  1. There's a line that always work (even if West is 1462) provided that we can read West's length in Diamonds (let's suppose he has 6). Note : if East has the stiff ♦Ace, West cannot be 1462 (he would have led a Diamond). The principle is [234] cash Spades, [56]Ruff one club, [7]Heart to dummy, [8]Ruff club. We now have West's complete count, and West has kept 5 red cards : 1. if he's kept 2 diamonds only (he still has 3 hearts, and was 1462), we cannot strip him out of Hearts, but we can just play [9]♦King from Hand in order to set up one diamond. 2. if he's kept 3 diamonds, we can strip him out of Hearts [9-10] ruff a Heart, and [11] play Diamond toward K10x, covering East's card. Playing this way, I think we almost always score 11 tricks.

  2. H: There is only one bridge club in Leeds. L: Yes, sad isn't it? Bridge clubs are closing down. I wonder what young people are doing these days, apparently the aren't playing bridge. H: Well I guess they are playing with their phones. L: Actually, I asked a niece of mine how she spends her free time. She said she goes to these health clubs where they drink carrot juice. S: Hahaha I wonder what they put in it! A: Or they dance salsa. L: Yes but it would be so good for them to learn to play bridge while they are still young, they will have much more pleasure of it later then. And they aren't going to drink carrot juice and dance salsa when they are 60. H: Well actually R is 64 and she dances salsa.

  3. I stumbled onto this blog that makes good points on this subject. "At the Junior reception at the recent Las Vegas NABC, several speakers reiterated the same point: the ACBL needs more young players, and they want us, the juniors, to get our friends into the game. I have a question for those who keep telling us to get our friends involved: Who do you think our friends are? Our friends are already here. We met them at the bridge table. And while there is a camaraderie among young players, most of our friends are the same as yours: other bridge players, young and old." The rest of it is here. http://www.doublesqueeze.com/2008/08/promoting-bridge-to-young-players.html

  5. Ah yes, 3♦ over 3♣. Absolutely. I wasn't thinking.

  6. Without agreements, 4C may well be the best 3rd bid you can find. With agreements, I bid 3D over 3C: if I liked hearts, I would bid 3H to set trumps, if I hated both suits I would retreat to 3NT, if I bid a new suit I am inviting partner to investigate the possibility of 6C. Whether 1N-2D,2H-3C,3D-3H is a cue in support of the agreed clubs or just showing a 6th heart, I dont know. But it does save one whole level of bidding before we have an accident involving 4NT.

  7. Keep that as a macro, or something. You could plug it into a lot of threads.

  8. It is difficult to keep a straight face when reading some of these posts. I originally assumed they were just meant as a joke but now I am not so sure. If anyone thinks it solves the alleged problem to change the method of permitting to something different with one hundred and eighteen different colours around the world, I think you are [words fail me ...] :) :D

  9. To my mind it would be foolish to give up the opportunity of playing a lot of bridge in the US to go elsewhere. I will admit that I am biased. I live in Scotland and there is a single 'decent' weekend event in our calendar. There are perhaps four decent weekend events in England over the year. I get more competitive bridge just attending the ACBL Summer Nationals every year. The ability to play against some of the world's best occurs at a number of events in Europe, but the ability to play against all of them happens three times a year in the US, not to mention all the other events that happen. It is a hassle being an alien and you may end up with two systems - one for the regionals and lesser competitions and one for the Nationals. But your bridge experience will be a lot better in the US than elsewhere. Cheers Paul

  10. Then we wonder why average players think that tournament directors operate of the elite, by the elite and for the elite, and wish that they shall perish from this earth.
