Hi Uday. This problem seems common. Have you ever thought of writing a BBO troubleshooter with a link to download the font? Dean

I think you missed out an important point Mike. 3) NO

2 singletons or a void + doubleton
Deanrover replied to Rain's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
The nice thing about having two singletons is that the enemy will see your first singleton, then think "She has one singleton, therefore another is unlikely" and consequently misplay. -
This Saturday.
-
Guys, do you think further enemy action is likely? What is your plan if LHO bids x clubs?
-
x AKxx QJx KJxxx You open 1C. P responds 1D. RHO, a Gold Star bids 4C, majors. LHO bids 4S. You double. OK, this is a horrible double. But just imagine that you misclicked, undos are not allowed and you have to accept it. LHO xxs and the action is back to you. How do you continue? Edit: You are vulnerable and they are non vul. IMPs p.s. Your decision will decide who wins the tournament. No pressure.
-
AKQxxx x AQ8xx x Your at table one of a swiss tourney. Your opps are good, and RHO is a Gold Star. Your p is an unknown, but solid and conservative Japanese player. All red, the bidding goes Pass One Club to you. You overcall 1S, LHO bids 2C, your p bids 2S and Goldstar bids 3C. What is your plan? Agree with 1S?

It is very likely that BBO will cover the Young Chelsea 24 hour marathon. It takes place in Earls Court and runs from 14:00 Saturday until 14:00 Sunday. If you are willing to volunteer please leave a message for me here or on BBO stating what times you are available to do. Thanks, Dean

The other day I saw an individual tournament with a cap set a 90 players. This is dumb as 90 players is 22.5 tables! Perhaps you should only be allowed to set a cap at an even number for pairs tourney and a multiple of 4 for indys.

Sometimes I will reject a tourney invitation. It is rude not to give an explanation, so I usually send a message like "Sorry, going to bed soon". However, sometimes the user is invisible. Or if not, it can take a long time to locate their name and chat your response. It would be nice to have the option to send them chat whilst accepting or rejecting their offer. Sometimes you accept an invitation and want to send your p a message like "Want to discuss system?" and again it would be a nice shortcut to be able to send them a message whilst simultaneuosly accepting/rejecting their invitation.

The next Generali World Individual championships is in 2 years. I think it would be interesting to see how a Bot would do. The system could be inputted beforehand. Say the winner was Jack. There would be a special room where Jack plays. It would consist of 4 PCs. The 3 humans would log into BBO and play against Jack. This would then be relayed on Vugraph. This seems better than the alternative of having 3 players at a table and a human manually inputting all the actions, gauging Jack's response, and then playing the relevant card. How do you think the Bot would do? I am impressed with Jack. In 2 years time it should be even better. I think it would get 46 per cent or so.

Those leading the Club Queen win a biscuit. The full hand: [hv=d=w&v=n&n=skqh92daq83ckt654&w=s72haqj863dj9cqj3&e=st54hkt54dt762ca7&s=saj9863h7dk54c982]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South 2♥ Pass 4♥ 4♠ Pass Pass Pass HA H2 H4 H7 DJ DQ D2 D4 I think this hand is interesting on a number of levels. Firstly is the decision by South to bid 4 Spades. Secondly, kudos to Gerardo for not raising me with what must look like a very good hand opposite my 4S overcall. I suspect that many people would get overexcited with his hand. The club Queen is the killing lead, but if West shifts to it at trick two it presents me with a guess, I must duck to bring home the contract. Giving the lead and Weak Two opening this should be no problem. however, it got me thinking. Say Wests hand is 72 AQJ863 J9 AQx And he opens 1 Heart, later finding himself on lead against 4 Spades. He leads the Heart Ace and now has the chance for a brilliancy. The Club Queen shift if probably the only one that sets the contract!

Club Jack looks obvious, what am I missing?

Backwash Squeeze
Deanrover replied to mike777's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
OK. Declarer ruffs the spade, setting up the Spade Queen. If West discards a red suit, declarer plays the same suit. If West ruffs this, declarer overruffs and Spade Queen is trick 3. If West discards, so does declarer, and Trick 13 is taken by the Club King. If West discards a trump, declarer ruffs and claims. -
Backwash Squeeze
Deanrover replied to mike777's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I once made one in Bridge Master 2000, does this count? -
Uday, I disagree. Firstly, there are multiple clubs that do this. Secondly, sometimes I actually appreciate receiving a "5 minutes until Tourney x" or "Tourney Y cancelled", but I just don't appreciate getting interrupted on a regular basis when BBO is unable to differentiate between pertinent and specific chat and unurgent quasispam like this.

Bumped because this is REALLY annoying! Please please change this. Please.

Example why I hate regular 2/1
Deanrover replied to pclayton's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Why is this so specific to 2/1 (as opposed to , say, SAYC) ? -
Unable to log in for the past 10 minutes  Could be related?

Disagree. In my experience it is not at all rare to encounter hands with 4 spades with which I prefer 1NT a response to a 1S response after partner's 1H opening. Here are 2 prototypes: xxxx x xx KQJ10xx Respond 1S and good luck getting to clubs (or any sensible contract for that matter). Respond 1NT and you can still play in clubs. xxxx Axx xxx xxx If you respond 1S will you like it if partner raises you (especially if he can do so with 3-card support)? Respond 1NT instead so you can get to 2H I am assuming that this hand is not appropriate for an initial 2H raise - that is a partnership matter. Similar considerations apply to some bad hands with 4 spades and 2 hearts. Your bidding idea still has merit (and you should not be surprised to learn that it has been around for a while), but I disagree with the notion that you can forget about a 4-4 spade fit after the bidding starts 1H-1NT. Fred Gitelman Bridge Base Inc. www.bridgebase.com I was always taugh to never bid 1N if you could show a 4 card major at the one level. Is this bad advice. In bridge "never say never", but the way this advice was given to me was NEVER rather than never. If you NEVER bid 1N surpassing a 4 cd. M how much would you be giving up? Take your xxxx x xx KQJ10xx hand If partner had a hand like AKTx Axxxx xx Ax How do you find 4 spades in 2/1 after a 1N reply? Even if the notstrongenoughtoreversebut4spadesisstillagoodcontract hand is extremely rare, what about a more common hand such as AKTx AKxxx xx xx You figure to make the same number of tricks in clubs and spades. At matchpoints, being in clubs would be a disaster. So would your decision whether to bid 1N or 1S be dependent upon form of scoring?

Some bidding decisions
Deanrover replied to Deanrover's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
On hand one I bid 3N. My thinking was that I had no ruffing value and all 2 side suits stopped. Is this terrible thinking? -
All non. 72 AQJ683 J9 QJ3 You open 2H, p raises to 4H, RHO bids 4S, all pass. The spotlight is on you.
