My hand has no shape, 2 defensive tricks and only 3 spades. Partner couldnt overcall 1♠ white at MP. I cant see how a double could be a good idea, so I just pass and try to win the board in defense.
Partner has a competitive hand with 6(5)♥s. With an invitational hand he would have bid a direct 3♥ or doubled for t/o and then bid ♥s. Now I would just compete to 3♥s
I think Rainer makes a fair point here. It is quite likely that Smirnov had made his mind what to do over 1♠X in the previous round, so he had nothing to think about when 1♠ doubled came back to him.
I agree, I play the same methods that you described. I realized that with a good 9 or 10 count I may be stuck for a bid once in a while, but I think knowing whether partner has 4 or 5 card support makes a huge difference on a lot of hands. And if sometimes you were about to miss a game, the opponents may save by competing over 1♠
I would go low and bid only 1♠ as South (2♠ shows 5 for me and cuebidding with the wasted king of hearts is clear overbid). Now North is kinda stuck and may pass or bid 2♥. Over 2♥ - South will just jump to 3NT.
No way I am passing 3rd seat fav with a 6-5 and 2 cards in the majors. 3♣ looks routine to me, but I could understand opening 2♦, even 1m is way better than pass.
