  1. Hi guys! I have experienced numerous all time greatest play by GIB, but this one I cannot take it anymore. The 99th time I checked, it is still a claimer at trick 1. Just knock out the ♣A. What did GIB do? It cashed out diamonds first, creating a length winner for me, then started to knock out the ♣A. 2. Hi guys I'm back. It's been a long time since I gave up personal team game against GIB. Yesterday I had some time to kill, so I tried again. I know "it would come", and I was not disappointed. An average player would woodenly pull three Aces on the table. An expert pair would, after cashing two Aces, noticing partner's lowest suit preference spot, underlead from AK, to get a spade ruff. Unfortunately, looking at dummy's stiff spade, there would be no spade ruff, so an expert would cash Aces like little old lady. Not so for GIB! After cashing two major Aces, GIB chose to continue hearts and it's gone. I know, because of the preemptive 4C, GIB played me for 5 clubs. It "knew" that clubs would not be cashing. But, It cost nothing to do so. Any human, with no brain, would try the third Ace since there is no other logic attractive option. But you are playing with GIB.
  3. Compare to defence, the opening lead of GIB is another area of random non-science. When GIB leads a spot, despite pd bid the suit or not, it could be: stiff; low-hi doubleton; low from honor doubleton; lowest from tripleton; 3rd best from xxxx; 4th best from KQJxx(yes I was the declarer of 3NT and GIB led 4th best from KQJ9x, giving me the 9th trick); anything else. Today's lead taught me a new lesson which has never appeared in my dream. However, holding AKQxxx in one suit, which is the reason GIB doubled first since it's too strong for one level overcall, GIB tried to "cut the link of dummy's suit",and eventully had to ruff with it's natural trump trick. Kaplan(or AL Roth?) once taught his pd: when God dealt you KQJ, he's asking you to lead it. GIB, honestly followed the rule, since it didn't have KQJ.
  4. To be honest, you have to give GIB some credit, for the vision of execution of triple squeeze. Clearly, when it is running diamonds, it has triple squeeze "in mind". In the 6-card ending, dummy leaves ♠A,♥Jx,♣Axx, with hand ♠QJx,♥K,♣Kx, and N cannot keep guards in 3 suits. If N gives up club length, the last club in dummy would finish a classical criss-cross major squeeze. If N gives up hearts, then ♥K drops the ♥Q, spade to ♠A and ♥J continues the black suit squeeze. If N gives up spades, ♠K is dropped and hand is good. Unfortunately, perhaps my random yarborough discards ruins its plan and somehow it changes "mind".

This is the coldest slam even that Mrs. Bridgewater, the little old lady who just play the game not to revoke, or the boss of Orttaman Foundation in "The Principle of Restricted Talent", would not blow. However, GIB simply tried to be too cute, and eventually it backfired.

I think a Flight D little old lady, looking at dummy's diamonds, would be able to count, to keep the same length in diamonds as dummy. I know it's only GIB basic. I don't even dream about any modern super advanced bot would know lackwood last train or serious kickback interest in slam bidding, but isn't counting the real basic ability of a bot?
  7. GIB probably would produce numerous bizarre decisions when it comes bidding, or defensive play. However, as a bot, is it true that bot supposed to be highly accurate and play spots off the card? After all, it is a computer and machines are supposed to be good at counting spots. It seems not so. Then I switched to a club. The contract was never in danger, until GIB carelessly "drew trump" with dummy's 9. Curtains! 10. The essential difference between bot bridge and "real bridge" is, bot does not play mind games. It means, all the cards are "honest". For example, if AKxxx vs xx,you cash an honor, and see 2 appears, then the break is 3-3 for certain. However, against human, it doesn't mean anything. In the extreme case, even playing slams, bots follow honestly, so it helps a lot when you have 9 trumps missing the Q, and have to decide whether to play finesse or drop. Also, say you decide to play strip squeeze, against human, especially experts, it all depends upon you table smell. Tough opponent will bare his K at early stage to give you a nasty guess. Against bot, there is no such thing. You can 100% safely assume that, bot will guard its K. Another example, say you have AJ1098 vs xxx, you need double finesse. Against bot, the first time you lose to K, then you can be 100% sure, the next finesse is on. Let's say you are in 3NT, dummy has AQJ10xx and you have xx in hand, with no other entry. The first finesse hold, but against human, a champion player would rountinely duck with Kx doubleton. Against bot, there is no such thing. It also helps a lot when you have to find a 2-way Q. AJxx vs K1098,just lead the J, if it doesn't cover, it doesn't have it. In bidding, GIB has serious trouble value distributional hands, and it doesn't apply pressure. For example, against human, auction such as (1H)-1S-(2H)-2S-(4H)-?? Often you have to guess, should I sac or not? Tricky opponents would bid game anyway, waiting to hammer you for phantom save. Against bot, you don't have to worry "should I compete 3S? What if I push opponents to 4H and find out unbeatable?". You can fully trust their judgement. If they don't bid 4H, they have balanced hand and enough losers. In conslusion, psychology plays a big part in real bridge game, but bot bridge doens't have it, yet.
