  1. I was kibitzer at your table. If there is a fatal mistake or misclick players may ask for undo and always accepted even after many rounds or after 3 passes.Sometimes Host adjust it. There was no request for an undo by Mr.Garozzo. I dont know N-S sysytem or convention to deal such situation, what was the mistake mentioned about .Bidding continued without any interruption. As a result auction stayed as it was and nobody asked for an undo. My comment based on actual bidding in one room or other not for all such situations some may encounter, just a comment thats it :)
  2. I think how to handle this situation and judgement is important here. After initial opening of South ,North knows they have the majority of HCP is in their partnership and they are "the attackers".There is no need to rush ,because opps need to show their hands . After East 3♠ bid and West pass,North needs to take the action for good news.North has a near opening HCP and count 23 or more HCP for their side, plus a very good general T/O DBL opportunity . They will bid accordingly then after even if they have an aggrement or not. Noth South can not let opps play without pen.DBL after North DBL 3♠.Passes are forcing and/or they bid their game or keep bid on. Other room's N-S bidding is very instructive .There is no rush, Mr.Garozzo and Mr.Cayne wait opps resume their bidding and Mr.Garozzo takes the initiative , simple and beautiful. You may want to read this article http://www.clairebridge.com/doc_pedagogiques/camp_en_attaque.pdf .It is in French but many would understand.
  3. Control The Bidding Paul Mendelson , very good book on the subject.
  4. This kind of hands create problems in openings and if you open them from 1st at equal vul. you randomise the results.Hand has 8 or 8.5 countable hcp and 2 qt and no tens or 9's.Some may open weak 2 or Flannery if they stretch and would be better for hand definition. At last wont leave partner with a wild guess in between 8 to 21 hcp if you are not agreed in how light would be the opener from first seat and vulnerability. If you count this hand Qx as 2hcp and 2 distribution points from hearts you have 13 and an opener.Or 21 for rule of 20.A clear opener is it? If you change J and Q places i might open this hand but i am not sure with the actual one. After 1S overcal 2D is a free bid and unlimited by South and need more hcp than it has then dbl has some penalty tendency from my view. After all why not a simple 2H bid? KQ will compensate the needs even opener has 5H and limit the hand. This is what the hand has in my opinion.
  5. ""Counting Quick Tricks and Defensive Tricks How do you count both in the same hand?"" The answer of you question is yes you can count both in the same hand but you need to use "translation rules". 1)Suits with 5 or less cards Quick Tricks is equal to Defensive Tricks Ex: AQxxx 1.5 QTs = DTs 2)Suits with 6 cards Queen must be ignored in Defensive Tricks Ex: AQxxxx 1.5 QTs but 1 DT 3)For all suits with 7 through 9 cards only Ace can be counted as one Defensive Trick Ex: AKxxxxx 2 QTs but 1 DT Also when bidding starts, DTs need to be reevaluated.Say opponents bid spades contract so you can count spades QJT in your hand as 1 DT . Infact QJT is zero QT. Say your Right hand opponent opens spades and you have AJx in suit opened.QT is 1 but DTs improved to 1.5 . And again say you hold K singleton in spades,it means zero QT but if your partner opens spades now you can count K as 0.5 DTs . You also need to make some tweaks for DTs in playing IMP scoring or MP scoring. All of above information is not mine.Taken from Richard .As a bridge teacher for decades Richard L. Strickland ( Richardrls in BBO) teaches them and many many more in BBO for free. As a side note : Richard's system book to play only in IMP's " Granny's Kiss " is using solely Defensive Tricks as hand evaluation. He is teaching and playing this system with his students in BBO.
