Generally, a double after partner pre-empts is for penalty. Takeout doesn't make a lot of sense when opener is probably only holding one suit; in particular, he's very unlikely to hold a 4cM. If North had five hearts he can just bid 3H. ahydra2 points

Partnership wise, only if you are playing solo or going rogue. What on earth makes you think that is 2♥ bid?1 point

Wow - the venom in this post! I agree of course that double is for penalties. But I like my bridge partners to be intelligent players who think. Thinking players do sometimes make "judgements" and will occasionally pass a forcing bid or take out their partner's penalty double. But you need to be in a partnership where both partner's trust the other's judgement and will not "Shoot opener" for exercising judgement. In the case of a double of a weak two, I would expect it to be unusual if opener takes any action except pass over the double. But there have been several recent threads where good players have advocated a more random style of pre-empting. In this style, opener may not have the single-suited hand that that you are expecting, or may have even more offence vs defence potential and judge that a vulnerable game is possible. Unlikely perhaps - but I don't like dogmatic rules in partnerships.1 point

Jogs has done an admirable job of Trump impersonation by turning the thread away from the obvious problems of Russia and corruption to a debate about irrelevancy.1 point

As you say, people like to complain rather than count their blessings. Hopefully people complain to stimulate change and not for the sake of it. I complain that the EBU don't allow transfer openings (as far as I can see it is because a tiny but vocal minority of people didn't like them.) I think that the EBU made a poor decision, and not because I personally want to play transfer openings. I don't, but I do want to be exposed to them. (Ditto forcing pass, but I think this might turn off a lot of people, so I understand.) On the other hand, I never have to play in events as restrictive as ACBL's Midchart. So I would have to confess to being "happy" when I compare to what I could have had.1 point

Thank you. Was totally wondering why people are involved in an interminable discussion about Sharia law when this sh1t is going on.1 point
-
Probably so. Do you think Sharia is unique in this respect? There are nontrivial Christian sects in the USA that forbid women from wearing pants. Also, in varying cases, no birth control and no divorce. Exorcisms involving beatings are less common but do happen. Yes, safe to say I fear Christian theocracy and Sharia equally. I treasure the first amendment beyond price. I hope it survives.1 point

most people on bbo are clueless. don't attribute to malice what you can attribute to stupidity.1 point

You really think that alienating people from the USA's closest ally (UK) is good for your country? You have a very strange view of the world when you describe this as "doing something right". What exactly has Trump achieved on North Korea and Iran? China is paying lip service with respect to North Korea while the trade negotiations take place. If they can get a better deal by talking tough and doing nothing, they will laugh all the way to the bank. Trump's essentially meaningless rhetoric on Iran is meanwhile threatening to destroy the upcoming election for moderate groups, something the EU is desperately trying to avoid. I am sure it plays well to a US audience led by the nose from Breitbart but in the real world the end result is likely to be bad for the West rather than positive. The only sources I could find when googling VA scandal were right wing ones so I am guessing this is another made-up issue that someone from Trump's team has created a report on. Sure, whatever. I am sure his cronies will report what a super, wonderful job he has done at some stage down the line. The last line is a joke. Even Trump dropped that after the election. It was more "alternative facts" (ie outright lies) said in order to try and win the election. I am quite sure that the Clintons have done many things to raise money. I am equally sure that for every grey area they have used for that purpose, Donald Trump has done the same or worse 10 times over. The main difference is that Trump has actually had cases that reached court whereas the Clintons only have to deal with right wing propaganda on the subject. I am not what you could call a fan of Hillary but for a Trump supporter to describe her as a crook is irony at its finest.1 point

red spawn, there's always a period of adjustment for people who are new to the forum. they tend to have been doing well in their own pond and not have an appreciation of where they fit into the greater scheme of things. this forum has plenty of professional players and internationals on it. coming in the top 3rd of a BBO tournament for example sadly doesn't mean you're going to win the next bermuda bowl or that you're in any way close to the level of many of the posters with whom you're disagreeing so vociferously. if you adapt and can approach the forum with the right mindset you'll learn a lot.1 point

Sorry, you must have blundered into the wrong forum, N/B is that way :) Your example hand is ridiculous. a) you being cold for 4♠ is a mirage, opps are cold for 5♣ and may well bid it. b) if 4♥ is doubled for penalties, partner is quite likely to bid 4♠ c) step out of the 1950s, nobody any good is that rigid with their preempts any more Also a very good amount of the time, hearts will divide 2-1-1 round the table so if either partner has the ace or the doubleton and you'll have 8 tricks, if not you'll have 7 which is reasonable for 4♥. Would love to play against you, my preempting style would give you apoplexy.1 point

No it wasn't. He might have meant it for penalties, but that doesn't make it so. You should not have left it and he should not have doubled. He should have passed, you should have doubled, and if a 1 level penalty was really right, he could then pass.1 point
