  1. To turn the question around, what result do you think is reasonable? Given N/S are at fault for not completing the board then I would bias any doubt in the result to the non-offending side as split scores aren't available but an average isnt fair so down 2 or 3 is the only reasonable outcome and down 2 takes some effort from the defence.
  2. The answer to your question is to agree with your partner what the following bids show.... Double - Negative or just values (and how much!). 1NT - how many points does it show and does it promise a stop (if it doesnt your partner should alert...) 2♣/♦ - forcing or non-forcing and does it promise 5+cards? 2♥ - does it show values (or not) and how much support 3 or 4 cards for example? 2♠ - Forcing but what else does it show! Now I tend to play the following and its pretty effective. Double - values 8+pts and no better bid yet - I'll show more on my next bid...Partner should bid as they would if I had bid 1♥ or 1♠. 1NT 6-9pts and at least 1 stop. 2♣/♦ 5+cards and the same as if the opponent hadn't overcalled. 2♥ weak 0-5pts and 3+support 2♠ Forcing the same as 4th suit forcing - tell me more.
  3. As this is a novice/beginner forum. The "book" answer is to open 1♦ and rebid 2♣ which shows your shape and values. Its then up to partner to set the contract as guess what he knows what you have and can judge the correct contract. You bid 1NT and partner bids 3NT directly the lead is straight through whatever major values he holds... Also you are "going" against the room and so get a swingy result as well. Solid controlled bidding gets you to good contracts and develops good partnership relationships! When you develop a strong partnership you can add 1NT here if you both agree to the associated risks...
  4. I play the K♠ and if the Queen drops doubleton I play the Jack ♠. Id suit breaks 4-1 I'm down 2. If 3-2 with Q10x then I have only one loser. Assuming it doesnt I play the Clubs next discarding ♥. If the Clubs break 5-1 with the hand with a singleton ♣ holding the Q♠ down 1 any other break and the losing ♥/♦ are going on the Clubs and we have a loser on loser play on Q ♣ when which ever hand ruff withs the Q ♠. No doubt the wrong line :)
  5. Playin in the EBU Spring sim pairs (board 9) we had the following hand and bidding hv=pc=n&s=sj7h643dq6ckj9432&w=sa54hkq5dkjt985cq&n=skq93ha972d74cat7&e=st862hjt8da32c865&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=1np2np3cpp3dp3sppp]399|300|2NT announced as transfer to minors*[/hv] The 2NT bid was not alerted but as West was about to bid - North announced it as transfer to minors. 3 Clubs not alerted as relay and pass or correct. North / South are a genuinely inexperienced pair and when East queried the 2NT bid a little more was told it was both minors. I as west knew it was only Clubs but I can't say anything. East thought 3 Diamonds as a result was a cue (ie that the 2NT was both minors...) and so ended up in 3 Spades. If North didnt announce and just alert I'd just bid 3Ds anyway. How do you get out of this mess as a TD!
  6. If the facts are as stated then score stands. Declarer did not hesitate with a singleton - he'd played it and he is looking at KQ106 on the table. Taking a couple of seconds to think in any situation except where I am next to play and hold a singleton isnt unreasonable. Declarer considering whether to play the 10 even though it is a poor play isnt deceitful and would I even notice or complain about it - god no. The only option by a director is to call South a liar and a cheat on a 2 second hesitation - guess what it ain't gonna happen.
  7. [hv=pc=n&s=s8hdc2&w=shkd9c&n=sk2hdc&e=s9h6dc]399|300|Contract is 4H by East[/hv] North leads a Spade , East ruffs (revokes), South follows and Dummy plays the Diamond. Now East plays the last spade and the revoke is revealed. You can't revoke at trick 12 so East replaces the trump with the spade. Now can Declarer change dummy's card to a trump which is the only logical play? What law applies here? I was actually South here and the director ruled that Dummy couldn't change card so we benefited. However if Declarer should be allowed the trick I'll get the score adjusted to them! Regards Steve
  8. Playing at a local club last night, we had the situation where Declarer creates a very likely throw-in to make a contract. Declarer strips the other suits and intends to force RHO to either cash A♠ or give a ruff-sluff holding declarer to 2 tricks. RHO has AQ♠ sitting over Dummys Kx To beat it RHO has to duck AKx in their suit to partners queen when the suit is singleton in dummy & declarers hand - the player is highly unlikely to do so. The preceding trick to the throw-in RHO plays a club (the throw-in suit) and immediately prevents their revoke by correcting to a Heart the played suit. The club becomes a major penalty card and now RHO has to duck his AK♣and so beat the contract. What law allows an adjusted score? Steve
