  1. 1N was 18-19 balanced with stoppers in 2 suits bid. Isn't that "sandwich"? Apologies if description was incorrect.
  2. EW play 15-17 NT and 5 card majors. W N E S (1C) P (1H) 1N (P) 2S (P) ? 1N was natural and sandwich-like, but North alerted this. He presumably thought 1N showed the other two suits. North intends 2S as natural (in response to 1N being D and S). Over a 1N opener or 1N overcall a 2S bid from partner would be a transfer to C. What action should South take now? Should they to complete or break the 'transfer to C' in the usual manner even though it's clear partner has misunderstood?
  3. Thank you. I wasn't suggesting our opponents are cheating. As you say they are entitled (and we use this bid too :)). We like using it as it often wins the auction "battle" :), but it is extremely annoying when our opponents WJS as it makes life difficult for us. :D How dare they? I like the ideas posted, but after (1m) P (2M) 3M asking advancer to bid 3N with a stop (P) What does advancer do when they don't have a stop? Does next suit deny thus allowing partner to bid his suit at lowest level, or should all bids from advancer be natural?
  4. Excellent thank you. What is 3rd hand bids? (3N) P (4♣) where 4♣ is pass or convert. What actions can 4th hand take? Intuitively I suppose 4♦ = majors What about other bids and X?
  5. Weak jump shifts in majors after 1m opening are very in vogue, and spreading like a rash in our local clubs. Most seem to be playing them as (1m) P (2M) = 6+ M and 0-5 points Although others play 2-5 points, or sometimes a little stronger. I usually feel cheated in 4th seat. We probably have balance of points, but partner maybe weak or have balanced hand if they are silent over 1m. Obviously 4th hand can X for takeout, but are there more sophisticated methods on the market that you can share with me? Looking forward to receiving your advice.
  6. How do you defend against 3N gambling openers. Some suggested we could use our standard defence to 1N, so... 4C = both majors 4D - single suited M 4H = 5H + 4+m 4S = 5S + 4+ m That seems logical? What would X be? General take out, or a strong hand, or what? Maybe if you can take 3N off in your own hand (and they are vulnerable) you are better to pass. More difficult to score as many tricks in 4mX? Advice and all ideas very welcome.
  7. NS are playing Benjamised Acol. 2♣ is 8 playing tricks - usual relay (if no positive bid) is 2♦ 2♦ is game forcing - usual relay (if no positive bid) is 2♥ W N E S P (P) 2♦ (P) 2♦ South presumably intended to relay 2♥. He certainly is not making a game forcing bid as a passed hand. South does not notice his error. All others do notice. The director is called.... 1) What do you decide should happen, and which law(s) apply? 2) If West passes over (the second) 2♦ bid, and it is now North's turn to bid.... can he call director to point out his partner's error, or should he just bid as he would originally have intended? (His rebid would have been 2N showing 23+ balanced.)
  8. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sxhxxxdjt9xxxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] W N E S 1N* (P) 2N** (P) 3N*** (P) ? * 1N = 12-14 ** 2N = transfer to D (can be weak or strong) *** There re TWO system bids available to N: - 3C = not Hxx in D - 3D = liking D, usually Hxx 3N doesn't exist in system, so South is clear North has forgotten system, thought 2N was invitational to 3N. South has UI that N has forgotten the system as 2N was not alerted. Does the 3N bid give authorised info to South that his partner has forgotten system? What are South's options? Pass? 4D? If 4D is he fielding partner's misbid? If 4D and opps call TD.... What is TD view of 4D?
  9. [hv=d=w&v=b&n=s3hqt85dj9764ck97&s=skj8542h9dkq2cqj6]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] EW play weak NT. Auction W N E S [1N] P [P] 2C* [P]** 2H [P] 2S*** [P] ??**** * 2C = both majors. Alerted by N. ** West asked about 2C. Described as above. *** 2S - a bidding mishap, or is S showing a strong hand with better S than H. Forcing. **** Partner didn't show much reaction to description of 2C bid, but N is pretty confident at this point that South has had a bidding mishap. [she usually plays 2C = single suited major, and 2D for both majors]. What is North's responsibility? Questions 1 - May North pass 2S? 2 - If North passes is she "fielding"? 3 - What would a director rule if 2S is passed? 4 - Even if ok for North to pass is it ethical for North to bid 3H as if pard has shown a strong hand with both majors? The Consequence North (me) decided ethical to bid 3H. South bid 3S. I decided at this point it seemed reasonable to pass. Bidding error exposed and evident to all. 3S-2 for bottom score. Partner not happy. Said I should just pass 2S. I thought ethically that I shouldn't but don't really know..... Hence the post. I'd like to know what I should do next time. [No doubt there will be a next time sometime!] I'm interested to hear your answers to my questions.
