Responder has 5+ hearts and 3 spades. Either he forgot, or you did not discuss how to set hearts as suit for this auction, so he blasted the contract. I would pass 6H, as I dont want to play 6NT with Ax in ♦ opposite possible singelton, with good support for ♥. Also I dont want to raise to 7 when we may very well be missing an ace. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

How bad was my call #3?
Yu18772 replied to Yu18772's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think its just a matter of how you define the flexibility in 3rd seat openings. With my regular partner (and whats common among experts in Israel) is that flexibility of the 3rd seat is mainly opening weaker than usual hands, given right distribution and suit and vulnerability. This flexibility extends to both 1 level and preempt openings, which may be "feather light", but not stronger or more defensive than the usual preempts. So, this is what I usually mean or keep in mind when agreeing that 3rd seat preempts are flexible - from this prospective - I would expect my partner holding between v,QJxxxx, xxxx, xxx and xx, KQxxxx, Kxx, Jxx. With these hands in mind, its very likely that your opponents have slam when you hold 2HCP, and partner 3-9, without much defense...... I do see that here many people extend the preempt in third seat to stronger and less distributional hands, which means that i should have passed. This all comes down to partnership agreements and expectations - so next time I will at least have a deeper discussion about how flexible the flexible preempts are...... Personally I think you can extend it to either stronger or weaker hands, but not both: 3-13, with or without defensive tricks, and with or without good suit imo is too wide of a range http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
Transfer responses to 1-level suit openers
Yu18772 replied to bd71's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
If you are not sure about something its always appropriate to call the director http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif There is nothing offending in it, as pointed out before players are not expected to know (or remember) ACBL rules. -
why cannot I not X and bid with a strong hand?
Yu18772 replied to fuburules3's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Because its GIB, and this is not going to be your last disappointment. On the other hand you can browse over the bid before you make it, and it will show what GIB will think you have. The robot deviates from the explanations sometimes (and it only been for the worst for me), but at least you can browse over several and choose the least of evil. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
X over 3♠, and 4NTover 4♠ if I can expect a full opening hand from partners overcall at this vul. In random partnership pass over 4♠ and dbl over 3. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

How bad was my call #3?
Yu18772 replied to Yu18772's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Thank you all for the replies. On hand 1, since we were vulnerable and my partner was bidding before the unlimited-potentially strong opening hand, I expected him to have an excellent hand with 10-11 in the form of aces/kings, and 3 spades to go down. I led the optimistic A♦, and 3♠ was made. -730 On the second hand - since partner is a preempt at favorable vulnerability, holding 2 points I was thinking that slam with EW is a very real probability, and making some noise cant be too bad, so I raised ♥. This didnt work out too badly, but still led to a small minus. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
I would just pass - XX for me is 5 or very good 4 (AKQ style). Pass denies 3 or more spades for me, and partner can figure out what would be best. I dont have a great hand, and the chances that partner has a weak hand just went up. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Hi all Playing IMP with a good partner 1. [hv=pc=n&s=s8643h752da2caq75&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=p1sp2sdp3cpp3s]133|200[/hv] a. do you think 3S is going down? b. do you double? c. what do you lead? 2.[hv=pc=n&s=st742h86d642cq632&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=pp2hd]133|200[/hv] 2♥ is preemptive, although may deviate in third seat. At favorable vulnerability please rate pass, 3♥, and 4♥ (or something else if any other bid comes to mind). Thanks! http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Partner bid a huge hand at 2♠, and I was content to play just game. Now he just showed something like -:6:4:3, and the lead is going to be through my black kings... my hand became worse during the bidding, it is far from maximum 1NT. I would still be content to play just game.http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

You are right - sorry - will edit the post accordingly :)

Just my general thoughts on the subject - I cant imagine a sequence with responders reverse (at 2 level), unless opener rebids 1NT - that would just be 4th suit, or opener rebids his minor (as Vampyr kindly pointed out :)) If it is opposite 1NT the opener is always weak, balanced (or close) and limited, and the reverse is into a major that opener had denied - 1♣-1♦-1NT-2♥/2♠ 1m-1♥-1NT-2♠ In addition most advanced+ partnerships play some variation of nmf/checkback etc... that allows to show invitational hands and 5 card suits with lower bids, so imo responders reverse is the lowest available bid, that doesn't have an obvious natural meaning and it is low enough to let opener describe the hand further without cramping the 3 level. Even without nmf type conventions, most of invitational hands have a comfortable bid on these auctions, on the other hand establishing a gf without jumping to game is pretty tricky, and its definitely beneficial to establish a gf as low as possible. Also you need a way to show a slam invitational hand, without passing game level (often 3NT). If the reverse is opposite a rebid of a minor (1m-1x-2m-2M) it is still always into a major that was denied by the opener, and the opener is again pretty limited and weak(although the range is larger than 1NT). In a way, showing a gf+ hand at low level by responder is even more problematic with this type of auctions. Again - if we examine these auctions: 1♣ -1♦ -2♣-2M 1m -1♥- 2m-2♠ the reverse is the lowest bid that has apparently no sense as "natural", and leaves enough room at 3level. If you played it as invitational+ the opener will have to jump to with better hands (accepting the invitaion), which would leave little or no room for a stronger responder which may had wanted to establish a gf suit at 3 level or inquire about distribution. I would be interested to know if people differentiate between the 2♥ and 2♠ bids on the auctions where both are possible? http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Thank you ! This discussion is very educational for me so far :)

