http://tinyurl.com/8yp38bo Needless to say what I think about the bid http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

i dont mind that GIB didnt bid 4♠. I think that the explanation for 5♣ should not have "7-8421 HCP in ♠" if GIB considers 4♠ natural. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

http://tinyurl.com/dxrpfww 5♣ is explained as 7- 8421 HCP in ♥ or ♠........ http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

1♣-1♠ 2♣-2♦* 2♠-3♠(slamish)/4♦(splinter) ♣control -6♠ The pretty standard agreement on 1m-1M 2m-? auctions is to play the other minor as potentially artificial and forcing, why cant GIB implement that? (yes you will have to pass 2♣ or rebid 5 card ♠ with single 5:3:4:1 and ~6 HCP) http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Actually this is quite standard agreement imo, and I bid it plenty of times, with different partners and also saw it many times in real life. Jump responses to stayman are very impractical (and something that I havent seen in years) - it takes too much space, and often will not get you anywhere near a good contract, unless partner has a fit. After all partner will ask stayman on practically any hand with 4 card major and longer minor, and if you jump response in the other major what is 3NT now? what is 4minor? what is 4NT? - Jump response would require discussion and some special agreements to distinguish long minor, versus controls in partner's major, limits the exploration and has no merit by itself as this hand can easily be shown slower and safer (3M over any response). Consider a x, AQxx, AJxxxx, xx opposite 1NT. What do you bid over the 3♠ response by your partner? Is 4♦ showing real suit? then what about Kxxx, AQx, x, QT9xx? To be absolutely clear - I dont argue that the OP is not a good hand to do this, but as agreement, bidding over the invitation is GF (unless shown suit) seems pretty standard to me. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

1) 3♥ (doesn't matter how much we are behind -just based on ♠ position and having 4 hearts), 2) pass ..... http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Fourth seat high-level openings
Yu18772 replied to Antrax's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
For me opening 2M in the forth seat is weaker than opening 1M and rebidding 2M over some no-fit response. Typically it would be some 11-13 with 6 card suit. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
1♠, and if passed 2♦ over 2♣ from the opener. I dont like the double with 2 soft suits, and all my values in spades..... http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

How many ♠ am I playing, what was the auction and MP or IMP?

From bidding I would expect LHO to put down a strongish hand with running ♣, 4 spades only and something semi-useful in ♦. I think that whatever I lead they have 7-8 tricks from the top, unless I find entery to partner and fast. ♠ seem to offer the best chance for such entry and to be very unlikely to give away an extra trick. If I lead ♥ or ♦ it will save declarer any guess he may need to make, so I would lead a ♠. About the bidding- 1♣????-Pass??-1♥-Pass 1♠??? http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

3♥, we might very well belong in 3NT or 4♠ http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

natural for me (pass over the dbl limited responder to ~8 HCP at most) http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

I am glad you didnt :)

I would think that with ♦ AKxxx and ♠ Kxxx, NV my LHO would try to overcall / X / do something over 1♥ opening? I think he doesnt realize he gave you a sluf and ruff. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif
-
I would double 1S with x,Axxx,Qxxx,Axxx in any seat at NV, and in 2nd I would do it at any vulnerability, opposite passed hand I would be more careful. For example - vulnerable vs not I would double 1S with Kx,Axxx,Kxx,QTxx in 2nd, but not in 3rd. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Partner's Double-jump in New Suit
Yu18772 replied to TWO4BRIDGE's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Not great fan of the dbl...but if partner would open 2S would you go? . . . I wouldnt - I dont have anything more than I promised, Q♠ is wasted, give partner something like AJxxxx,xx,Qxx,xx. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
Bid when pd bid at balanced seat
Yu18772 replied to mrmarkwang's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Partner can have 2 hearts and an ok hand (with intermediate hand and 3 hearts, may be LHO hoped to buy it at 3♥ for whatever reason) or partner may have 3+ hearts and a very good hand. In both cases I think my hand is prime, and slam is not out of picture, so 4♥ for me. I totally agree with kenrexford that in context it should mean good hand with 4♠ and longer minor, but if it is not discussed I cant expect partner to get it at the table, and 4+ level is a bad spot for bidding misunderstandings - so if you are afraid that partner would expect a stronger hand, 4♠. 3♠ is really not a good bid imo. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
Sorry, didnt read carefully enough http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

You mean P-1x-Dbl auctions or 1x-Pass-2/3/4x- Dbl? The purpose of t/o is not to sell the contract too low if we can compete, and not to miss games or slams just because opponents opened. The chances for the latter two are greatly undermined by partner's pass, opposite a minimum t/o dbl. In addition - in all the auctions where RHO supported, he usually limited his hand, while LHO didnt - so the strong hand may very well be behind me - unlike 2nd seat when you sit behind the opener. For all these reasons, being opposite a passed hand makes my doubles more conservative, both on points and distribution and hard versus soft values. When we double 4♥ we should be able to witstand partners pass if he holds Qx, xxxx, Jxx, xxxx. The main additional factors are the level of contract I am forcing, wether we rate to have a higher suit (♠ versus ♥) and of course vulnerability - assuming partner is averagely broke hand (what can I assume about his length in ops suit? and give him half of the missing points) - how much we rate to go down? Is going down doubled may cost a fortune - do ops have game? Imo, vulnerability is probably the most important factor in ALL competitive auctions, especially if you compete for partscore. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Doesn't look like a great slam - am I missing the point?http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif 1♠-2♥ 2♠*-4♦ (splinter, 3 spades) 4♠-Pass/5♦ 5♠-Pass * 3♦ for me shows extra in strength, since I dont intend to play in NT in any case, I will show the 6-5 later, and need to limit my hand now. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Based on lead I am thinking E is 6 hearts and we saw 1 club. Looking at ♦ in isolate - if west is a good player T means probably 1 of 3 distributions: JT8 vs 62JT vs 862T vs J862 (Tx vs Jxx doesn't count, because it doesn't matter what you do, you will be right). From 1 and 2 W could false card the J as well as the 10 (restricted choice), so combined odds for 1 and 2 are about the same as for 3. Looking at likely E pattern - 6421 is a bit more likely than 6331, but the 4 can be ♠ as well as ♦. Overall, I think its close to even, unless you can say that west would false card J always or T always. So I think I play the K♦ or 9 depending on my feeling, and what would be easier to discuss with partner. If W is not a good player I would finesse the 9 automatically. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

In your auction North can push it forward with 4♣ rather than 4♠, which seemed very pessimistic to me http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif. Said that, I would set the suit by jump to 3♠ (like TWo4BRIDGE) - it is self sufficient and my hand is built on that suit, not 23+ HCP. Since I dont play last train, it would be something like: 2♣ - 2♦ 3♠ - 4♣ (control, reasonable hand, not dead minimum) 4♦-4♠ - denies ♥ control 5♣ - 5♥ (Q, and still cooperative with slam) 6♠ http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Partner's Double-jump in New Suit
Yu18772 replied to TWO4BRIDGE's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
That would be 2♠ for me. Preemptive raise with 6 spades and few points (something like lower range of 2S opening). http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif -
2 of whatever you agreed to show if 4:4 - major or lowest. Partner probably has 4-5 spades, and more than 14 HCP, so I expect some number of NT is coming. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif
