IMO u opening of 1 ♦ was very correct one. And with such prd ( dont mean beginner rather unknown one) 4 ♠ would have been my choice too. Opening 2Nt with 20 hcp. 4441 shape and singleton king... i mean why. U hand aint worth 20 hcp. and i can think several hand where u prd has long ♣ and u will be in trouble. Stick to u sys; 3-suiters especially strong ones tend to be pain in the...well u know where, but that is no reason IMO to bend system that much.

16hcp and opps open 1N
tolvyrj replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
They`ll learn, through tears and agony like the rest of us ;) . Reading books is good for u soul, just dont believe everything they say :D . -
Good problem where anything can be right, well not to pass  . Placing oppos high card strength aint hard question is does prd have enough entries, so that we would be able to put that information in good use. I would also bid something that forces prd to bid once again. Not in great hope to become any wiser about the situation, though that aint totally impossible either, but buy some time to think B-) . After prd 2♥ , most likely, 4 ♥ seems the safest bet.
-
Decent 14 aint possible IMO and not bad 16 either. Both of those cases prd; at least mine, bids 1 ♠ immediately. My biggest fear is that he has some big 2 suiter. Pass over 1 ♠ in this sequence shows mistrust to prds bidding; wheter it in this particular case is right or not. With doubleton ♠, maybe, but not with 3 card support.
-
I would pass, not because or despite of the Pearson count, but because i have no idea what to do over oppos 2 of a major.
-
Lets assume that u 1 no trump range is 15-17, anyway not weak and u have 5 card major in that so 5332 pattern. Do u open with 1 of major or 1Nt, and how do u proceed? Secondly how do u start with same pattern with 5 card major and 18-19 bal. aka stronger than 1 Nt opening but weaker than u 2Nt openening?
-
Ok, first what ever u dont pass. This hand is way too good for that. So u got hammered this time, so what; so did everybody else. Dont try to invent convention to a certain case, but a such that is most profitable in a long run. This is a precentage game B-) . My choice for Nt defence is DONT, its simple and effective and can be used many times when they start with 1NT.
-
So u have no way of showing bal. 18-19 count hand? What is u 1Nt opening range?
-
Setting up ♦ must be better probapility after they have lead trump. Now all u have to do is hope that u can set the ♦ and still be able to draw the trumps, cause u maybe short of them when (if) the ♦ r strong.

With a trump lead 6 ♣ wont be a walk in a park.

15-17 pts 2-3-4-4 after partner opens 1 Spade

Responders 2nd and 3rd round bids depends solely on what prd will bid after u first round response. -

Dumbing down partner
tolvyrj replied to Hanoi5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think the point here is not to play mushroom bridge aka. keep prd in the dark and to feed him/her lot of manure. U try to bid what u have and take prd with u in u common effort trying to find best contract. U may have to mastermind bidding time to time for excample when u have very strong hand and all u need to know is wheter prd have trump support or few missing key cards. But u shld not do that unless u have to. Best excample of this r those guys who after prd has open 1 of the minor by pass they 4 card major and jump into the 3Nt with balance hands. -
No i dont agree with 3 Nt, hand is too strong and so is my shape. And look what happened, prd bid 5 ♣. Now im guessing what is right; since 4 ♣ would have been forcing too IMO, 5 ♣ must promise at least six card suit and wheter or not prd hopes that i have K of ♣ slam must have some possibilities so i will bid it, 6 ♣.
-
Can u tell me what is wrong in this contract?
-
Personally i would have bid 2♣ on the first round and now i bid 2 ♠. I dont know what prd has and i dont care, if s/he bids like that my duty is to tell i have trump support.
-
Jump shift with 3 suiter aint my cup of tea, north may have a red 2 suiter and ♦ suit just bites the dust after 2 ♠. After 3 ♠ i would have bid 3 nt; my cards aint that hot and prd hasnt bid anything really positive yet. But hey thats me B-)

Can you bid the grand after preempt?
tolvyrj replied to dcohio's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Can i bid grand in this sequence, sure; double dummy. But in single dummy lets see. 4♥ after 3Nt is a good bid it asks west to bid again and usually advrtise some sort of 2 suiter or very good one suited hand. Back in the wests shoes; yippee 4 of my 10 hcp. just bites the dust, what shall i bid; 5 ♣ of course, since i cant know what my prd has. 6 ♣ is either double dummy bid or it tells about hand unsuitable for other contracts than previously mentioned; eau de cologne hand for excample 4711. Now after weat bids 5 ♣ easts bids naturally 5 ♦ as a suit, not as a cue, telling s/he has ♠ and ♦. Back to wests hand; after a long murmuring s/he decides to bid 6 ♠ and not settle to 5 ♦. Its not east who decide wheter to play grand or not its east who decide wheter to play small slam or not IMHO. -
I can easily believe that bidding went for u part; 1♣ - (1♠)-2 ♦- pass - 3NT. After all opener has 18 hcp. balanced hand with a stopper in ♠. After that responder shld bid 4♦ and depending to the methods u use end up in slam; small or grand ♦ or Nt remains to see. That the opener would bid 2♠ for her next round sounds peculiar, she has a natural and descriptive bid available, which gives her prd possibility to enter into the bidding sequence. And how can 3♦ over 2♠ mean that responder has 6 ♦ in her hand. Dont know; bidding is always easier when u c both hands.
-
Im not a 2/1 expert so i would like to know what 2♦ would have meant?
-
Double and for penalties. This is teams right, so the only guy i must outwit is the east in the other tbl. Lets hope his/hers ride has been as bumpy as mine. 4♠ may or may not make, but 4♥ aint gonna make. Prds double promises something in red vs. white and my hand is more defensive than offensive. If 4♠ makes we shld be able to collect at least 500 vs. 620, so not so bad but the actual bonus comes when 4 ♠ doesent make, then we collect 100 or 300 instead of - 100. This is the problem in another tbl too, lets hope oppos decision is the same or worse than mine. Pre-empts do make u life difficult.
-
I prefer it as an pre-empt also. 3rd seat anything goes and in 1st and 2nd seat it should have some hygiene, u prd may have difficult times after u pre-empt; prd hasnt pass and may have good hand. 4th seat u right 8 and 1/2 tricks minimum. Also i agree with u bout the out side ace, pre-empts should not have defencive values although the trend seems to be towards such pre-empts at 3rd seat at least. Do get u self talked into namyats bids; otherwise u will have very painful times when try to describe u 10 playing tricks hand to u prd and find some intelligent way to bid slams based on them. B-)
-
3 ♦ as forcing bid? Is there a possibility that its not forcing ? Why would anyone make a 3 level non forcing bid over a pre-empt? Then ♠ and ♠ again if i have to.

1C - 1D - 1H - 1S!
tolvyrj replied to TWO4BRIDGE's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Oh boy; ok in slow motions, by bidding 1♠ as 4th suit i categorically deny 5 card ♠ suit; remember jump into 2 ♠ advocates 5 carder + 6 card ♦ huh. Ok i was making a bit of a joke there; with GF values we do bid up to the line and still, by using 1♠ as FSF instead 2♠ still have time to bring 4 card ♠ suit alive. How do we act in non GF hands; ♠ comes first and it is rebid if it is longer than 4 cards. Minor in this case ♦ r canape and at least equally long as ♠. I dont know what u taught to u children but here we tend to bring our majors alive in bidding sequenses and try to find NT contracts and the destiny of minors is stand in line and wait. To use 2 ♠ as FSF in this sequence causes trouble if responder dont have any stopper in ♠ and no extra length in other suits. What does s/he bid; 3 ♠ response telling that is uncomfortably high i think. -