Not at all - I am very certain that EVERY country has a national pride, just like Canadians. As I said - they dont see themselves as part of USA......In every sport a country is very proud of its own team, and this is one of the reasons I think its important to have national teams, rather than just the best at BB. Successes of that team is something that draws people to that sport. There are other major events in which bridge players are free to compete regardless of nationality, which are played by the best of the best for large monetary prizes, but this is world championship - so they should represent the world, and their actual countries, not the number of players in these countries. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

6). a) I am not sure I pass 2♠ - partner red vs white forced to 3 level opposite twice passed hand, so he must have a very very very good hand, with 4 spades and long diamonds (assuming with 5+ spades he would bid some kind of 2 suiter bid?). My Q♦ is worth gold.....so overall 3♠-10, Pass-8, 4♠-6, 3♣-3 b) If I passed 2♠, and RHO passed 3♣ - now I would guess partner is 4:3:6:0? (4:3:5:1 partner would double 1♣) - I would bid 4♠

Can I please rephrase it to "what does it mean for you and why?" http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Well - my sister and few close friends live in Canada, they see Canada as a very different country from USA :)

I would bid 1NT-2♥-2♠-5♦ (exclusion) with this type of hand, or 1NT-4♥-4♠-5♠ (if agreed that it asks for trump quality, and exclusion is not available) http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

I dont understand a few things, and all of you are better players than I am so please explain - 1. If I know that we belong in 6, and I have a balanced hand and just basically want to know if partner has a fit for my 5 card suit, why cant I bid 3m get a response that wil show wether he has a fit and bid 6S or 6NT accordingly? May be even check aces in the process? 2. What do I do with hand that are quantitative for 6 or 7 (1NT-5NT) and have 5 spades? http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif thanks

Pass. Why did I overcall 1♠ on this hand?
-
1. No particular surprises, may be Poland was worse than I thought. Since I am a big fan of the Israeli team- Italy, Netherlands, USA2 and Israel :) 2. To the best of my knowledge North America is not one country.....and I am pretty sure that most of Canada would agree. So if Europe / Asia / Middle East / Africa are sending teams from each country, why should North America be different? Would you like a Bermuda Bowl with USA 1,2,3,4,5 and Italy 1,2,3,4,5 3. Yes and no - its not a perfect system

1) 4♦ - it show 8 diamonds and thats what I have http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif 4♦ - 10, 5♦ -6, 3♦- 5, 1♦ - 0, 2♦- -10 2) 3NT (partner will know that I dont have a full stopper in hearts - if he pools it out, I will suggest 4♠ in 4-3 fit) 3NT- 10, 4♠ - 8, 4♦ - 5, 5♦ - 3 3) I would bid 1NT, because there is no rebid for that hand. If I overcalled 1♠, now I bid pass, hope partner can balance with 2s. 1NT-10, 1♠-8 4) pass (2♠ is tempting, but 8 points and 2 small hearts in red) Pass-10, 2♠ - 7, 2♥ - 3, Dbl (penalty)- 0 5) Probably small, but its a guess - and I am really bad at guessing

Hi I have a fairly simple question, that stirred some discussion at the table today. Assuming that the auction 1NT-2♥(transfer)-2♠-4NT is quantitative, and 1NT-2♥(transfer)-2♠-3m is at least game forcing What does 1NT-2♥(transfer)-2♠-5NT mean for you?
-
3H seems unilateral.....especially if ♣ are raised. I want to show spades http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

I think partner must have something in addition to AKQJ diamond to justify the jump?http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

what's your preference, forcing or no?
Yu18772 replied to the_dude's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Imo - bot are NF, actually sign off bids. Look at 1D-2NT discussion here: http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/47298-what-does-this-sequence-mean http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif
