  1. DBL would be your weakest action ( like an immediate 2nd negative ) . But 2Q's is a positive hand ... so pass! ( = forcing ).
  2. "Steps" is one of the 2 worst conventions in Bridge . You might look into the 2H! = "bust" over a 2C open .... no A or K or 2Q's ( some use QJ suited instead of 2Q's ) .
  3. Where does 4th-suit-forcing ( artificial GF ) enter into this problem ? 1C - 1S 2D (reverse) - 2H! = the more modern Lebensohl weakness bid, initiating a sign-off. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In jogs 2nd sequence ( 1D open ), is he suggesting that Opener make a NF limiting 2C rebid with OP's 19 hcp hand ??
  4. Looking at my file notes, I found this same problem from a different Message board about 8 years ago. It was suggested for the Diam case : 1D - 1S 2D - 3D = GF with only 4 cards ♠ and concern about ♣ . Note that Responder can't have 4 cards ♥ either because with 4-4 he would have bid 1H first . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Likewise for: 1D - 1H 2D - 3D = GF with only 4 cards ♥ and concern about ♣ . If Responder also had 4 cards ♠, he would have reversed into 2S . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Club case doesn't have a rebid "space" problem : 1C - 1M 2C - 2D! ( cheapest bid new suit forcing analogous to NMF over a 1NT rebid )
  5. I don't know if it is standard but it is certainly an option . 2H! = cheapest new bid suit forcing ( replies analogous to NMF over 1NT rebid ) and may be artificial. But what if Opener has 4 cards ♥ and you don't ( as here ) ? 1D - 2S 2D - 2H! 3H - ?? now what ??
  6. Those are definitely BAD openers.... and I don't think I'd open. [EDIT: I'd probably open the 2nd one ]
  7. Too bad you & partner hadn't discussed strong 2-suited jumps over a weak-2D open .... much like "Leaping Michaels" over a weak-2H or -2S. One method after 2D : 3D = stop-ask 4D = majors 3H = ♥ / ♣ 3S = ♠ / ♣
  8. Zel..... Note that Opener's : 3C! guarantees shortness in ♠ or ♦ [ besides showing 4 ( or 5 )♣ heading by the A or K ] . After the - 3D! ( ask ) : 3S! ( 2nd step ) = ♦ shortness, "bad" hand since I could not use the 3rd, 4th or 5th steps ; thus denying a 2nd ♣-honor and denying a ♠-Ctrl. How about this improvement: 3S! - 3NT! = asks about ♦-shortness ?? .. 4C = stiff .. 4D = void .. 4H = stiff Ace EDIT: Another option over 3S! 3S! - 4C = asks if ♠ is doubleton or tripleton : ?? .. 4D = worthless tripleton ♠ .. 4H = worthless doubleton ♠ which can be important for slammish hands .
  9. Thx Zel..... I'm going to look at it more thoroughly later . I also, corrected my mistakes in my post # 17 ... [ I inadvertently put the ♥ symbol instead of the ♣ symbol for the 3NT! , 4C!, and 4D! rebids ...) Now it correctly shows the 2nd ♣ honor ( or not ) in Opener's 2nd suit [ ♣ ] .
  10. 3NT ... offering a choice of games - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I see Marlowe ( previous post ) had the same idea and posted it as I was slow typing .
  11. The GGG alternative ( gameforce over a 1H response ): 1D - 1H 2S! = GF, may be artificial ...... - 2NT! = asks clarification ?? .. 3C! ( om ) = 4s, no 3h .. 3D! = just long minor, no 4s, no 3h .. 3H! = no 4s, but have 3h .. 3S! = 4s and 3h After: 3C! - 3S ( 4s ) 4D ( cue, denying a ♣-Ctrl ) ...... - 4H ( cue, implying a ♣-Ctrl ) 4NT - 5H ( 2 - ♠ Q ) 6S
  12. I just thought of an alternative using a Meckwell sequence to show a good long Major: Since the Voidwood sequences begin with a Texas Transfer : 2NT - 4D! 4H - ?? ....... 4S = kickback-RKC .......4NT = Voidwood, excluding ♠ ....... 5C = Voidwood, excluding ♣ ....... 5D = Voidwood, excluding ♦ Meckwell came up with an alternative way of bidding 4S/4NT/5C/5D and 5H : 2NT - 3D! ( simple transfer ) 3H - ?? ....... 4S! = Quantitative The next 4 steps are "replies" as if 4S ( kickback-RKC ) had been "asked": .......4NT! = 0 or 3 ....... 5C! = 1 or 4 ....... 5D! = 2 - ♥Q ....... 5H! = 2 + ♥Q Thus, after the 5H! "reply", Opener bids 6H
  13. What is a New suit-after-transfer : 2NT - 3D! ( transfer ) 3H - 3S*/4C/4D = ?? ( ?? advance cue-bid showing 6+♥, slammish ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 3S would not be needed to show 5h/4s since a Smolen sequence would show that - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thus: 2NT - 3D! 3H - 4D ( Ctrl cue; denying both ♠ and ♣ Ctrls ) 4S! ( kickback -RKC ) - 5H ( 4th step = 2 + ♥ Q ) 6H
  14. Isn't it most likely that RHO has the ♥Q ? I'm hoping the lead is from 4 cards... then the Q will drop in two .
  15. My take on that when a direct 2S shows "extras" : South 1H - 2D! ( 2/1 GF ) 2S - 2NT! ( "asks distribution" much like in a Flannery auction ) ?? ... 3C = 4 5 3 1 ... 3D = 4 5 1 3 ... 3H = 4 6 ( shortness somewhere ) >> 3S! asks where ... 3S = 4 5 2 2 ...3NT = 4 5 2 2 honor(s) in both minors [ EDIT ] After: 3H - 3S! ?? ...3NT! = stiff ♦ ... 4C! = stiff ♣ ... 4D! = ♦ void ... 4H! = ♣ void after: 4D! - 4S! ( kickback RKC for ♥; not worried about ♦-wastage since partner with extras must have "stuff" in the black suits ) 5D ( 2 - ♥ Q ) - 6H
  16. ♥ 7 ♥ has the best chance ( in the majors ) to find partner with 5 cards . From Rule-of-11, he will know I don't have 4 of them when I lead the 7 .
  17. ditto on the 4C ... ...because 3S would agree ♠; thus, 4C = advance cue agreeing ♥ ...
  18. 1S - 1NTF 3C! ( GF, may be artificial: long ♠ or real ♣ suit ) ...... - 3D! ( next step asks ) 3S ( long ♠; whereas any other bid shows real ♣ suit ) ...... - 4C ( advance cue for ♠ ) And the rest below is resulting: 5C ( ♣- cue ; at least ♠A and K to go past 4NT; still room for Red cues ) ...... - 6C 6S
  19. Isn't 2S the cheapest forcing bid here ( not to mention descriptive ) : 1D - 1H 1NT - 2S EDIT: I should have qualified -- cheapest descriptive forcing bid if no reason to use NMF or checkback .
  20. In both cases, since opener has denied 4 cards ♠ , Responder is NOT trying to find a ♠ fit, but giving info to Opener to evaluate a NT game -- needing ♣-stop(s) . If Responder wanted to show a GF with ♦ support, he would use the NMF auction and rebid 3D ( not 2S ) to cancel any interest in ♥ . If responder had the rare 6h/5s hand, he would use the NMF auction and rebid ♠ twice.
  21. You have some well thought out posts here. I agree with you that having Flannery on your card can solve the bidding problem .... ♥ - ♠ - ♥ would show a 6-4 w/extras ... and ♥ - ♥ - ♠ should be asking for NT -- worried about a stop in the 4th suit ( unbid ) ... in this case ♣ . Here, however, the 4♣ ( going past 3NT ) seems to be some sort of advance cuebid ( as you think so ) .... but for which suit as trumps ? The only one that seems to make sense is ♦ . Will we ever see the OTHER hand ??
  22. I would bid 2S with "extras" and 2H with a minimum open ( and 2H should promise 6 cards if not playing a special system .... 2NT would show 5 cards ♥... And I consider your hand as extras ... eventho the ♦-void is a liability: South 1H - 2D! ( 2/1 GF ) 2S - 3D 3H - ?? ( Since Responder does not have 4 cds ♠, 3S! could "ask" shortness ) .... - 3S! 3NT! ( ♦-shortness; whereas 4C! = ♣-shortness ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I am curious about Responder's 4C bid .
  23. Well, the 2nd one should be forcing since Responder has Reversed ( ostensibly showing 4-4 in the majors ) . The 1st one should be forcing too ( showing 5h/4s ) .
  24. I suppose you could reverse the meanings of 3H and 3S... but BOTH say spades. I mainly wanted to point out that 3H! is NOT clubs..... 3D! is clubs ( "their" lower suit means "our" lower suit ) .
