes for 2005. I will bump it at the end of 2005 and see how it looks. Wishes: i) Dramatic overhaul of the Teams Match system ii) The ability to play bridge for $ iii) Improvement to the UI. E.g. clicking on user's name and going to their table, signing up for tourney whilst playing in MBC etc. iv) BBO to hit the 10K mark.

Hi, I think it is important that you report this. Whilst you are thick skinned, other users are not. I suspect there are many report "petty" offenders who regularly are insulting to partners, leave in the middle of a hand, type rude comments and these people are bad for BBO and make BBO unpleasant for the majority of casual users. BBO and the Yellows have the power and ability to deal with the irritants, but only users bring the problem to Admin's attention. If people reported these "minor" foibles more thoroughly, Yellows can quickly determine who was just having a bad day, and who are the scourge of BBO who must reform of be banned. Dean

I think the distribution is much clearer than you all realise. Declarer clearly had one diamond, and partner six. First clue: Partner overcalled two diamonds, but did not Weak Jump shift first up. Why would he do this? Probably because he had a four card major. Similar situation. Bidding goes: P~1♣~p~1♠~2♥ it is more likely than usual that the two Hearts bidding has 4 ♠s, which helps explain his initial pass. What 4 card major could it be? If he doesn't have 4 ♠ then declarer does, but declarer would have support his partner with a 4 bagger, so we rule that out. So partner seems to be 4w6x and declarer is 3y1z Many people require a 6 card suit to rebid a minor which would give declarer 3316. If he had a 5 cards suit then he would be 3415 in which case he might have supported Spades. So 3316 is most likely, with 3415 an outside possibility. As for the honour distribution. Partner would not overcall 2ds on just QTxxxx. Furthermore, we know that he did not bid 2d first up because of his 4 card Spade suit, well if his suit was headed by the ten he would be less inclined to worry about this, so he must have at least one spade honour. Could he have both? Unlikely. For one, he may well have led from AKxx. Furthermore, if he did have AKxx then this leaves declarer with xxx Kxx K KQ8xxx Which is a pass for most people. Give declarer AKx xxx K KQ8xxx and he likely rebids 2♠ bypassing his 6 card suit. So partner has Hxxx (H is A or K) ?xx QTxxxx Void For his 2D bid he surely must have the Heart K, completing the picture of the hand. -

Partner is 3-2-6-2 How so? This would mean declarer rebid a 4card suit. -

OK. This is open for anyone to answer. Even those who are usually found in the advanced/expert forum :) -
Fourth to speak, all non you hold [hv=d=l&v=n&s=s54hat86daj93cj96]133|100|Scoring: IMPs[/hv] The bidding goes 1♣~P~1♠~P 2♣~2♦~3♣~3♦ (Who thinks 4 is better?) P~P~4♣~All p Playing 2/4 leads your p tables the Diamond 6 and dummy tables [hv=d=l&v=n&s=s54hat86daj93cj96]133|100|Scoring: IMPs[/hv] You play the Ace and declarer drops the King. Some questions you should be able to answer i) What is partners exact distribution? ii) Who has the King of Hearts? iii) How are the Spade honours divided? Could the more expert members please refrain from answering. If you want, PM me. Have fun.

Fav vul. 987 K A97652 QT9 RHO passes, you congratulate yourself on an unusually disciplined pass, LHO opens 1C, partner surprises you by overcalling 1 Diamond and RHO Sputniks. You bid 1H (thoughts?), LHO bids 3C and the action is back to you. Whatdya think?

More general question: Given BBO's auto-update function, how can folks be running ancient versions? The only thing that makes sense is if someone were running a version so old that auto-update didn't work... Even then, I would think that they'd be locked off the site by now. Richard, it is possible that someone has not used BBO on a particular PC for a while. Dean

Does BBO keep records of the success rate of its users on various BM2000 deals. It would be interesting to see which deals are perceived as relatively hard compared to others. It would also give an indication into which deals have been mislevelled (Some level 3 problems are significantly harder than some level 4 deals IMHO).

Table Preference -> visible to friend
Deanrover replied to soldatoJ's topic in Suggestions for the Software
This is a good idea. Is there currently any way to set up an invisible table and regulate who can kibitz? -
The organisers of the event have informed me that it will not be covered on BBO for a number of reasons. The next one (in 18 months) will. Many thanks to those who volunteered. Dean

Now we have someone willing to work from 21:00 to 03:00. I am willing to work from either 12:00 to 21:00 or 03:00 to 12:00 but not both. Anyone care to help out?
