It's just one example, but I had a 1444 13 count in 3rd seat and just passed it. They had a strong NT, transfer to 2S, I doubled for takeout and we reached a making 3 level partial. I've been itching to pass with the stiff spade 1444 hands and try to get more data points.

I give honest count more often than I should. It's become sort of automatic.

Just to pile on, if you pass with 8 and invite only with 9, all 16 point hands are an accept! I also just accept with 16 always anyway unless it's truly terrible.

I think it's exactly what Fluffy said: it's a matter of agreement. I also play 1S rebid as unbalanced, but I also raise with 3 if I have a worthless doubleton. If you gave me Tx of clubs or something, well now I'm eating crow. Oh well.

Alright, that becomes a different problem (hand evaluation.) I don't think this hand is any sort of magical 11 count. edit: Also, when it comes to balanced hands, I think point counting is pretty useful :)

okay I really don't agree with the whole "inviting with 8 opposite 15-17" and similarly, i don't get inviting with 11 opposite 12-14** you have somewhere from 23-25 highs, and you're going to risk playing 3S with 23-24 in order to reach a magic 25 point game, which by the way, is not guaranteed to make, and it's matchpoints! ** ok ok 13 opposite 11 often plays better than 17 opposite 8. i just wanted to illustrate a point

Thanks for the interesting problem gwnn. I have no idea since I'm terrible at math, but I am able to torture other people with the problem now as well.

2C edit: uh I thought the opening was 1S. never mind me. I'll try 3C (too wimpy?) since I'd rather let partner know that we fit clubs. It's not like introducting hearts is going to help over the spade barrage and now we've got to bid potentially a lot of clubs.
