  1. South 1S - 2D ( SAYC; promises a rebid ) 2H - 3H ( 4 cards ) 4C - 5H ( asking for 6H w/ 2 of top 3 ) 6H
  2. Brilliant.... as usual .... thx Zel. I did have concerns about the "strength" issue. I was hoping for an "improvement" from you eventho it competes with your mini/maxi splinter gadget. ps: There must be a similar treatment for the 1H open..... but I'm thinking 1H - 2S! = Jacoby .... in order for Opener to show a 4 card Spade side-suit BELOW the 3H bid .
  3. I've come up with something a little different thant my post # 8 for this one : It involves Opener as the only one "giving" information after Responder's Jac2NT. It uses ahydra's 3-new suit = a "good" 4+ card suit ( rather than 4-new suit jump as in regular Jacoby ). "Good" means at least one of the top 2 honors. Next, Responder "asks" for Opener's shortness, and in some cases can show it along with a Ctrl cue in the 4th suit ( or lack of it ): - - ...................... 1S Jac2NT .............. 3D! 3H ( waiting )...... ?? ............................ 3S! = Ht shortness ............................ 3NT! = Cl shortness but NO Ht Ctrl and NO other Diam Ctrl (almost impossible) ............................ 4C! = Cl shortness And Ht Ctrl ............................ 4D! = Cl shortness and 2nd Diam Ctrl but NO Ht Ctrl .................. after: ......................... 4C! 5D! ( Voidwood) .. 6C ( 4th step = 2 + ♠Q or extra length ) 7S
  4. Overlooked but not forgotten. You see, for the past week I've been intrigued with formulating a new "Jacoby" system based on ahydra's " 3-new suit bid ( after 2NT! ) = a (good) 2nd suit ( as few a 4 cards) " ... with my added requirement of shortness elsewhere... to be revealed in the next rebid . But maybe I should limit that to a "balanced" Responder ( no shortness of his own ) .
  5. P Playing Leb, then a direct 3C or 3D would be forcing and ostensibly deny 4cards ♥ .....otherwise you would have bid Stayman ..... a slow 3NT .... showing a Sp-stop as well as 4 cards Hts . Not having a 5 card minor is inconvenient, but with this strong 4 - 4 , I would bid the Diam first..... and 4C next if pard bid 3NT . Here, however, pard bids 4D over your 3D . 4H! next is kickback ( surely pard has a Ht Ctrl at least for his bid. ) ? I think I only reach 6D .
  6. Looking at my post #8 in ahydra's recent related thread ( http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/57057-last-nights-tournament/ ) this forum : 1S - 2NT! 3H! ( "good" 2nd suit, and shortness elsewhere ) - 3S ( waiting for more info ) 4C! ( shortness ) - 4NT(RKC; the "good" 2nd suit should guarantee a Ctrl at least ) 5C (0/3) - 5NT 6S ( no K's ) - p - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I think you should still get there if you play regular Jacoby ( showing shortness, 3C! over 2NT! )
  7. I wish I had a good auction for this one, but I don't. I'm receptive to the idea that a "new suit" after 2NT! would show a "good" side suit instead of shortness as in regular Jacoby. But I would rather it also indicate "shortness somewhere else " as well: S - N 1S - 2NT! 3D! - 3S ( no ♥-Ctrl ) 4C!( ♣-shortness, implying ♥-Ctrl ) - 4NT 5C ( 0/3 ) - 7S
  8. Shouldn't Overcaller's 2NT be a bit stronger ? Afterall: -- you can't play in 3C ... since you play that's Stayman . -- you can't play in 3D ... since you play that's new suit forcing. With a DBL: -- you can play in 3C/3D ( via Leb2Nt )... if pard is weak. Regarding the ♥-suit, you will most likely play in at least game using either method with this hand.
  9. Have "all elevens" now changed to "all tens" ? Vul.... I'd be more inclined to open a weak-2S
  10. ditto. Playing those light opener's, partner can always sign-off once you have accurately shown your hand: 1H - ( 1S ) - 2S! - ( p ) 3H
  11. Bad Suit = 1 of top 3 Honors Good Suit = 2 of top 3 3NT ( reply to 2NT! ask ) = A K Q x x x Bad Hand = 8+ loser Good Hand = 7 loser
  12. I wonder if a Snap Dragon DBL by South ( after 2♦ ) would have had any merit ( as long South also held 2 cards ♥ along with 5+ ♠ ) ?? The bidding would be lower and South can always bid Spades.
  13. 1♥ and 2♠ were natural 4 card suits . ( ♥ could be 5 but further bidding says no. ). 3♦ was 4+ cards and the established suit. If you use KenRex's style of cuebidding, 3♥ and 3♠ can show any of the top 3 controls in partner's natural bid suit. ( 3♥ wouldn't show 3 cards ... 3 cards would have been shown right after 2♦ ) . The trouble is finding a ♣ Ctrl ( as most everyone has expressed concern ). If 4♦ is next bid, you may have the agreement that it is Minorwood , so I'll by-pass that and bid 4♠.... showing a 2nd Ctrl bid there and denying a ♣ Ctrl or an additional ♥ Ctrl .
  14. If you initially use a Transfer with the 5s/5h hands, then you can start with Stayman followed by Smolen with a 5s/6h hand : 1NT - 2H! 2S - 3H = 2nd 5 card suit , 5s/5h, GF 1NT - 2C 2D - 3H! ( Smolen, ostensibly 5s/4h ) 3NT ( 2s/3h ) - 4H ( 5s/6h, since can't be a 5/5 because of the Transfer alternative )
  15. At one time ( June, 2006 ) Pitbulls showed : bid trump suit = no third round control 1st step = 3rd Rnd Ctrl ( Q x x or doubleton ) 2nd step = K x x 3rd step = K x 4th step = both king and queen So, 6H reply = 1st ( non-trump ) step
  16. I was thinking the same thing ( about 5S! and 5NT! ) , but my problem is how can Responder show the ♠Q or extra length when he knows they only hold 9 cards w/o the Q ? I would think Responder would need 6 cards w/o the Q to make a positive reply .
  17. When partner opens in a minor and the other-minor is overcalled, most require a Neg-DBL to be no worse than 4-3 in the majors while others require at least 4-4 ...... One alternative, which definitely not mainstream is: DBL = guarantees 4 cards ♠ and says nothing about ♥ 2H = 4+ ♥ 2S = 5+ ♠ So here using that treatment you could bid a Neg-DBL.
  18. A) 1S - 2D ( 2/1 GF ) 3D - 3S = double fit, and ♠ is the established suit for RKC B) NO double fit 1D - 1S 3S - 4D = ♦ cuebid, denying a ♣ cue and ♠ is absolutely the trump suit . EDIT ( Addition ): C) The only Exception to ( A ) above: 1S - 2H ( 2/1 GF ) 3H - 3S = ♠ cue bid, ♥ is the established suit, ostensibly NO double-fit .
  19. I copied a thread from March 2002, which asked about the following sequence : 1C - 1S 2S - 4C = ?? SPLINTER ( for ♠ as trump ) was the answer . One way to look at it is that 3C would have been forcing; thus, 4C = a jump over a ( same suit ) forcing bid ... which is the generic definition for a splinter.
  20. You need a previously discussed Defense over Multi . One such directly over 2D is: X = 5+ in either major, opening+ values 2H! = 5+ ♣, Opening+ 2S! = 5+ ♦, opening+ etc. ( 2D! ) - X! - ( p ) - ?? Now after Responder passes, Advancer can use Lebensohl ( 2NT! to show Both Majors or neither Major , or invite in 1 Major ) or : 2M = 0 - 6 hcp "slow" 3M ( going thru Leb2NT ) = 7 - 8 direct 3M-jump = 9 - 10+ So, Advancer here should bid 3S-jump X - 3S 4C ( must be an advance cue for ♠, since 2H! immediately would have shown ♣-suit ) ..... - 4D ( cue ) 4NT - 5D ( 1 key ) 5H ( ♠-Q ask ) - 6D ( yes or extra ♠-length + ♦K ) 6H ( 2nd K-ask ) - ?? not sure if ♦Q justifies going to the grand .
  21. IMPs Everyone opened 1NT except at our table . Our opp ( North ) missed a Q and opened 1D . This led to a 6D contract ... making 13 tricks : 1D - 3S! ( splinter ) 4C - 6D Practically everyone else was in 3NT making 12 or 13 tricks . [hv=pc=n&s=sahk52dkj632cqj92&n=s964haq7daqt5ca76]133|200[/hv]
  22. Helene has brought up the immediate Transfer bids ( 4C!/4D! ) by Responder. As far as I can tell the only first Response left that might be applicable is 4NT . But what is it ? 2D - 4NT = ?? ( Quantitative ? ? )
