  1. People who advocate for war rarely want to be on the frontlines to see how the sausage gets made. American media presents war theater in a very clinical, performance metric-oriented manner to assist government in selling war to the masses. We rarely see faces of death or dismembered children or burning flesh or maimed bodies when reporting war. This presentation lulls us into a false sense of security about the scale and scope of death involved, the exorbitant price of victory, and the obscene amount of destruction required for a chance at victory. We find the war effort more palatable because of well crafted propaganda that ignores its ugly, morally reprehensible and dehumanizing aspect.

  2. Clearly all TDs should be carrying that guideline around with them before ruling on a claim. Actually it has no relevance whatsoever in this case, as the heading of that minute, and the White Book section, is: Law 70E: Unstated line of play in claim [WBFLC] It is assumed declarer would see cards as they would be played and to take account of what he would see Here there was a stated line of play, a heart to the ten on the second round of the suit, so the TD cannot apply that minute. By implication, with a stated line of play, declarer does not take into account what he would see, but follows the stated line willy-nilly. For what it is worth, the 19% of people who voted to allow the claim in the Bridgewinners thread you linked are also wrong for the same reason.

  3. Surely "Pass" is sufficient? Isn't the usual agreement to reserve PASS for situations where partner might bid again? :P

  4. As everyone else said 'Pass' is the only sensible option plus if you do bid the opponents may find that slam that otherwise they would miss. The 4♠ bidder's partner, who's already passed, doesn't know whether the 4♠ bid has been made on strength and/or distribution and is hardly going to five level except if you encourage him or her.

  7. PASS IF lho was not a passed hand it might be worthwhile to consider 5c (solely to try and make it tougher on the opps to get to slam) just in case partner has a fit but it is VERY risky. Since lho has already passed the odds of the opps getting to slam border on nonexistent and that means any venture on your part is almost certainly doomed to big numbers vs a max of say -480.
