  1. Mike you'd bid on this like a shot, and on plenty worse hands as well.
  2. It would be if you play Checkback and the auction was unopposed. Not so sure after intervention, but it looks forcing for 1 round anyway.
  3. 1. Double I think is best, since you have quite a nice hand. If partner bids some number of clubs you'll just have to put dummy down and apologise, but your suits are good, so I think you've too much just to pass. 2. Playing any system (other than strong pass when 1D is a Fert) you should bid 1H here. This is the likely auction if North bids 1H 1D P 1H P 2C P 2D P P X P 2S all pass If North passes, this is a more likely auction 1D P P 1S P 2D P 2S P 3S P 4S 3. This hand should not bid 2C. 1) Neither of your suits are good 2) You have a minimum 3) You have rubbish shape. 4. Yeah, double here is fine after passing on the first round 5. Depends on what your agreement about what the weakest action is. I play that a bid here shows a hand that is willing to compete (with pass being weaker). 6. Opposite some of the hand that will balance with 1S here, 3S is more than enough after the cue. 7. The game isn't too brilliant, needs spades 2-2 (or stiff J) and the H K onside (or club king, but this is less likely). I'd only bid 4 here as E at IMPs
  4. In one partnership we play that X = good take out (15+) and 1NT = bad take-out, so we can play mini-Lebensohl (with 4333 and a 7 count we can pass and beat them on power.
  5. Never heard of anything like this, and the reason is something like this: With 7-4-X-Y you 99.9% of the time want to play in the 7 card suit rather than the 4 card suit. And I especially think that opening in the 4 card minor with 7-4 is a dreadful treatment.
  6. The way I play it is either a) a solid suit or  a 1 loser suit and an outside ace. The idea is that it should have some play for game opposite most hands that partner may have (give him an average 7 or 8 count) However, we do play a strong club, and so we don't have as much of a problem of our 1 level openings being passed out when 10 playing tricks. We do say no outside A, K or Q other than the possible outside A if the suit is 1 loser variety. We don't usually do it on a void, although admittedly the problem hasn't come up yet.
  7. I suppose I wouldn't mind unduly paying to watch the really big events, but for most Vugraph sessions when I haven't heard of the players I wouldn't be interested. I'd imagine a lot of people would have a similar attitude.
  8. I have some sympathy with the pass over 1C rather than bidding 1D, but after the double the trumps are nowhere near good enough to pass the double. If partner is known for pre-balancing, 2D is ok, otherwise 3D. Passing the double is just wrong.
  9. Even at my local bridge club there's plenty of the so called stupid rich who play in the £5 game, and get wiped out every night. Doesn't stop them coming back though. A friend of mine plays pro bridge. Apparantly there are these very rich sponsors, who are quite happy to give him about $500 for playing in a weekend congress somewhere in the world, and pay his hotel and air fair on top of that. Guess it just shows it's not what you know......
  10. The rule is less than Rule of 18, not 10 HCP
  11. This ISN'T a strong 1C hand playing Precision, for the simple reason that the bidding is likely to go: 1C (2NT) X (5D) or something similar. Hence I open 1S quite happily. Over a 2C response I bid 3S, setting trumps. If partner doesn't bid hearts himself I'm not going to either.
  12. In Acol, this sequence is good: 1H 2C 3D (GF) 3H (PFA) 4C (cue) 4D (cue) 4H (no spade control) 4S (control) 4NT (RKCB) etc etc
  13. Jordan is an annoying talentless [edited..uday] who only manages to get anywhere in life by the size of [edited..uday]. She has no pros whatsoever. However if you meant the convention whereby: 1M (X) 2NT shows a good raise to the 3 level, it is useful because the strongish balanced hand can be shown by a redouble, hence there are no useful alternative meanings for the bid.
  14. With K of H Q of clubs I raise With K of H J of clubs I pass
  15. We can't continue the relay after this. After 2D or double, we can relay, but intervention 2 levels up and higher, relays are off.
  16. The comment regarding drury does not reduce the risks of going for -1100 Supposing partner held: x AJxxx Axxx xx and you opened in 3rd 1H on the hand that Roland posted. RHO doubled (because he would). Who in their right minds wouldn't bid 4H now? If anyone would bid drury here then this isn't drury as it is meant, it is a psyche control pure and simple. The idea behind drury is that on hands like: Axxx Kxx KJx xxx if partner has opened an 11 count, you don't get to a no-play 3H. Not for dealing with hands with 5-6 card support for partner's suit.
  17. Hi everyone You're playing a symmetric relay system and partner opens 1S (playing strong club and 5 card majors. You hold: [hv=s=sqhakqjt5daq76cj9]133|100|[/hv] 2H would be NF, so you bid 2C, your relay starter. LHO overcalls 2H (yes really), and partner bids 3C, natural unbalanced. Your bid is?
  18. I think your suit is just too ropey to bid here. Part of playing good bridge is avoiding stupid results (such as going for -1100 vs nothing) so I pass. A bid here should show either (or preferably both) a good hand or a good suit. This is neither.
  19. For me, 4NT is very rarely Blackwood. 1 is quantitative with 4S (if 2C was stayman). I have ways of showing slam tries after agreeing hearts here. 2 is quantitative with 4H 3 is just quantitative. I can bid 3D here as forcing 4 is a natural sign off. Opener must have a very bad hand for slam purposes on this auction. 4C was natural and forcing btw 5 is RKCB for hearts here. If I had a normal raise to 4NT quantitative, I could bid 4th suit and raise partner's 3NT to 4NT, or do something else if he didn't bid 3NT.
  20. Someone gave me a link to a website which gives you a rating, somehow based (I think) on your recent results. A complete farce of course, because several gold stars only have intermediate ratings. The link is www.5.waw.pl/~lukasz/bbo/
  21. Just remind me, what's the bridge world death hand?
  22. This, I believe, was in the Tollemanche; Mike Byrne showed the hand to me and asked what I'd do given the auction. I passed like a shot.
  23. In the UK, a psyche was considered a "red" psyche on the following hand in the following auction QT9xxxx Jxx Axx Void when it went (you dealer) P (P) 1H (1NT) 2S (3NT) P P and you didn't double.
  24. Hmmm. Suppose you have: KJxx Kxx Axx xxx and partner opens 1H in third seat (you didn't like opening a 4333 11 count), and the bidding procedes: 1H (x) XX (1NT) P (3NT) You might be tempted to pass this one on account of the fact that partner clearly has rubbish, but it would be an downright field.