  11. AQ10xx AKJx QJ Jx Jx xxx AK109x AKx How do you play 6NT, after ♥Q was led? The brainless human way: All you have to do, is to finesse spades, if it's off, the spades are set up. GIB played it the hard way but amusing  [hv=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=pn%7C2200%2CRobot%2CRobot%2CRobot%7Cst%7C%7Cmd%7C1S9652HQD7632CQT64%2CSAQT74HAKJ8DQJCJ2%2CSK8HT9543D85C9875%2CSJ3H762DAKT94CAK3%7Csv%7CE%7Cah%7CBoard%203%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C1S%7Can%7CMajor%20suit%20opening%20--%205%2B%20%21S%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C2D%7Can%7CForcing%20two%20over%20one%20--%2013%2B%20HCP%3B%20biddable%20%21D%3B%2014%2B%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%20to%203N%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C2H%7Can%7CNew%20suit%20--%204%2B%20%21H%3B%205%2B%20%21S%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%20to%203N%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3N%7Can%7C13-18%20HCP%3B%20biddable%20%21D%3B%2014%2B%20total%20points%3B%20likely%20stop%20in%20%21C%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C4N%7Can%7CQuantitative%20invite%20to%206NT%20--%204%2B%20%21H%3B%205%2B%20%21S%3B%2018-19%20HCP%3B%2022-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C6N%7Can%7C15-17%20HCP%3B%20biddable%20%21D%3B%20likely%20stop%20in%20%21C%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cpc%7CHQ%7Cpc%7CHA%7Cpc%7CH3%7Cpc%7CH2%7Cpc%7CC2%7Cpc%7CC8%7Cpc%7CCA%7Cpc%7CC4%7Cpc%7CD4%7Cpc%7CD2%7Cpc%7CDQ%7Cpc%7CD8%7Cpc%7CCJ%7Cpc%7CC5%7Cpc%7CCK%7Cpc%7CC6%7Cpc%7CH7%7Cpc%7CCT%7Cpc%7CHK%7Cpc%7CH5%7Cpc%7CDJ%7Cpc%7CD5%7Cpc%7CDA%7Cpc%7CD3%7Cpc%7CDK%7Cpc%7CD6%7Cpc%7CS4%7Cpc%7CH4%7Cpc%7CDT%7Cpc%7CD7%7Cpc%7CS7%7Cpc%7CC9%7Cpc%7CD9%7Cpc%7CS2%7Cpc%7CSQ%7Cpc%7CC7%7Cpc%7CH6%7Cpc%7CS5%7Cpc%7CHJ%7Cpc%7CHT%7Cpc%7CH8%7Cpc%7CH9%7Cpc%7CC3%7Cpc%7CS6%7Cpc%7CS8%7Cpc%7CS3%7Cmc%7C12%7C ]400|300|[/hv] GIB cashed out all the winners, and eventually threw N in, risking the contract(a human North would bare ♠K early) for a classical strip squeeze.
  12. No, not misunderstanding, not bugs, but truly decision. It wants to play it! 3S I decided to risk the double, and indeed GIB was disturbed. After showing "splinter spades", clearly it was serious to play 4-1 fit. It's pretty comical to play 4-1 when you have 6-2 with diamonds to the AKQJ. Needless to say, 3NT is laydown. After some auction, GIB stopped at 5S. I led a heart, and tried ♠8 when GIB finessed trump, as the high spot might create something. N played back a heart, and because of the "Cappelletti 2H“, GIB played me for 1552 with singleton ♠8, and finessed ♠6 on the way back! So my ♠7 won an unexpected trick and gave N a heart ruff to blow the 32 pointer slammish 5S for two down.
